Grigor Dimitrov/Kei Nishikori def. Denis Istomin/Mikhail Elgin 7-6(5) 4-6 [10-7].

Next up: the winners of the match between Rochus/Stepanek - Harrison/Baker :)

I saw that Hypnotize posted the result in the "Grigor schedule - 2013" thread, but we should comment his matches in here or in the "Grigor in Australia" thread :)

Thanks kr1s71an, I was too lazy to start a new thread although in my defense, I got up early to watch his doubles match.

It was a bit of a scrappy match but Grigor played well for the most part and hit some very nice volleys. The ROS still needs some work but his serve was good and he was always looking to come into the net. They only dropped serve at the end of the 2nd set because Kei's serve was quite weak and he stayed on the baseline behind his 2nd serve which gave his opponents too many opportunities to attack it.

Dimitrov-Baker is fourth match on Court 2, so there won't be any livestream :( I think it will start around 7-8 a.m. CET :) Go Grisho!

Let's hope he wins as I suspect a match between Grigor and Raonic will be televised. Baker will be tricky but I would expect Grigor to win this match. His doubles match yesterday was a good opportunity to clear out the cobwebs from the off-season.

Grigor won 6-3 7-6(8)!!!

The second set tibreak was crazy! Grigor got the minibreak for 3-2 and lost it immediately. Then Baker had a minibreak advantage and two set points at 4-6. Grigor saved them, at 6-6 he lost his serve again and saved another one. At 7-8 he saved Baker's forth set point, then the american double faulted and Grigor managed to win with his first match point :)

Good win to start the season and despite the drama of the tie-break, at least he toughed it out and won it. I'm looking forward to the match against Raonic. If Grigor has improved his mental strength, he should win it.

well i don't know anything about his game usually but I was definitely impressed. gorgeous single handed backhand and he kept super cool under pressure in the tiebreak. even when baker had set points on his serve it didnt phase him. and he behaved nicely - no fighting with the umpires or line judges or anything. and after the match he picked up a small girl for a photo with her (it was kids day) so overall i really like him!!

hi folks - just home from day 5 and again was VERY impressed.

i see people everywhere comparing him to federer but for me i was thinking it was like sampras. he looked cool calm and collected the entire match, even when raonic was consistently firing down ace after ace. it was like he was just going for a leisurely stroll in the park. something i thought was really great was when Raonic fired down an unreturnable serve which the linesman called a fault, he immediately moved over to the other side claiming 'no that was in'. what great sportsmanship. at 4-4 in the second set he just went up a whole new level to take it 6-4.

the doubles was equally as impressive with him very much taking the lead despite nishikori being higher ranked. even when nishikori was angry with a line call he didnt agree with, grigor just grabbed him and told him to shrug it off, which he did and then hit a clean winner on the next point.

ill post a few pictures a bit later on :)

He's quite a hot head in his younger years. Breaking racquets, giving up when things weren't right, giving the bird to the umpire oh and shoving the umpire as well :o (I hope you're still a fan at this point :p but I think we'd better come clean). All bad things young teen boys are doing.

He's calmer and his performance is getting better. Thanks to the swedish team of course. They're taking him in the right direction :worship:
If you're going to his match again, find a chance to thank the coach and the team for us.

ugh oh...I am not sure how to respond  remembering all the many many many times :stupid: Grigor has made me out of my skin by losing matches he should have won with some ridiculous shots, bad behavior or mental walkabouts :o. Hey guys!

Hope you all had a great start to the year!As good as Grigor's great start to this match, up an early break in the 1st set! =]

I was looking at his ranking breakdown this week, and his points are spread out over the year nicely so he can just build and build on his ranking. Better to be like that than have alot of points to defend from one or two tournaments. Great news as it looks like he means serious business this year!

Been some great clutch serving from him, getting himself out of a few break points easily. Really bad game from Melzer then, giving Grigor a break in the 2nd set now.

Which Grisho backed up with a love-hold. I don't think Melzer even touched a ball that game!

ok, make that 17 consecutive points to finish! 2x love-holds, 2x love breaks plus winning the previous game! High quality serving and self control in both sets from our man. 6-3 6-2!

Great stuff!

Oh oh (http://www.brisbaneinternational.com.au/2013/01/dimitrov-slays-another-seed-to-make-last-four), hope he has some rest and feel better tomorrow.

Despite admitting he didn’t feel 100 per cent on court, the 21-year-old Dimitrov played with experience beyond his years to topple Melzer in less than an hour.

That explains 1st serve in Set1.

WOW WOW WOW. Best match I've ever witnessed live in 12 years of travelling to tennis tournaments. Absolutely amazing!!

I did manage to get a quick "congratulations" in to Mikael Tillstrom after the match but he was busy on his phone. Mikael's wife, Sofia was really lovely to meet and we had a great chat. once I told her how expensive centre court tickets are for the semis she offered to see if she could get me a ticket (which she now has done!!). So i can go to the semi and cheer him on too!! Will post a few pics again too :)

That's too late. The seedings for the AO are determined from this Monday's rankings. If he wins the title in Brisbane, which will be really tough to do, he will have 1108 points. With Nadal and Fish missing AO, he will need to get to the 34-th place, where now is Granollers with 1110 point (2 more :x). So I don't think he can be seeded in Melbourne, because he has to win the title here and then someone else from Top 30 to withdraw :) But in the first half of 2013 he don't have to defend many points, so I can easily see him seeded at Roland Garros and Wimbledon ;)

Whatever happens, he should go into the AO with a lot of confidence and on this form, I would pick him to beat many of the players ranked above him. He's also created a bit of a buzz this week so there's a good chance he might get to play on one of the televised courts.

Well, according to tennis-live.eu granollers is number 34 but only has 1100 points. Stepanek (number 33) has 1110 points. So winning the title would be enough to be seeded. But if Davydenko wins doha, Even that won't help. ;)

For him to be seeded at AO, first he has to win the title and hope that today Gasquet will beat Davydenko in Doha's final, because if Davydenko wins - he will be ahead of him and even if Grigor wins tomorrow - he will be #35 and will need another withdraw except Nadal and Fish :)

I can not fucking believe it. Finally his first ATP-Tour final!!! Great accompishment!!! I guess it will be a straight set loss as Murray is just too good and expirienced but anyway it is a great sign. He should skip Sydney to be in perfect shape for the AO.

Hope he can finally live up to the expectations that came from his raw talent. It is just the start of 2013 I know but top 20 this year would be in a way unbelieveable but absolutely possible I think.

Hope he gives Murray a good hustle tomorrow.

Hi All!! So where to start?? I had an amazing weekend yesterday and today. The match yesterday was absolutely amazing to be a part of. By the time the 3rd set tiebreak started I was an absolute wreck! I was so anxious! everyone around me kept saying "its gonna be ok, hes gonna pull it out" trying to calm me down lol. really fun part of the day for me was that after Kei pulled out they played a fun exhibition set for us spectators to get to see something else. Mikael came out with todd woodbridge against Melo/Robredo. I got such a kick out of watching Mikael play and he kept smiling at waving at me whenever i cheered for him. it was so cool!!!
then today he had arranged TWO sets of tickets for me (and my mum) - one in the players box with him for grigors match and another in the 2nd row of the normal seats for the doubles final. SO LOVELY of him to organise both!
After the doubles final we headed over to the box. when Mikael got there he came over and shook our hands and we said thank you again. tried not to bother him or cheer much at all during the match (which was extremely hard) but you're not supposed to do those things in the box so we thought we better not. we did have to ask someone else in the box to SHUT THE HELL UP though because he was sitting in GRIGOR'S box and cheering for MURRAY. every time grigor made a mistake he shouted "YES!!!" and was calling out inappropriate things. we asked him to stop and said this is grigor's box - turned out he was the tournament doctor and that made him think he had a right to do whatever he wanted. he did behave a bit better after that though.

after the match mikael was really disappointed. he said he thought Grigor would have won the first set and it was such a shame he couldnt pull it off. then his wife, Sofia (the lady who I spoke to after the Melzer match) and their two daughters (cutest little girls ever!) came down to the box to comfort him. Grigor gave them a lovely smile and wink. After the presentation Mikael got out of there pretty quick - i think he wanted to go comfort Grigor. Sofia hung back and spoke to me for a few minutes and thanked me for my support. (seriously, i was the one wanting to thank her and she comes and thanks me - swedes are so nice!!!). she said they were off to sydney probably tonight and her and the girls are going back to sweden next sunday before the AO. she said they were happy with the sydney draw (so no sign of considering withdrawing). then she said that she had already left yesterday when mikael decided to play the doubles and her and the girls were really disappointed they didnt get to see him play. i said i took lots of photos and she asked if i could email them to her.

ok thats all i can think of for now but will post again if i think of something else!! will do some photos later too :)

It sounds like you've had an amazing week. Did you ever get a chance to meet Grigor and speak to him? I was looking for you in the player's box but I didn't see anyone in a purple floral dress I'm afraid. I did see Mikael's two little girls and they were cute with their Grisha headbands.

The result was disappointing, especially as Grigor's game broke down when serving for the 1st set and in the tie-break but that shows he still has work to do on his mental strength and it is understandable as this was his first final. For the most part though, his game matched up well against Murray's and if he had served as well as he had done earlier in the week, it could have been a different story.

His ground game was excellent and that should give him confidence going into the AO. His backhand has really improved and as recently as Basel and Paris last years, opponents were winning points by attacking it but they won't be able to do that anymore. Grigor's backhand slice drove Murray crazy and his backhand down the line was incredible throughout the match.

I'm a little surprised he is still playing Sydney but I'm sure they know best. Here's hoping he has another good week :yeah:

then today he had arranged TWO sets of tickets for me (and my mum) - one in the players box with him for grigors match and another in the 2nd row of the normal seats for the doubles final.

Thank you SO much. Your detailed reports are much appreciated. I guess he's playing on Tuesday, next, I haven't checked the schedule for tomorrow. I hope he plays later in the afternoon, I can't very well skip work for his match and then be caught on camera...:banghead:

There is no-one in that section of the draw that he can't beat if he has fully recovered from this week.

hold the horses, any of these player is capable of beating Grogor, maybe Millman and Ebden are not so well-known but Millman showed some good tennis this week and Ebden is promising, the others are seasoned players, one or 2 mathches will be good

Ebden's been coached by Peter MacNamara and we know how well he knows Grigor's weaknesses...
I don't think this tournament will be significant for Grigor. IMO he will play max 2 matches and then off to Melbourne :)

The point is I don't suppose Ebden can make it to the second round,he has a tough opponent in the 1st round. Lets see, it's abt to begin:)

Wonderful experience you had there. Thanks for sharing. Do you plan to go to Sydney & Melbourne to support our boy? Did you have a chance for a pic with Grigor / Team?

I cant go to Sydney as I had to go back to work this week but I am off to Melbourne this weekend for 1 week so hopefully will get to see and support him again there :)

He is dumping ball after ball into the net, doing everything to not win at the moment.

If he's tired maybe playing this tournament isn't the best idea.

I think people need to calm down. He had a bad match and these things happen, especially at this stage of his career. Playing Sydney was always a bad idea and he would have been better going to Melbourne on a high from Brisbane. The best thing he can do is put today behind him and prepare for the AO. Life goes on.

100% tank job and Grigor didn't even bother to hide that!
At some point in second set he went to the chair before Fabio's serve land in his field. Ball was called out but Grigor still sat and umpire agree :o. It was that bad!

I've even recorded the first 30 minutes of this 'match' if you are interested to see until I gave up on recording this shit.

But don't worry  You don't have to feel bad because the old Gri shown up today!:o

bah bah! this is disrespectful for the sport!!!

Hold your horses, people! First of all, he was not going to even come to Sydney, but they didn't manage to withdraw within the deadline, like the rest of the people who played a final last week. So he just had to play a match here.

Second of all, it was WAAAAAAY too hot here. Officially it was 42 degrees in the shade, the official measured temperature on the court was 52.8 degrees. People were refusing to come even to watch, to say nothing of playing! Many of the tennis players complained that the matches should have been suspended for a few hours due to the extreme heat. I have no idea what the organisers were thinking and why they didn't start the day at 10 a.m., instead of 11 a.m. when it was already 37-38 degrees. Then they should have give everyone a rest until probably 5 p.m.

Grigor played in the worst weather, in the worst possible court. It is all concrete and heats like hell. The commentators today were saying on TV that whoever wins the first set wins the match, because there is no coming back from it and the opponent just tries to get out of the sun as quickly as possible. Can anyone blame them?

I am sure you didn't want Grigor to chase balls for nothing and then get a sun stroke??? He is better off going to Melbourne and acclimatising there, which is exactly what they would be doing. Trust in him and his team that they know what is best.

By the way, he is in good spirits for the AO, he was just too heated today.
Greetings to all!

I watched the match and I was there on the ground with him. He did the right thing after losing the first set. There was never a chance of getting back in the match, not in these conditions. All of us who were there agreed and we know how it felt. So what was he going to do? Push himself to the brink, collapse perhaps? So that he can play one more match her and then go to Melbourne? I, personally, do not see the point.

We didn't feel bad at all, we understood and wished him luck and success in Melbourne. A couple of people will follow him there and his new fans (after they discovered him through the Brisbane tournament), also said that they'll keep supporting him during the Australian Open. NO ONE at the stands felt bad or cheated, we know how horrendous the conditions were. Blame the organisers for making everyone play, if you want to blame someone.
