I did:D! In Holland it's tradition to watch stand up comedians, who look back on 2008. Was great fun:) What did you do??

I was wondering, here we actually light our own fireworks. Almost every household spends around 60 euros on fireworks each year. Is that something that only Holland and Belgium (perhaps Germany?) do, or do you also do that? I don't think I've ever heard someone outside of Holland of Belgium talk about buying fireworks

Hello girls, I had a quiet night in with hubby and kids and we watched the film "Chocolat". I'd never seen it before and I really liked it. I love anything with Johnny Depp anyway. I drunk Baileys and overdosed on Maltesers! Today, I am trying to be healthy to lose all my Christmas weight.:worship: (I'm hoping one day of abstinence will be enough ) I feel like a right heffer at the moment! :o
Tess, quite a few people here buy fireworks now for New year's eve, we didn't though, too cold to go outside. Brrrrrrrr! I want to be in Australia!

We love fireworks in the US. We can only use them around New Year's and Independence Day though. It sounded like rockets going off in my neighborhood.

I had a nice night.:) Went to a hockey game, then out for Mexican food with another couple and then came home to watch the ball drop in Time's Square (it looked so cold in NYC last night!).

I think in the US it depends on the state whether or not you can buy fireworks and set them off. In Maine, it's illegal, but in the next state over (New Hampshire) you can buy fireworks. I'm pretty sure some people bring them back to Maine though:lol: However, for 4th of July or New Year's Eve, towns in Maine can get permits to do a fireworks display...I guess it's just individual people that can't buy them and set them off:scratch:

Tess, I have to say I don't watch snooker or darts, generally the players are fairly old and large!! Not up to my tennis player standards! But I bought my dad a dartboard for his birthday so I do occasionally play - well, attempt to play. I've made more holes in the wall next to it than actually on the board!

Just before I get serious Amira, I can't resist having one last pop at Miss Gray!
I had to tune in to see what I was missing and I saw Barney! He's like the Nadal of the darts world. He actually seemed really nice when he was interviewed, but enough now Miss Gray, step away from the darts! No more darts for you else I will be contacting Dr Phil on your behalf.
As for Murray, I have to say I was really impressed with him today. I'm not a hater but I'm not really a fan either but I do admire him and the way he is prepared to take on anyone. He is fearless and would rather lose a limb than lose a match. I do find myself rooting for him in matches now so much more than before. I also think he has calmed down a lot and grown up. I prefer him to Novak and think that the top 4 spots will be hotly contended this year. I don't see Roger staying at no 2 tbh. I think the other younger guys are just too hungry. Murray has realised that if he wants to take on Nadal he has to take his fitness and his mental strength to a whole new level. I must admit it is exciting for me as a Brit to have a really decent tennis player to watch who is also British. I think he has a real chance at AO.

Looks like I missed something over the past few days - Kovolev - pretty ripped. When I opened this thread just the bare chest of Kovolev was the first thing on the page and for a milli second I thought, OMG - the new ripped Richie but alas I scrolled up and saw the face - Guess it will take Richie another year or so to get to that.

Does anyone know of a livestream for Brisbane that we in the US can see? I can't get the betfair stream and I am guessing it is because its a betting site which is not available in the US. I tried to make my computer appear to be from another country but no luck. I am rather "technically challenged" so there might be a very simple way to get that site but it would be beyond me. Well guess its not likely I'll be watching in the middle of the night anyway but if there was a chance to see Richie I could very well do it.

Well the 2009 tennis year is starting out disappointing for me - Murray winning. While I have to respect his rapid improvement and obvious committment to getting to the top I will never be a Murray fan so seeing him beating Fed and Nadal just KILLS ME!! Guess IT's up to Richard to give me something to look forward to this season cuz if I have to see Murray in all the finals I think I'll find another sport.

I'm not expecting miracles from Richard this year but I just hope he has a committment to play aggressive, continues to work on his fitness and ENJOYS playing - results will come in time and in the meantime I'll just enjoy his breathtaking game.

It's even worse when you've got an obsessed Muzza fan rubbing it in your face. Here are a few gems. :o

Wow i know Murray won,but there not much chat after this.Whats happenrd here are people in shock

Roger won once only since Bangkok 2005 v Murray.Andy @ 5-2 up v Roger has to be getting into his head now.

BGT Roddick did not even make the list (of best matches of 2008)

There was so much talk of the Big 3 + 1 that I started a thread called, "Please don't discuss the top 4 here"... and this idiot goes on to post over and over again, "Djokovic and Murray". I could have killed him. :o He's started, like 5 Murray threads this week, but on really unsubstantial stuff like "Murray signs with a new agent", "Murray ready for GS success", "Murray might switch to Kswiss." He even started a thread on frickin' Rotterdam only because Murray will be there! :shout: he makes me want to :explode:

The thing is, all the top players have their on thread in a seperate subforum where you post articles, pictures, and quotes from him. Like for fans only. The threads he's posting should go in Murray's thread. I was so happy, the last time he started one of those threads, the mods closed it and told him that stuff belonged in Murray's thread.

I know, I was following the live score from point one. :tape: He played pretty well, I think. He usually hits a low serve percentage and a lot of DF. He hit 5 DFs in his first 2 service games :help: but he didn't hit any for the remainder of the match. :bigclap: I know he's upset. He has to play three matches to even get into the MD while some players are gonna be in round 2 today. :o

Yeah, I am curious as to why that WTA match hasn't started yet. Doesn't make any sense.

Hi Jo, are you O.K? :wavey:
I feel the same about Murray. I'm gaining a grudging respect for him as I couldn't stand him at first but kind of like him a little bit now and it does make it good as a British fan, to have a British player who doesn't tank. I did like Henman but you know he would only ever get so far, there were certain players he was just never going to beat whereas Murray on a good day, can beat anyone.

And about Andy Murray, I will admit that he is becoming/has become a great player, but I'm never going to like him. Although his attitude has improved recently, I think that he just doesn't seem like a nice guy. I know it's not a reason to not appreciate his tennis, but I don't think I can ever be a fan of his because of it. Like the match agaisnt Richard (I guess I am still bitter on some level ) but he was not a gracious winner - the bicep showing etc. was just really off putting to me.
Sorry, i'll stop now.

I prefer Murray to Henman. I always hate the hype that surrounds British players but in Murray's case it's deserved. I always thought Henman played nicely and was talented but I never thought he was going to win Wimbledon (or anything major for that matter) and I just found him a bit boring. at least Murray shows a bit of personality on the court (although I know not all of you like it! ;) )

I had a dream that Andy Murray hit me :scared:

I had a dream that Murray beat Korolev in a match. And then Evgeny gave me $50 from my dad.

 The only time I've ever dreamed about Murray that I can remember; he handed me a large UK flag so that I could go and celebrate a Henman Victory at Wimbledon (only in my dreams :tape:) and then I sarcastically (I guess) told him "well done" even though he'd lost.
I'm sure he'll get me back for this dream this year by winning Wimbledon. :( Hopefully Richie will stop him this time.

Oh dear! I might just have to have a look at them now!

That pretty much sums up how I feel about Andy, he just rubs me up the wrong way and no amount of success is going to stop me being annoyed by him. The attitude improvements are directly related to the improved results anyway, I'll just say it's easier to be well behaved when winning is becoming a habit. Oh well, I'll leave it that too. I must say though that when I met him he was (of course) perfectally pleasant but I got over him again after that Wimbledon match. What can I say, I'm biast and far too bitter for a youth.

Simone Bolelli, now that's a lovely tennis player (in many ways) :)

And Lauren, I may have to hit GM to get to my 1000th post. Sometimes, I just post a word or a smiley on a thread as all part of my masterplan! I think the regulars on there think "WTH!" :(
Jo, really don't worry about that age difference, it's nothing. You can have a 50 year old man who acts like a 12 year old. Peter Stringfellow is a good example, we were watching him on "Cribs" last night and OMG, his 15 year old girlfriend (well she looks all of that :o) doesn't help. If you like someone and they are good to you and for you and act in a way that makes you happy and you both want the same things in life, nothing else matters (IMHO) :) Also, mums are usually very good judges of character!

I'm getting Sky Plus fitted thursday which means I can video matches (hours and hours of them!). I can't wait! I only really get to watch tennis when I'm on my own, my hubby and kids aren't really fans, despite my best efforts to convert them. :o

Yeah, looks like Safin got in quite the fight!! Did you see any of the doubles match? It was on late for me, but the part I saw before I feel asleep was pretty fun to watch (especially the game that Dinara got 4 aces in!).

Haha, you make it sound like you are a grandmother.;) You are more of the cool, young mom:cool:

I don't think Richie will be on livestream for his next match since he won't be on center court:( But to watch other matches, this site seems really good: http://atdhe.net/. I even saw darts on there at one point Tess;)

The tennis channel is awesome! Lots of old matches, and tips for your tennis game. I got to see a day in the life of Querrey and also Tursunov (him and his friends act like teenagers:lol:). If Richie makes it to the final, I'll be able to watch him on it:) Very exciting that you'll be getting sky!! Richie #1, I also like Nalbandian, Baggy, Verdasco, Benneteau, Mathieu, Blake and Rafa. But for Rafa (and maybe Benny) there seems to be a common thread - A BUNCH OF HEADCASES!

On the Funny Fotos thread, a lot of girls were saying they were finding Murray more and more attractive. :o Karin said that success makes you sexier. I thought, "A lot of guys in my sig are big losers and I find them hot." :rolls:

YOu guys talk lots - too many pages to scroll through - did I read that RIchie's Tuesday match moved up because of a withdrawal before him? Not that it matters no show court anyway and maybe just as well, he makes me NUTS sometimes actually watching his matches.

I think the withdrawal was from yesterday when Kirilenko withdrew.

Tess Gray

Fourier series? I definitely didn't do that until uni though. or just ordinary summations?

It could be, not trying to brag but my level of education is pretty high (for highschool material;))My teacher said that it can be compared to the first two or three years of the american "college".

Anyway, maths sucks . Well I think it's really interesting, I just can't do it! If that makes sense:lol: But I haven't given up yet :D Still trying hehe.

I wouldn't know :p Never been to american college  All I know is that it is a good education, and that's all that really matters

Lauren don't you also do college? Or do you do uni? What's the difference between the two?

The big schools are called universities and the smaller schools are called colleges (but it's all the same level of education). Like my undergraduated school had about 1800 students and is called a college. My graduate school (which also has undergraduate students) has about 10,000 students is called a university...it is probably on the small side of a university.

In any case, whether you are at a college or a university, you say that you are "in college". I don't think I've heard people refer to it as "uni", but that could be different in other parts of the country.

Do you go to a private school Tess? Do most people go to private schools in Holland?

Tess Gray
01-06-2009, 05:45 PM
Okay. I thought it was actually something different. I don't believe they have colleges in the UK do they? So it really is an american thing.

No no private school. Just a public school. Officially it's a catholic school, but I'm not religious myself and there are plenty of muslims at our school as well. Very few people go to private schools, and I mean VERY few people. Education is very well taken care of here. Ofcourse you have good schools and bad schools here, but in general it's pretty good.

That's great that your education system is so good! I wish I could say the same over here:p The UK might have colleges. I don't really know. It seems like I remember that some country calls either middle school or high school college...maybe France?

All this Math talk is giving me a headache. Those equations are a DISTANT and horrible memory for me. I was O.K. in Math but really hated it except for Probabilty and Statisitcs which I could actually see SOME practical application for - I'm sure I would never have to deal with derivatives in real life.

Looking forward to seeing PHM and Tsonga tonight - midday and early afternoon matches in Australia are PERFECT timing for me, after work but not too late in the evening. If JO and Richie are a night match in Australia I just might have to either stay up all night or wake up in the middle of the night to see it.

Generally in the UK a college is a sixth form college, so the last 2 years of school (ages 16-18) but it's optional at the moment. Most schools will have a sixth form, but you do get specialised sixth form colleges that are mainly referred to as college. Then you can choose again to go to university after that so 18+.
All the different school systems confuse me! I think everywhere should have the same and do the same exams as well.

Some things that I've liked for a long time is older stuff that my mom and dad listened to (mostly classic rock): Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Steve Miller Band, Queen, Eagles, James Taylor, Talking Heads, BTO, Beatles, Niel Young, R.E.M., etc.

Some things that I discovered on my own over the years and still like are: Barenaked Ladies, Counting Crows, U2, Keane, Green Day, Matchbox 20

And some things I've discovered in the last few years that I like are: Anberlin, Coldplay, Fall Out Boy, Yellowcard, The Fray.

I also enjoy a good hiphop/rap or pop song now and then (especially when I'm working out)...but I usually listen to my ipod or computer, so I'm not really up-to-date on new songs. Oh, and I like some musicals (but I guess I watch those rather that listen just to the music:lol:)

I absolutely do not like country

Sorry if that was way too in depth:lol: What music do you like?

Thanks for the UK explanation:) Do they do IB (international baccalaureate, i think) exams at your high schools? I remember a bunch of international kids from college talking about them, but I don't think many schools in the US use them. We take AP (advanced placement) tests instead.

RFK
01-06-2009, 06:35 PM
There are a few schools in the UK that do the baccalaureate I think, mostly not. It would make more sense if everyone did, then everywhere would have the same qualifications. We have GCSE aged 15/16, AS levels 16/17 and A levels 17/18! I wish they would get rid of some of them. We do not need external exams for three years in a row! Then exams every year of university too. You just can't escape!!

I really R'nB (Beyoncé, Usher, , Hip Hop, Regaetton ( NOT Reggae:p)anything with a good beat under it. The dutch Hip Hop scene is also pretty big. We have a few good rappers (Lange Frans, Baas B< Yes-R), so I listen to them as well. Also like French rappers and (obviously) american rappers.

The dutch also have a few good dutch singers who sing dutch but also in english (Marco Borsato, Anouk, Guus Meeuwis)

I LOVE stuff like Heavy Metal, Death Metal, Goth Rock...(Rammstein, Evanescence, Linking Park) I also love the more mellow rock like Pink, as I said before dutch singer Anouk ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BytyXtiyeDU ).

And I do like country music  Miranda Lambert, Dixie Chicks, Carrie Underwood :yeah:

Some of my fav singers: India Arie, Christina Aguilera, Beth Hart (if you haven't heard of her, definitely check her out. Personally I think she is awesome), Stacie Orrico

Think this is about it:lol:

it's as Katie (I hope I've got your name right!) said really, but we also have some colleges for 18+. They usually aren't as good as universities though and tend to do more practical qualifications rather than degrees. So I personally hate it when people (from the UK) ask me how college is going because I find it quite insulting! :o

Speaking of important stuff like shirts and hair - did you see Baggy with his almost shaved head!! Not sure what I think of it. The first story was easy, but then it moved to more advanced and longer essays, had words I'd never heard of, entire sentences I didn't understand.
