I don't think it'll be as bad once she's born though, at least hopefully not. She'll probably wake up for feedings but go right back to sleep after she's fed so you'll be able to go right back to sleep as well... and Dan can get up for that if you're not breastfeeding ;)

Arthurs backs Scud for cup
From correspondents in New York
September 1, 2004

WAYNE ARTHURS still harbours hopes of playing Davis Cup singles for Australia, but today conceded Mark Philippoussis remained a certainty to fill the No.2 role behind Lleyton Hewitt in next month's playoff against Morocco.

Arthurs dismissed speculation from Australia that Philippoussis' singles position may be under threat, saying as long as the dual grand slam finalist was available he would be an automatic singles selection.

"I think if Mark's in the team, I'm playing doubles," Arthurs said after exiting the US Open with a bitter 6-4 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 6-3 first-round loss to Frenchman Arnaud Clement.

"If Mark's not in the team, then I'm the second pick.

"It's just the way it is with Australian tennis at the moment. We've only got four guys close to the top hundred, three guys in the top hundred and one, Todd Reid, just outside the top hundred.

"If Mark is in the squad, he's playing singles. I'm the next pick. It's pretty clear-cut.

"Of course I still have ambition but, when Mark's on the team and Lleyton's fit, I'm the third person."

Australia play Morocco on grass in Perth and must win the tie to avoid relegation from the World Group.

Arthurs was angry American umpire Norm Chryst overruled "a very tight line call" against him early in the third set in his clash with Clement after the Australian had won just the second set to level the match.

"It was the first time he's spoken up all match. It's pretty frustrating," Arthurs said.

"Not saying anything against this guy, but he has done that three or four times in matches against me before.

"He just seems to want to be part of the game. At some stage, he just seems to pipe up and that sort of thing happens."

Hewitt and Andre Agassi are other players to have complained about the American umpire, but Arthurs said the players just had to cop it sweet.

"He's an accredited umpire. They seem to respect him in the establishment. We can only put our bit in into whoever, see what they do about it," he said.

At 33, Arthurs conceded he was having a "mental battle" trying to stay on the circuit for much longer.

"It's not easy picking yourself up after losing every week," the veteran left-hander said.

"I'm not a guy who wins lots of tournaments. I've never actually won a singles tournament ... it's not easy mentally.

"You just have to look at the positive sides of things. I'm still playing Davis Cup. I played the Olympics this year, still playing main draw of grand slams at 33.

"I have to look at the positive sides and not take the negatives too badly."

Hewitt wins, Philippoussis out at U.S. OpenBy HAL BOCK, AP Sports Writer
September 1, 2004

AP - Sep 1, 2:50 pm EDT
More PhotosNEW YORK (AP) -- Former champion Lleyton Hewitt began his U.S. Open on Wednesday with an efficient 6-1, 7-5, 6-4 victory over Wayne Ferreira in the 57th and final Grand Slam tournament for the veteran South African.

Hewitt prevailed comfortably and when it was over, Ferreira, like Todd Martin two days ago, announced his retirement at center court. ``I've been doing this a long time,'' he said. ``It's difficult to get up and train as hard as I'd like to. It's time for me to move on and do something else.'' Ferreira made 43 unforced errors and never had a break-point opportunity against Hewitt, the 2001 champion who is seeded No. 4. Hewitt arrived at the Open coming off two straight championships and has won four events this year.

Well done, Lleyton! I listened to the radio broadcast, and it sounded as if he played very well. Hope that USA Network showed a lot of it. BTW, who is Kim sitting with in that netcam shot? I don't recognize anybody.

Fitzy was sitting on the right, with the hat.
The other one was Lleyton's physio I think, at least the one who gave Kim the massages in RG.

Can you please tell me more about that interview, please?? *puppy eyes*

I'm going from memory only so i'll tell you as much as I remember :o

First off Lleyton was wearing a red t-shirt and black shorts..black baseball cap backwards of course ;) and black flip flops or thongs or whatever you guys call them :p

Interview guy asked about some people going into the USO playing a lot and some chosing to go in with less play and stay fresh. LL said he wasn't originally planing on going to Long island (I think?) as he has never played the week before the USO but after his win the week before Long Island he felt he still had a lot of energy and wanted to keep the roll he was on going.

Interview guy asked about the match. LL said it was kind of an awkward match..he played Goran this year at Wimbly when it was his last Slam and then now at the USO he's playing Wayne and it's his last match..so it was weird, but he put it out of his mind and concentrated on the game. Also said Wayne was a good mate of his :p

Interview guy asked how he would feel if he never had to do an interview ever again. LL said he didn't mind doing interview with him :p and that there were obviously positives and negatives involved. He understands it well being thrown into the spotlight at a young age and it's an athlete's responsibility.

There was some other stuff I can't exactly remember and then the question about the coolest thing he's done..LL is turning into a goober! :p

Prosecutor to Drop **** Charge Against Kobe Bryant
Wed Sep 1, 2004 06:09 PM ET

By Judith Crosson

DENVER (Reuters) - Prosecutors in the Kobe Bryant **** case will ask a judge on Wednesday to drop the **** charge against the basketball player, a source close to the case said.

The dismissal would be "with prejudice," meaning prosecutors could not resurrect the case in the future, legal observers said.

The case was based on a claim by a then 19-year-old woman that the Los Angeles Lakers star ***** her last year in his hotel room in a Vail-area resort. He maintained the two had consensual sex and that his only wrongdoing was adultery.

The 26-year-old's defense team was seen rushing into the courthouse on Wednesday afternoon, followed a few minutes later by the young woman's attorneys, John Clune and Lin Wood.

All the attorneys were behind closed doors and it was not known if they were all meeting together.

Prosecutors were also seen entering the courthouse in Eagle, Colorado, where opening statements had been slated to begin next Tuesday.

This week, lawyers for both sides have been trying to select a jury.

Earlier on Wednesday, Bryant's lawyers asked the judge to dismiss the **** charge, arguing prosecutors did not disclose that one of their expert witnesses had information that could help Bryant.

The defense filing did not identify the expert witness, but it is believed to be Dr. Michael Baden, a well-known medical examiner. The prosecution has dropped Baden from its list of expert witnesses.

Bryant's attorneys said the expert's statements to prosecutors could have "undermined the accuser's allegations" and the cause and significance of injuries the then 19-year-old accuser said she sustained when Bryant allegedly ***** her.

While the defense routinely asks for a dismissal at the last minute the defense's claims about the expert witness could have had an influence on the decision.

Actually I haven't seen it close up yet but I didn't think it was quite as bad as I has thought from the comments in GM. It's a bit eccentric and - fussy I think is the word, but it's not the worst I've seen by any means. If Andy feels like wearing the subway then good luck to him. Still, I'm glad no-one else has it. Prosecutors Drop Sex Case Against Bryant

2 minutes ago Add Top Stories - AP to My Yahoo!

By JON SARCHE, Associated Press Writer

EAGLE, Colo. - The criminal case against Kobe Bryant case collapsed Wednesday as prosecutors said they had no choice but to drop the sexual assault charge because the NBA star's accuser no longer wanted to participate.

Slideshow: Kobe Bryant Case

Bryant, whose trial had been days from opening arguments, responded with an apology to the woman who had accused him and whose civil suit for damages is still pending.

"Although I truly believe this encounter between us was consensual, I recognize now that she did not and does not view this incident the same way I did," Bryant said. "I now understand how she feels that she did not consent to this encounter."

With the parents of the 20-year-old alleged victim looking on, District Judge Terry Ruckriegle threw out the case under a deal that means no charges will be refiled. Neither Bryant nor his accuser were in the courtroom.

The dismissal marks a stunning turn in the high-profile case against one the NBA's brightest young stars. For months, prosecutors had insisted they had a strong enough case to win a conviction beyond a reasonable doubt.

Instead, prosecutors backed away after spending thousands of dollars and just days before opening statements were scheduled to begin on Tuesday. Jury selection was scheduled to wrap up this week.

District Attorney Mark Hurlbert told Ruckriegle said the woman did not want to testify or otherwise participate in the trial.

Outside the courthouse, Hurlbert said the decision to drop the case "is not based upon a lack of belief in the victim — she is an extremely credible and an extremely brave young woman."

"Our belief in her has not wavered over the past year. ... Ultimately, we respect her decision 100 percent," Hurlbert said.

Bryant said the civil case against him "will be decided by and between the parties directly involved in the incident and will no longer be a financial or emotional drain on the citizens of the state of Colorado."

"I also want to make it clear that I do not question the motives of this young woman," Bryant said. "No money has been paid to this woman. She has agreed that this statement will not be used against me in the civil case."

The woman's attorney, John Clune, said she has been through an extremely difficult time since she alleged she was *****, and that she was disturbed by a series of courthouse mistakes that included release of her name and medical history. The woman has been the subject of death threats and relentless media coverage in the high-profile case.

"It is in her sincere belief that when this case ends, she does not want to be brought back into the criminal process," Clune said.

"The difficulties that this case has imposed on this woman the past year are unimaginable."

Bryant, 26, has said he had consensual sex with a then-19-year-old employee of a Vail-area resort where he stayed last summer. Had he been convicted, the Los Angeles Lakers (news) star would have faced four years to life in prison or 20 years to life on probation, and a fine up to $750,000.

Bryant apologized to the victim "for my behavior that night and for the consequences she has suffered in the past year."

"Although this year has been incredibly difficult for me personally, I can only imagine the pain she has had to endure," said Bryant, who also apologized to her family, his family and friends and the citizens of Eagle.

Legal experts said a series of court rulings hurt the prosecution's case, including a decision allowing the woman's sex life in the days surrounding her encounter with Bryant to be admitted as evidence. This was expected to bolster the defense contention that she slept with someone after leaving Bryant and before she went to a hospital exam — a potentially key blow to her credibility.

The pending civil case would have also allowed defense attorneys to argue the woman had a financial motive to accuse Bryant of assault. Bryant's defense team has long argued she falsely accused him to gain the attention of a former boyfriend, and that she was given nearly $20,000 from a victims' compensation fund.

Attorneys for the accuser complained of several damaging leaks in the case, some of them accidental. The accuser's name was accidentally released by court officials at least twice.

Ruckriegle admitted mistakes had been made and took full responsibility. But he also blamed Colorado lawmakers for slashing the budgets of the state courts system, saying less staff and more work "was bound to result in mistakes."

"We had no idea these mistakes would be under such a microscope," the judge said.

Defense attorneys this week asked the judge to dismiss the assault charge, saying prosecutors had refused to turn over details that could suggest Bryant is innocent. Court rules require prosecutors and defense attorneys to exchange evidence and witness opinions before trial, a process called discovery.

In a motion made public Wednesday, defense attorneys said a forensics expert whom prosecutors had planned to call as a witness had information that "undermined the accuser's allegations and the prosecution's case, and corroborated Mr. Bryant's defense on a central issue — the cause and significance of the accuser's alleged injuries."

The filing said those opinions were not disclosed to the defense until they contacted the expert Friday.

The motion does not identify the expert, but prosecutors this spring had said they planned to call former New York City medical examiner Michael Baden to testify about the woman's injuries.

Hurlbert had said during a July 19 hearing he had decided against using Baden. He did not elaborate.

The defense motion was first reported by ABC News, which cited unidentified sources who said Baden told prosecutors the woman's injuries could have been caused by consensual sex. Baden did not return messages Wednesday.

You're in HK, right? I guess it makes sense for you to go around Asia, but it still sounds like fun and a great experience not many high school students get.

It's like one of the best things in this school :) I mean, you rarely get this kinda trip back in Aus I guess! I have thought of going to a boarding school in Aus but it might mean banning MSN, forums, xanga and stuff like that. My cousin's boarding school does that and I don't really like the thought of that :( Plus I think we don't get tennis coverage there.......

Well I think there are probably advantages to each way - different kinds of freedom you get at school or with your parents. But I'm sure you and your family will work out what's best for you when the time comes.

You're right that not many Australian kids get to go to Beijing, LOL!

uhh close :p Here's the link if you wanna take a look. Her parents were getting divorced..which cause the rather traumatic emotional problems.

http://www.wtaworld.com/showthread.php?t=131312

Now I remember why I don't go to WTAworld anymore. Those Pred fans are fucking superior assholes, aren't they? Bitches.

I can totally believe that Hantuchova was freaking out over her parents' divorce. I'm 19, almost her age, I know I sure as hell would.

lol...... I've just been posting over there about this.

And then what saddens me is that now people are saying...... well, maybe that's an American attitude. Jeepers. I think sometimes it is harder to accept divorce when you are 19 or 20 because 1. your whole foundation is being torn up, and 2. you understand the issues better and probably are told more about what is going on.

Then imagine how tough it would be to have to possibly face questions from the press.

Steffi had trouble when her parents broke up even though she must have known for years what a philandering asshole her father was, and Stefan Edberg went through a rough patch too.

Well, considering divorce rate in America is about, what, 50%? I wouldn't be too surprised by that. Isn't it sad how cynical we've become?

If my parents came home today and said they were getting divorced, I'd flip out. I'd start worrying about money, about who I was going to live with and where, how my sister would react, why they were getting divorced in the first place, who I should be more angry with, who would get the one good vehicle we have and how I would get to school, whether or not there were any extra-marital affairs, how I would handle trying to help both my parents while being furious with both of them...the list goes on and on. To put it lightly, it would rock my world. All my sense of security would be gone.

What I think is sad are the reactions to Hantuchova that are basically saying, "She was upset about that? What a baby  " What kind of heartless reaction is that? Do people think it makes them seem tougher or more mature to pretend like it's not a big deal and it wouldn't bother them? Everybody is different; maybe something that would bug the hell out of them wouldn't mean jack shit to Hantuchova. People need to be more tolerant of their differences.

I must say I agree with what you guys have been saying about people's reaction to Hantuchova. It's freaking ridiculous! In addition to the divorce being emotional difficult Dani had the added pressure of being in the public eye and being expected to perform up to a high level. If it was me I sure know I would've been pretty screwed up.

I think it dumb that people feel they have the right to judge..they don't know anything about the circumstances or her really.

I only read through the first page because I was getting too annoyed, but at that point, most of the people being stupid were Pred fans. And they're always stupid. Not to make sweeping racial generalizations or anything, but lots of black people in the US have chips on their shoulders (which isn't entirely without merit) and seem to think that nobody's problems can compare with the horrible injustices they've suffered. Which isn't true by any stretch of the imagination, and is actually pretty ironic. You would think people who have had difficult lives would be more sympathetic.

I'm pretty good until I hit Eastern Europe. That's when it gets really confusing, because you don't hear about those countries nearly as often as the Western European countries, and then some of them have already broken up, like Yugoslavia...it's a pain :p

Unwanted pregnancy, illness/death/murder of a family member...I can think of a few things more traumatic than divorce, but not a whole helluva lot.

Again, people need to stop and realize that just because something isn't terribly upsetting to them doesn't mean that another person would handle it the same. They need to take into account differences of situation and temperment.
