:)
Here comes the new thread for Davis cup.
I thought we need it already.
As you may already know Grigor's father Dimitar Gospodinov has been appointed as a new captain of our Davis cup team, so that perhaps means we will see Grigor playing these matches quite often :)

The good news is Tihomir (Toto) Grozdanov is back in the team :D :worship:
Toto on a good day can beat some lower top 100 players, i believe! I hope he is in a good shape.
Todor Enev has retired from the team and is now assistant to the captain.

So for the upcoming matches in February we will have Toto Grozdanov, Alexander Lazov, Dimitar Kuzmanov and of course Grigor Dimitrov in the team.

Good luck :)

The Bulgarian National Television always has a live coverage of the Davis cup matches, so probably there will be a stream somewhere on internet and you'll be able to watch it as well, even though the commentators will speak in Bulgarian (which might be a good thing as they always say a lot of stupid things :D).

I would rather hear a tennis commentator talk nonsense in Bulgarian than hear it in English. ;)

Especially the way the Aussie commentators pronounce foreign names (i.e. everything non Anglo-Saxon...)!!!! It makes us scream in desperation. Often you have NO idea whom they are talking about, until you see the name written... and then it is very hard not to swear. Even VERY good manners can't prevent it sometimes.:smash::smash::smash:

Good news for the Bulgarian team and bad news for the fans - Jarkko Nieminen won't play in the tie with Bulgaria, so we won't see a match between him and Grigor. Here're the teams:

Bulgaria:
# Grigor Dimitrov - №41
# Alexander Lazov - №505
# Dimitar Kuzmanov - №542
# Tihomir Grozdanov - №701

Finland:
# Harri Heliovaara - №568
# Micke Kontinen - №952
# Juho Paukku - №1068
# Henri Kontinen - №1683

I like the comment in there that his coach encouraged him to play more doubles. All the great players played doubles early in their career and it's a very good way of improving your game, especially ROS and volleying.

that is a smart move - to put Grigor and Miko for doubles.
I assume even if we lose today the doubles, still tmr can score 2 wins with Grigor and Toto.
Lazov, although the highest ranked after Grigor is actually the weakest of the 3 others. His game is more suitable for clay, his serve is very soft and attack-able, besides that was his debut for Davis Cup and he was additionally nervous on top of his unstable emotionality. Anyway Miko is more stable both with his shots and mentality, but he isn't fit enough to play best of 5 IMO. Toto will be the perfect choice for the last rubber if it is a live one - he is experienced, stable and his game more suitable for indoor hard. I am hopeful for this tie. Fingers crossed we take the W today :)

Disappointing loss especially as the next round would have been a very winnable tie. One man can't carry a whole team though so the Bulgarian Federation need to think about investing more in their players and at the very least, developing a good doubles player who can help Grigor win the third rubber. There's no point partnering Grigor with someone who can't even serve & volley behind a 1st serve on an indoor court. That's the kind of thing you only see in WTA tennis.

Yeah, Grozdanov won one of the key matches for us in this tie and I think we can score the final win today after the doubles match :) We deserve to stay in the second group and next year I think we will have a good team with Dimitrov, Grozdanov, Kuzmanov/Lazov and Dimitar Kutrovsky who will be back on court next month and hopefully he will quickly get back to his level before the doping ban :)

eh, that is a good question, why he wasn't in the last tie...I wanted to know that too :(
IMO Toto is a really good player and could have been higher ranked, but he simply doesn't play so many tournaments per year, only some futures around in the area, close to Bulgaria, some club championships and even some beach tennis :D On a good day he can score a win vs some top 200 players, his shots are flat and strong, decent serve and good movement, but I like him most because he holds his temper very well, very calm, experienced player who is able to sustain his level during the whole match and keep with the tactics and number of errors low without necessarily being flashy. If I have to compare him with the rest, he is better than Kuzmanov and Lazov and maybe even than Kutrovski, though the last one is a very unusual player and hard to compare them. Toto is also not a clay court player as are Lazov and Kuzmanov and his game translates well in hard courts too. :)

Grozdanov is the 2nd ranked Bulgarian after Grigor now and he will probably play instead of Lazov in the fifth rubber if we manage to get to 2-2. They probably put Lazov vs. Nieminen, so Grozdanov can be fresh for the important doubles match as nobody has real chances against Jarkko if he is playing well. Greece 0-2 Bulgaria

Grigor Dimitrov def. Marcos Kalovelonis 6-3 6-3 6-0
Dimitar Kutrovsky def. Theodoros Angelinos 6-4 6-3 1-6 6-3

The second match was good only in the first two sets. After that Kutrovsky just disappeared - don't know if it was some physical problem or he just got tired. The Greek won the third set 6-1 and had a 3-0 lead in the fourth, but in the third game of that set he injured himself (or just started cramping) in the left foot and he was barely moving for the rest of the match.
