Oh man i don't know what to do, whether to go to this tournament or to adelaide.

I think entry lists will be confirmed sometime early next week, I think I read that about Adelaide somewhere recently, so assume it would be same for Chennai, hang around and leave your options open. Check stevegtennis.com or this thread, see if anyone posts it.
Be sure to let us know your decision though!

Adelaide.

They have a lot of underfed children on the street in India. It's conflicting with the richness of the tennis world. I think some Dutch players talked about this and it's not a nice feeling.

Chennai has some decent players usually, but I think the last direct accepted player is ranked quite low. I think Ladislav Svarc & Michal Tabara are players who did well here :p

Sophie said, And for 2005 ? Where is the entry list ?
Jay : your link http://www.its.uci.edu/~jaykay/tenn...ennai-0105.html doesn't work

Sophie: The website link I posted on the first page does work. I think you copied in the truncated version rather then click on it (the forum software puts dots in the middle of links to reduce the length of URLs shown, but when you click the full length URL comes in)

OK, here is my website again .. (I have kept one for every year since 1998 at the TennisIndia.Org website)

http://www.its.uci.edu/~jaykay/tenn-results/atp-chennai-0105.html

Leander Paes will be playing but he has not announced who his partner is, for next year.

In addition there will be six teams made up based on players signing in with singles ranks during the weekend before, along with two wildcard teams.

Yes, ATP has made this standard practice for all events this year. Two weeks advance for doubles entry for top doubles players. Other top doubles players are allowed to enter (you don't need to be on-site either for this) to be Alternates to this list, till as late as during the weekend before. So, these eight spots will be filled only nbased on doubles ranks. The singles ranked players always enter on site for the six spots for them, and there will be a separate ALT list for them made on the monday, from what I understand.

Jime Jones: Thanks. I have been away for two weeks and so my news updates at TennisIndia.Org is on hold for now. Just got back.

I don't think Vijay Amritraj pressurized the tournament last year to schedule a match monday itself for Prakash vs Harsh. The tournament guys had never liked Harsh, probably because he is somewhat of a quiet type minding his business and does not do "sir, sir" to anybody - so he does not have any personal equations with the people in Indian tennis. In Dec 2003, Harsh had said something to a Mumbai newspaper about how Chennai does not do enough with wildcards for Indians (there were a few instances in the past when they went out of their way to help those like Whitehouse, Phau, etc at the expense of Indians). The word of Harsh's mild criticism seemed to immediately reach Chennai though. When a wildcard got cleared up in the last minute, they gave him one on Friday night and made no attempt to even inform him. The AITA folks told him saturday morning in the US and he caught a plane within a few hours hours, arriving in Chennai at 10 am Monday after nearly a 30 hour trip with stops in Europe, Mumbai, etc, only to find that they had scheduled him for Monday evening itself!! .. As for Vijay Amritraj, there is no evidence that he knew about the schedule before sunday night when it came out. Probably it was too late for him to do anything even if he did not want his son Prakash to get an undue advantage. My only complaint was that Vijay did not speak out later against it (could have done it even in a mild tone that it was unfortunate or something) - but he being so tight with the organizers, he may have chosen not to open the issue in public. Yeah, it was certainly a "harsh" deal for Mankad.

But ultimately, one has to win, and wildcards and all go only so far. HM will go and play qualies this time. Hoep he can do something.

Many thanks for the info !
You wrote on your page : There have been three withdrawals, all below-100 players, from above, as of December 23rd. So three from the ALT list are in.

Can we know who are the 3 withdrawals ???

Well, here are the players ranked below 100 on the entry list:

Ventura, Santiago ESP 101
Popp, Alexander GER 102
Burgsmuller, Lars GER 103
Mutis, Olivier FRA 105
Gimelstob, Justin USA 107
Carraz, Gregory FRA 111
Rochus, Christophe BEL 112
Vliegen, Kristof BEL 114
Garcia, Adrian CHI 115
Tipsarevic, Janko SCG 116
Elseneer, Gilles BEL 117
Heuberger, Ivo SUI 118
Tabara, Michal CZE 119

I'm guessing that A Popp might be one if his shoulder injury isn't ready, and possibly Elseneer. Don't know enough about the others, and I don't think Justin would pull out, he wants the points.

It's weird, because we have a satellite to get Indian news, and they keep reporting that Madras is full of debris and flooded. I'm sure they've done everything possible to fix the facility, but I can't help but think that the atmosphere wouldn't be too comfortable for the players.

Thanks BG. Can you tell us more about the town itself? I understand that the coastal areas are devastated, but Zara has told us the tournament facility is okay. What about the tournament hotels and other types of infrastructure. Are you getting around okay and taking care of yourself?

bad gambler
12-29-2004, 06:40 AM
Fee, as it is, chennai's infrastructure is not the best as the roads are pretty poor and the traffic is terrible - the tsunamis could not have hit a more worse part of the world which frankly can not handle such a disaster.....

i'm staying at my aunt's so i'm fine in term of accomodation and most of the news i'm getting is that hotels are ok, though i have to admit i haven't begun to find out where all the players intend to stay....zara is that something you would know?.....what everyone over here are fearing is that the "official" death toll is grossly understated at the moment

in terms of the players, I understand the majority had planned to fly in on Friday, so watch this space. Obviously news on the tournament has taken a backseat over here so its been difficult to obtain anything with respect to it.

Fee
12-29-2004, 07:07 AM
Thanks. I know Gimelstob left Tuesday evening and JMG is due to leave on Wednesday.

I had a feeling that the death toll would be underestimated at this point simply because it would take time to get a full report of the missing and to find more bodies that were submerged or trapped in various structures. I don't know how the tournament staff and the players are going to pull this off, but if it's what they want to try then I hope it all works out as well as possible for everyone involved.

When my aunt first got married, my dad used to visit her on Marina Beach (she's a lot older than him, almost 20 years). It was his little kid place, and he was really sad about the way it looks.

My aunt and cousins were vacationing in Andaman, which is just as bad.

But, this is weird, but the news is still covering cricket matches with an air of cheer, so maybe the tournament will help the country come together.

The tournament will go on as planned. They will hold some celebrity auctions etc to raise funds for the disaster victims. The place where the event is held is not near the beach (in fact a few kilometers away), and most of the hotels are not affected I believe.

No new withdrawals since the news of the tragedy, so I assume the players have been assured that the hotels, airport, and the arena are all unaffected.

The withdrawals from earlier are - Elseneer, Morrison, Mutis, Popp. Patience, Zib, Vanek and Garcia-Lopez into the main draw.

Thanks very much, Jay.
It's a great idea to hold auctions, I think - everyone seems to be pulling together and giving generously, worldwide.

It must be a good thing that players are not withdrawing because of the recent tragedy - kind of represents a light at the end of the tunnel, in that they are not put off. I think that is gonna sound so bad, but it's hard for me to explain  .

I decided not to work at the tournament because of the recent tragedy. My mother feels it is not very safe.I am disappointed but that is my last concern at the moment.

I have been going and helping with some of the relief work in terms of helping with the cooking of food for the victims and the distribution of clothes and water as most of the drinking water has been contaminated.

BG:
Hi...where are u staying in Chennai...we should meet up at the tournament..and i dont know if you know but please DO NOT EAT SEAFOOD IN CHENNAI...this is because there is a dangerous virus called zulican being spread through the sea food because of the tsunami and the rotting corpses in contact with the sea...it is really sad that they are finding more and more dead bodies each day as the total count is at 135,000 and rising.

the players are staying at The Park hotel...this is the official hotel...it is a really nice hotel and is not near the beach side and is not close to the marina beach...i dont think there is any debris there but i havent been that side yet.
the stadium is even further away from the beach as it is about 10-15 minutes away from the hotel.the new hotel is just 3 minutes away from the old one where the players stayed last year.
The death toll is not official yet but i know that the rescue workers have been using bulldozers to lift the bodies out of the sea and with each lift they find at least 100 bodies which is just unimaginable for me-and one in three of every dead person is a child.this has just got me shocked.
so all of you can imagine how the tournament is the last thing on my mind.
Hope i have answered some of your questions.

Hi Zara :wavey:

I'm actually now in singapore (attempting to get a connecting flight home!!!) as i took a flight out of chennai last night. I was staying in Chetput with my aunt. The purpose of my visit was really to visit relatives and my ailing grandmother and I had decided to tack watching the tennis at the end of my trip. However after the disaster I was not in any mood to do so therefore decided to get out of chennai ASAP.

Yes i was aware of the seafood problem whilst i was there. It really was just a sad experience all round. Hopefully next time i go to that part of the world we can meet up.
