I'm with you on that Vicky. Humanities is where its at for me. I was always good at the humanities end of thing but maths and stuff just didn't do it for me. I could never get to grips with it. It does sound interesting what Lauren studies and something I'd like to hear a bit more about! It just wouldn't be for me though. Marketing and languages are what I'm good at so I'll stick to that I think :)

Lauren (hark at us talking about her when she's not here!) is studying something to do with clean drinking water supplies, that's how I remember it anyway so she will have such a rewarding and fascinating career with that as it will take her all over the world and she could do such a lot of good in third world countries. But I'm with you Eimear, I would be hopeless! :) btw I pm'd you last night a really long message and it disappeared, the system went down!:( I'll try again later.

Oh no Vicky that sucks! What I usually do is copy my message before I send it because it always seems to ask me to log on again. If I have it copied I just go back into send new message and then paste it so I don't have to type it all out again! Lauren does do such interesting things by the sounds of it. If I was anyway good at maths I wouldn't have minded doing something like that but marketing is interesting too ... if I could just get a job in it!

One of the main things environmental engineers deal with is water. Some things that I could possibly do when I graduate is design or update drinking water or waste-water treatment plants, or deal with groundwater cleanup (like if it gets contaminated with gasoline, oil, heavy metals, etc.). The classes I take mostly have chemistry or water movement components to them.

Think how rich you could be if you invented an effective way to turn sea water into drinking water. :worship:

pretty much all my mates are doing some form of engineering, i asked one of them what it was and she said that its pretty much how things work (well she did dumb it down for me :p) - not that any of that will sink in im a humanities person, off to study psychology in a week. crap :o i got orientation day tommorow.

Yup, math is probably the most important thing for engineering!

Yeah Lauren I have a BA in Languages and Marketing and a masters in Business studies specialising in marketing. My favourite area of the whole marketing career is branding. I love the idea of creating a brand, building awareness of a brand, doing a campaign for the brand etc ... I came across a very interesting concept of branding when I was doing my thesis on it which was passion brands which basically deals with how people can actually get passionate about a brand for eg the Harry Potter brand or Manchester United or I guess you could apply it to Gasquetaire and Simontards too. A really fascinating area of marketing. I love it!!!

Wow, brand marketing sounds really interesting! You should work in the US, and try to get Americans passionate about the ATP...now that would be a challenging job! ;) Maybe that's too broad of a topic for brand marking though:scratch: Did you recently finish your masters? Branding is really interesting. I used it as the basis for my thesis at both degree and masters level and I loved every minute of it. My dream job would be in sports. I'd love to work with one of the leading sports brands such as Adidas or Nike or with the Manchester United marketing division. I love sports and I love branding so it would be my dream. I graduated just over a year ago and I've been looking for work since. It is frustrating because I spent 5 years studying it in college and I don't want it to have been a waste. I mean I'm working in a supermarket right now which isn't ideal but with the economy the way it is you have to take a job anywhere and I'll still have my qualifications when the jobs are on the market. Unfortunately, when companies are doing badly, the first thing that suffers is the marketing department because that's the first place they make their cutbacks. Those posters sound cool and a step in the right direction to marketing!

 it's the contrary : the bold is the correction I made. If you look carefully, the bold words are different from the ones you wrote ;)

For "tu aimerais" and "tu aimeras", both are correct but it depends on what you want to say. If you wanna say "you would like France if you ever go there" it's "tu aimerais". If it's "you will like France when you go there", you use the future, "tu aimeras" ;)

Oh, and l'ambiAnce can be used, as is atmosphère : the first refers to the feeling you got because of the people you met (it can also refers to parties at night : l'ambiance est bonne = the night life is great), and atmosphère is more a general feeling. A bit like in English I guess...

:haha: I was looking at the bolded words and thinking, "I don't see anything wrong here." But I see now. :p

Keijan (or any other Frenchies), the worst thing I do in French is to know when to use imparfait and passe compose and I make mistakes using pronouns for direct and indirect objects and adverbial pronouns (me, te, se, le, la, les, lui, leur y, en) with passe compose, in the negative with reflexive verbs and when using more than one in a sentence. If I messed up while saying this, what would the average Frenchie think? "Stupid girl" or "She's American so she gets a pass." :p

:rolls: I'm not even sure I could do that myself ! Seriously, hats off to anyone who learns French because it's so difficult even for native speakers. Nobody will laugh at you if you make this kind of mistake (or even if the mistake is a lot bigger) because we're so flattered when a foreign person goes through the trouble of learning French that we'll love whatever she will be saying or accent she will have
Well, I guess the easiest way to decide if you should use imparfait or passé composé is to ask yourself if the verb is one isolated action "j'ai joué au tennis hier" or something that used to happen on a regular basis "quand j'étais petit, je jouais au tennis tous les jours" for example.
I personally find English much easier (even if I know I still make a lot of mistakes ;))

Future tense is probably the easiest tense to learn after passe compose and present tense of course. Just use the infinitive and -ai, -as, -a, -ons, -ez, -ont. :) Well, to me anyway. :p

I never thought that way but it's very possible ! The problem with the future is that although you always use the same ends, you don't always use the infinitive of the verbs, it depends on it. For example : aller -> j'irai. I have no idea what they were smoking the day they decided that :smash:

I had the opportunity to take Spanish but chose to stick with French. I'd had it for 5 years and saw no reason to stop so I continued on for another 3.5 years. :p My school taught French, Spanish, German, Latin, and Japanese, and tried to do Italian but not enough students showed an interest. I want to take Italian here but the wait list is so long. :o I should take Spanish since it's more relevant to my area. French is an official language in Louisiana, but we border Texas and are very close to Mexico so we get a lot of Mexicans here. :)

Eimear O'Mahony

I think there are three versions of Gaelic Lauren and Irish is one of them, Welsh and Scottish being the other (They all form the Gaelic languages ... double check with Lesley though cause I can't be 100% sure) It is a very unique sounding language though and the guy in the clip, Des Bishop, is only learning it for a tv show he did here so its not 100% but you can get the gist of how Irish is spoken anyway

~*BGT*~
02-16-2009, 07:10 PM

Just in Louisiana is French an official language. It's part of our Acadian culture. In the 1600's, French people lived in southeastern Canada (Nova Scotia and Quebec) and after Britain gained control of that area, they were forced to leave. Eventually they settled at the mouth of the Mississippi River, which is Louisiana. :wavey: Louisiana is actually named after King Louis IIV (?) of France... you know the Louisiana Purchase which doubled the size of the US? That was French territory. :)

French isn't a relevant language though. You only speak in school or if a French person visits your class. There are parts of Louisiana that has a larger French-speaking population because it is spoken at home. VERY few parts though. Like Lafayette, which is about 45 minutes west of me. I went there with my French class a few years ago and I was one of the best students in MY class but THOSE kids knocked me out of the world. I was trying to talk to them in French and I was like uhh  "Repetez s'il vous plait?" "Qu'est-ce que tu as dit?" :rolls:

French is only on the signs on major highways that enter Louisiana. The signs will say, "Welcome to Louisiana; Bienvenue en Louisiane" but the average Louisianian probably doesn't know any French besides what they might hear on TV or learn in school. Basically, it's not like French, German and Italian in Switzerland or French and German in Belgium. People do not speak it here.

Welsh is still used a lot (far more than Irish I believe) depending on where you live in Wales, welsh is often the first language. I used to know quite a bit but I can't remember much now.

I think king Louis XIV is more likely... (googled it, it's Louis XIV http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_state_is_named_after_king_louis_xiv_of_france )

Interesting history lesson there ;)

I know the feeling:lol: You think you're pretty good (or at least reasonably good) and then you meet some people who are like a million times better than you are:lol: But I guess if they are native speakers (or when they speak it at home a lot... does that count as native speaker?) it's hard to compete with them :p

Well I didn't expect French to be like a real spoken language in Louisiana. I mean, americans usually only speak english, don't they? (Or is that a prejudice?)

Vickie or Tori. I answer equally to both and get called both. Just don't call me Victoria cos it doesn't feel like my real name and the only person who ever calls me it is my mum when I'm in trouble.

For the most part, English is the main language Americans speak. But there are so many people from other countries who are likely to speak a different language at home, but I suppose they would be expected to know English when conversing in public places. This is coming from a person from Maine, one of the least diverse states in the US, and everyone (except for a few French speakers) really only know English. I guess I'm not the most knowledgeable person on this topic:p I know there are some schools that are bilingual (English and Spanish) because my friend is a teacher at one in NYC. She says all of her students know English and Spanish, but some of their parents only know Spanish. Here is the wiki article on languages in the US if you are bored;) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Languages_of_the_United_States

Y'all, we had a store meeting tonight and we were discussing spring trends, which are bright colors, florals and watercolors, anything 80's and worn-in. Well, we had a fashion show and I had the worn-in look. :D I wore:

Vintage Denim Jacket

Favorite V-Neck Tee

Necklace

http://www.ae.com/Images/laydowns/Large_265/0482_9310_709.jpg

I really like this dress (it makes the "girls" look nice :p ) and will pair it with the denim jacket and some sandals

A guy at my store (who I hadn't seen in a while) was at the meeting... oh my god.. he is SOOOOOO good-looking... reminds me of Tursunov, except my age and really cute. :inlove: He even has Dima's personality. :rolls: He wore the "brights" look but I can't remember what he had on :awww: Wasn't really paying attention to what he was wearing. I was hoping he could wear the swim trunks and JUST that. :hearts: I'd post a pic but he doesn't photograph well. :ras: but take my word for it, he's really fine. :inlove:

Richie is SOOOO much more fun to watch than either PHM or Monfils. Paulo can come up with some big shots once in a while but he just doesn't have all the skills, his volley is :help: And when Monfils is in his passive mode which is frequently, its a real snoozer.

I wasn't so bad last year but the year before I had to go to hospital to have treatment 3 times because of my allergy to tree pollen because it triggers my asthma.

I hope its not bad this year. Its horrible because I hate honey but if you have a small spoonful of local honey every day from march it is meant to build up your immunity to the pollen and give you less problems with hayfever. I'm a sceptic but did it last year and I did feel better.

Oh Vickie, Good luck with the gym. I used to go but just can't be bothered anymore. It actually made me really hungry all the time when I excercised properly, well my version of properly.

I get hayfever terribly too. I've tried the honey and it does help. I have tried every pill on the market I think and a few years ago I bought a nasal spray out of my local supermarket, it's about £2.50 and lasts a few months and it is honestly the best thing I have ever tried and I don't suffer half as much as I used to. You end up spending a fortune over the summer on prescriptions. I read that the nasal spray is better as it attacks the pollen before it gets right up your nose, either way it's a pain and can make you feel really unwell and miserable over the summer.

I'm so tired whoever said exercise was good for you lied.

I think anyone can get a 6 pack if they exercise enough and do the right gym stuff but I don't think Rich really needs one to play good tennis. I'm not that keen on them anyway personally.

I must admit I'm not a massive fan of the six pack, nice to look at but not very "cuddly". We all joke about Richard's lack of a six pack as we all say it's not there due to lack of gym work but who knows?

 aww, I've been a fan since I was really little (although I'm not as big a football fan as a tennis fan so I don't always know exactly who we're playing or whatever! :o but I'm still a fan and I get nervous watching them play  ) I'm so jealous you got to go to OT, I've only been once and it was just for a friendly. I really want to see a proper match there though (and maybe once I start earning a salary I will be able to treat myself!) and I'd love to get to see Giggs before he retires. :awww: (every time I've been to a Wales match he hasn't played for some reason! :sobbing: )

Eimear O'Mahony
02-19-2009, 11:51 PM
Giggs had a bit of a weird career with Wales. He didn't play in friendlies so he didn't earn as many caps as he should have, which is a shame. I've been to a friendly, a champions league match, premiership match and a carling cup semi-final. All brilliant yet all different in atmosphere. You should go someday. You'd have a great time! Giggs only has another two seasons at best left so get there quick! You should be proud of him. He's definitely one of the greatest footballers Wales has ever produced

he is one of my heroes! I will not let anyone say a bad word about him! ;) and I know he won't be around forever (I dread the day he retires, I'll be really sad!) so I will try my best to hurry up and get some money! :p I would love to go to a champions league match, think that would be really fun (although they make me much more nervous than most matches, I guess because they are knock-out matches!) or any match really. It was still good fun to go for the friendly, it would just be nice to see a match that actually matters!

Eimear O'Mahony

You'll get to go someday I know you will! We went to a group stage game in the CL. I'd love to go to a knockout game. I'd say it'd be absolutely brilliant. I did see a UEFA Cup game when I was living in France. Shelbourne (an Irish team) were playing LOSC Lille Metropole so we went to the game. The atmosphere was even better because it was a knockout game. Actually Giggs has scored in two of the four matches I went to. He scored the only goal in the CL game against Dynamo Kiev and against Chelsea in the Carling Cup semi. He wasn't playing last night unfortunately. Anyhow I'm away to my bed now. I'll post the link to those pics if I manage to find somewhere to host them tennis lover I promise. Night everyone :wavey:

PHM floats my boat! I imagine Jo and Gael would be good fun to be around as they wouldn't take themsleves too seriously. I imagine Richard to be a bundle of angst and somebody who would need lots of reassurance and this brings out the mother in me.(I kind of expect Richard to end up with a bossy domineering kind of a partner, most men quite like being told what to do anyway, saves them having to think for themselves :o) I look at Richie and think he is extremely pretty to look at but not in a phwoar kind of a way. Too boyish but pretty none the less. I think Jeremy Chardy is handsome and Olivier Patience is DDG. Bolelli is also extremely good looking, very striking imo.

Richard (of course), Simon, Chardy, Gulbis, Verdasco, Lopez, Bolelli, and 2 new additions of Korolev (nice pictures Danielle!) and Dimitrov, and one more..
Possibly Nadal, when he's speaking English, he is adorable! Or maybe, dare I say, Djokovic. Yes, I wouldn't say he was classically handsome, but I do find him weirdly attractive when he wears one of his black numbers! But definately not in the orange and blue.

Gasquet, Federer, Nadal, Verdasco, Gulbis, Simon, Djokovic, and for some reason Hewitt too. Jamie Murray is very cute, I especially liked his Johnny Mac style. And the accent :hearts:

Gotta agree with you, Tess and Katie, about Nole. He’s not actually “Oh gosh I’ll faint right now ” on the first sight, but there is something very attractive about him.

Outside of top 100 (and good players) Mannarino and Kamke. I’m yet to find a good pic of them, though.
Kamke especially, he looks awful and not like himself in every pic that I’ve found of him.
Although when I met him he was just :hearts: :hearts: One of the hottest guys I've seen.

I could go on and on with this, tennis players are by far best-looking athletes

But I'll stop now, I think I'm boring everyone :)

I'm loving the fact I'm not the only Jamie Murray fan  Yeah I love his accent. He speaks with a real Scottish accent which I love. I wish Andy would use his real accent because it has to be as Scottish as Jamie's. I'm loving your list Lauren. I'd agree with them all bar Tipsarevic I have to say

Yeah, Tipsarevic is kind of random...I can't really figure out why I'm attracted to him, but I am:lol:

Oh get well soon Venla.
I like Jamie Murray, he sure got the looks in that family imo. He also seems like a genuinely nice guy. I read a really funny story somewhere that some fan wanted to take a picture with Jamie holding her baby (?) so she just thrust this baby into his arms and some of the other players were laughing and saying "WTH?" but Jamie was really good natured and took the picture with this baby.

I actually really liked Janko, with the tattoos and the piercings. But then he made the nasty comments about Womens tennis, WTA tour, gays and Ana:o Since then I dont like him anymore.

Yep, horrific is a word! I get that sometimes, even though English is my first language.
I get that sometimes it's so weird:lol: Cause now when I read it I'm like, yeah of course horrific is a word, you dummy. But at that moment it sounded weird:lol:

Yeah I think there was a discussion on it in the GS forum. They were talking about the Frenchies and their egos. It was a while back, shortly after I joined I think
I remember reading that! I'm pretty sure it was in Gilles' forum :) But it was a while back though...

Tess Gray

Something about her being very manly and she looks like she's on steroids:o Not implying that she was, but just said she looked like it. I thought it was very inapropriate.

I'm about 5 pages behind on the hot guy discussion but here goes:
Safin, Richie (guess we should call him "Richard" if he's a hot guy), Verdasco, Bolelli, Chardy, Nadal and Benneteau (I have NO idea why I have him on the list but something about him) in fact most of the French guys could go on my hot guy list, except Monfils. I refuse to call someone under age 20 "hot" but there are a few out there that definitely have Safin potential.

Enjoy your vacation Tess and anyone else who has holidays.

And how does Ana look like she's on steriods? Serena maybe yes but Ana

Anyone Know if RIchie is going to Dubai? I would like to see some REAL tennis.

Ana Ivanovic looking manly and on steroids??? Is he for real???!!! She is one of the most beautiful women on the tour!!! Vicky ... that's a great story about Jamie. He seems sweet. He seems like the total opposite to Andy. He is great with kids though. I saw him once at a Davis Cup tie and he had a little girl in his lap for most of the match and he was laughing and joking with her. She must have belonged to someone in the family because Judy had her for a while too

I think you sum Richard up quite nicely there Vicky. I don't know why people on other forums were saying that Richard seems to be the most egotistical. He's definitely comes across as being shy and needing reassurance. That personality is cute but personally I wouldn't like a boyfriend like that. I'd get too impatient with him

I could be that for Richard. I'm a very dominating personality and need someone submissive. He'd do. :wavey:

WTG Andy!!! :woohoo:

Roddick advances in Memphis, pulls out of Dubai

By TERESA M. WALKER – 9 minutes ago

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Andy Roddick enjoys playing in the United Arab Emirates but won't defend his title in Dubai because he doesn't agree with the decision to deny Israeli Shahar Peer a visa to play in a women's tournament.

"There were a lot of factors why I should probably go, and obviously having played well there doesn't make it any easier," Roddick said after beating fellow American Sam Querrey 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to reach the semifinals of the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships.

The mixing of politics and sports was a big part of Roddick's decision to pull out of Dubai where he won his second of three titles in 2008. Roddick said he has enjoyed himself when visiting the U.A.E. but was disappointed to see the government make a decision that reflects poorly on a great tournament.

"I don't think you make political statements through sports," Roddick said.

im wondering whether the others that have pulled out/ may pull out have done so for this reason but aren't being public about it?
i'd like richie to withdraw too, but he isnt going to get an opportunity to play in a tourny where many seeded players aren't going so it could help his ranking abit

~*BGT*~
02-21-2009, 04:29 AM
He's not gonna be seeded. He could play Murray or Djoke first round. :o

EDIT: he WILL be seeded! Because of the withdrawal of 5 players above him, he moved to #7. :woohoo: The funny thing is, he was seeded lower last year. :haha:

Schu

Bravo Andy! Wish ALL the top players would withdraw, even Richie for a number of reasons.

Everything I hear about Roddick off court is really nice. He started his foundation when he was about 20 years old and works hard to support it every year. Although I was working at a tournament right after he turned pro and they were warning all the balls kids to beware cuz if they messed up when working Andy's match, he would let them have it-now he just goes after the umpires.

Danielle are you watching Lakers-Hornets Basketball game? Go Hornets, I LOVE CHRIS PAUL, CP3-Man of Steal! But the Hornets are getting their "you know what" kicked right now - what else is new, even my basketball teams are loosers.

Posey from downtown! Hornets up by 3. NOO Posey throws it away, steal back by Paul, ARGH he misses. Great ending to game - Time out with 20 seconds left, which can be an eternity in a B ball game.

EDIT - OT! Paul why did you miss the shot at the buzzer? I love basketball cuz things can turn around so fast. And yeah Paul messed up at the end-redemption time Chris...Go Hornets.

Eimear O'Mahony
02-21-2009, 07:40 AM
That is fair play by Roddick. I really admire him for that. He's the only player who's done anything in support of Peer, which I think is disgraceful. She should have had more support. He's given up his ranking points and risked a fine for pulling out so well done A-Rod. That's good on you! And Lauren, yup should be an afternoon of cracking tennis. I can't wait!

they have Jamie Murray showing the contents of his tennis bag there. Funnily enough though, in this clip his accent is actually similar to Andy's which is weird because I've seen him interviewed on UK channels and his Scottish accent is definitely thicker. Maybe they're told to tone down their accent when they're not in the UK in case people can understand them? I'm not being funny by saying that but the Scottish accent can sometimes be a bit hard to understand ... so can the Irish one too if you're not used to it!

Cloudygirl
02-21-2009, 09:53 AM
Andy's accent is pretty authentic for Dunblane way I think. I know a few Scotish people that don't have really thick accents.

Eimear O'Mahony
02-21-2009, 10:08 AM
Ah right so its kind of like a Dunblane regional accent type thing then? I suppose I just have this image in my head of the Scottish accent because of Sir Alex Ferguson, Billy Conolly and Darren Fletcher ... they all have really thick accents  I like Jamie's accent. I just find him easier to understand than Andy. That's not a criticism of Andy. I love him to bits. Hell I love my brother like crazy yet I can hardly understand him sometimes when he talks his accent is that broad
