I think Delpo will easily reach the QFs, but his chances against Murray are quite slight. Anyway, I strongly hope for a great performance! VAMOS DELPO! :)

I really want to see how he does against Murray. He's gotten close to beating him in the past.

What is wrong with Juan he is behind Chardy 4 to 1 in the lst Set!

I dont want to venture into the GM board. I know how everyone will just be making fun of him now. He just had a bad day but its just a little setback. It happens to all the big guys, they dip in form from time to time.

He'll bounce back, he should have played a proper tourny instead of an exho.

Don't worry, I'm in GM to defend him ;)

Does anyone know what the trainer gave him twice yesterday? He wasn't injured, which is good of course, but he looked drained and out of energy from the start (maybe the heat, not sure), lacking power in his shots. I suppose the trainer gave him some energy supplements maybe. I'm not very worried about this loss, better have happened at AO than any other Slam as this is his worst shot at a Slam title (maybe along with Wimbledon), but would love to know what was going on. He played great in the first two rounds.

My full analysis of the match is here (http://www.menstennisforums.com/showpost.php?p=12881490&postcount=169) if anyone is interested. I'm sure Delpo will bounce back strong, we just need to keep supporting him :yeah:

lucyfur

Maybe he was sick? Anyway I heard it was cool, maybe that caused the court too slow down?
Btw I didn't see the match, i only saw his 1st one.

I am BEYOND pissed, HOW the living hell did he lose to Chardy i mean who loses to fucking Chardy. :o:o:help::help:

I will NOT forgive him for that lost. But i will still cheer him on.

*sighs* The life of a sports fan. :ras:

misst89
01-20-2013, 07:23 PM
I don't mind that he lost to Chardy, Chardy is a very good shot maker and has a massive serve, he's beaten Andy Roddick and Andy Murray before, but because of how poorly he played Delpo at Cincy it just surprised me.

It looked like just a pill, maybe to keep his energy up. Of course Delpo said he was fine in the presser, but I think it was one of those days where he felt slow. I mean it is comforting that he was able to push it to 5 knowing how much Chardy outplayed him. Few changes here and there, and he could have taken it.

Don't worry, I'm in GM to defend him ;)

Thank god for you there. I feel like its us against everyone else sometimes.

I also thought he looked ill right from the start of the Match, but I didn't see him taking any pills. So I have no idea what that was about maybe stomach trouble? These tennis players with all the traveling they have to do I don't know how they manage to stay as well as they do!

I'm very happy with Delpo, 14th title. Would be great if he reached at least 15 if not more before his 25th birthday, given all he had to go through injury wise it's quite remarkable to say the least.

1 Slam
5 500s
8 250s

4 on clay
6 on outdoor hard
4 on indoor hard

He also maintains the best finals win % record of any active player and 6th best of all-time: 14-5.

He played great all week, didn't drop a set despite quality opposition and only got broken twice (today only), I hope he can keep it up into the clay season. Next week, there's Marseille, where he's definitely the favorite to take the title, but I'm more intrigued about Dubai, where he'll share the field with Federer and Djokovic on one of the few not slow as moleasses hardcourts left.

I hope so. I believe he will choose either Estoril or Munich, hope he comes to Estoril, everyone loves him here and he won the title in the past two years :D

I'll be waiting for him to confirm before deciding for which sessions I'll buy tickets (if he doesn't come, will just get a ticket for the final this year).

Also to add to my post about his titles: 7 before surgery, 7 after surgery :yeah:

Yup, his comeback has been phenomenal. I have faith too, but first he needs to find a way to remain healthy for extended periods. If that happens, big things are possible of course.

As for ticket prices: http://www.estorilopen.net/Tickets/Ticket-Pricing.aspx

If a big name like Delpo doesn't show up, they will put a bunch of Portuguese mugs on center court every day, no way am I getting tickets for that. I believe Juan will choose Estoril over Munich though and get the three-peat, he seems to like it here :yeah:

Damn very good prices, but just realised Estoril is before I get the bursary I am going to use to go to a Tennis event abroad. Probs use it for Paris Masters then, because that guarantees I see Murray, Djoker and Juan, but they'll probably all tank :o

Well I won't have that much money, so need some where that is quite cheap to get to, maybe Vienna could be a better option, or even Basel as I have a feeling Djoker will play Basel this year, but no Murray for obvious reasons

Basel seems a good choice. Delpo won last year so he should enter again and I wouldn't be surprised at all if at least one of Djokovic and Murray entered, especially since Federer won't be entering apparently and the organizers should splash some money to get another big name to replace him.

Great stuff, I know Djokovic pulled out quite far in advance last year, and maybe he wants to go there this year to make it up to organizers. Problem with Murray is he pulled out in 2011, and wanted to go in 2012 to make it up to the organizes, they had arranged a special British thing for him and every thing, and he pulled out last minute. Not sure if he's in their good books lol.

Cheapest tickets for monday will be around 65 euros / 55 pounds...which is a lot.....

Basel tickets (http://www.swissindoorsbasel.ch/fileadmin/Swissindoors_Benutzer/pics/Register_Ticketing/Ticketpreise_2013.pdf) see for yourself ;)

and then there's the fact that Switzerland is an expensive country for the rest of us Europeans...

Congrats to him and all of you for the victory. It's always impressive to win a tournament without losing a set.

He was really friendly and very surprised when Roger fans asked for a picture with him but I told him that we like him as well :)

About your discussion regarding Basel:

When Roger will play there he will get the Monday match so Del Po won't start before Tuesday.

I'm curious if the tournament director will invite Murray again after he hasn't played there the last 2 years or if he is willing to give more money to Djokovic which Brennwald has denied the last year.

I guess it's pretty safe to say though that Del Po will be there and try to defend his title :)

I don't mind Nole; dealt with him briefly in 2007 before he really made the big time. He was really nice and cordial to fans. And very funny. Honestly, over the years I have mellowed. Don't really mind anyone. Like it when the players I enjoy following or watching win but don't care if they lose either. And Mae- I don't think he is the same player really. Definitely more mature on the court but the backhand is lacking becuase of whatever is going on with his wrist. I am not sure that tactic will beat Nadal today. Part of me thinks the forever sliced backhand in his last 2 matches was just so different from his usual that the guys on the other side did not know exactly what to do. And for the first time I think he handled the heat better than ever. Either way I know what I am doing this afternoon:angel:

Delpo didnt loss this really. He still won in my heart. I mean to still fight off 3 matchpoints is just amazing. I am so proud of him for giving as much as he can in this match. He played brilliantly for a set and a half til he made some silly errors. But overall i am still happy that Delpo got into a masters final. I am very proud of him so proud.:hug:

Sigh. Such a shame. So close yet

He wasn't really that close. It was a very long shot as soon as we knew Nadal was the final opponent: you didn't expect sliced or low power flat BHs to get it done vs Nadal, did you? It never felt that he was going to win even a break up in the second set, it was just a matter of Nadal finding some better length and the BH would crack.

Anyway, the most important about this tournament isn't the result, but the way he played - namely the variety he added to his game - and the mental strength/fighting spirit he showed. If he keeps this up and fully heals that left wrist, only great things can come of it. But yeah, people shouldn't really see this as a missed chance at all, more like JMDP creating a chance to win an event out of nowhere when he had really no right too, totally outsmarted the two best HC players of the moment.

But I was so shocked that Rafa won I didn't expect him to even do well on the hard court much less win the Final! I think the poster just didn't like Rafa because normally Juan's fans have too much class to do something like that!

Sorry but after winning that first set and up a break in the second I had great hopes. So yes a long shot after playing 2 days in a row and all the exhaustion that went with it. My hope is that he would tank Nadal's games but try to hold his own and win the second set. However I knew it was over the moment Nadal broke back to even it out at 3 all. Defining moment and all that.
And personally I think he deserved to win this title. This is not to distract from Nadal who stepped up and figured out what to do as the great champion and fighter that he is. I do agree that this was a defining moment for JM though.

He definitely deserved it but oh well, beating the grinding trifecta at the top of the game in back to back to back days was too tough an ask, especially while struggling with pain in his wrist. I'm sure we haven't seen the last of him, far from it.

Here's an encouraging stat for every JMDP fan: in the last 10 matches against the current top 4 - so Djokovic, Nadal, Federer and Murray - his record is 5-5 (2-4 vs Djokovic, 0-1 vs Nadal, 2-0 vs Federer, 1-0 vs Murray), not bad at all, looks a lot more like his 2009 record than his post surgery one. It's an encouraging sign with the clay season coming up soon.

WTF moment. Kamke played terrific tennis- really a joy those DTL's I consider myself a fan of Delpo but he can't play with the big boys if he loses like this.

I just saw this post from you in GM,how can you say he can't play with the big boys when just last week he beat 2 of them and played a close match in the final? Besides all the big 4 had similar loses.

Delpo confirmed it was a family health problem but it was all resolved, he also said that he has a "grade 1 wrist ligament strain" from @raulfiber a respected argentine journalist.

Grade 1 means its a minor pain which can be resolved through rest.

I got to see Delpo practise in Queens and got a chance to meet him for the second time. Delpo was as ever a complete gentleman and was very patient and gentle with me. He even came into the court, looked at me as if he recognised me and said hello. As far as the practise was concerned, he started off slow and built up to more intense games and was practising a lot of moving groundstrokes and droppers.
