Which was better/worse: Nadal's 2011 or Novak's 2012?

Nadal followed up a 3 slam year in 2010 by reaching 3 slam finals in 2011. He only won 1 though and the year was deemed a bit of a failure by some. He made 10 finals however - 6 of them against Novak, who was clearly playing at his highest ever level. Made finals of 5 Masters, won 1.

Novak followed up a 3 slam year in 2011 by reaching 3 slam finals too. He also only won 1 - in hindsight he could have lost that too - went 5 against Murray and was down a break vs Nadal in final set. Novak has won 2 Masters so far so surpasses that count but has overall made less finals.

The difference to me is who their opponents were and what their attitude was. Nadal game-wise was clearly below Novak last year yet he kept on fighting, kept on coming back again and again and gave it his all. Novak today faced a mediocre at best Murray against whom HE was the favourite - for some reason though he was streaky throughout. Same in Monte Carlo, Rome, Cincy finals - the real Novak just didn't turn up for half the match. Whereas Nadal's 2011 was partly less successful due to an insane Novak in his way, Novak has been the master of his own destruction.

Which is worse? And why did Nadal's season feel worse even though objectively it really wasn't - he was the only one even vaguely keeping up with Novak... Maybe because he kept losing to the same guy whilst Novak has lost to all of the rest of the big 4 in slam matches this year? (Fed in Wimbledon, Nadal at RG, Murray at US Open.)

Nole 2012, he looks lost.

Djokovic lost his hunger. Nadal rose to the challenge and went about working harder and harder to defeat him which he did.

Nole 2012 might still end as nr1. But both are pretty disappointing despite the slam wins.

Nole's 2012. He's losing his spark. :(

Let's see.

Nadal's H2H against Nadal in 2011: 0-0

No2e's H2H against Nadal in 2012: 1-3

Obviously Nadal's was better.

For me Novak 2012 is more of a disappointment. Nadal 2011 was still very consistent - got to lots of finals and only lost to Djokovic and Murray in finals all season. You had to beat him - generally he wasn't beating himself. And as I said he was just against a better player.

Novak has at times beaten himself this year or not turned up fully - Wimbledon SF, Cincy F, Olympic bronze medal match, US Open F - just so many uncharacteristic matches. The reason his season hasn't been as good as last year has a lot more to do with HIM than necessarily other players. To me that is more disappointing. A come down was expected but the streakiness is odd.

Getting to double digit slams looks tough now. Murray & Nadal will fight him hard for the next few years.

I mean overall clearly Nadal's 2011 was a bit better, he had better results really, his finals were better quality GS wise. also he made A LOT more finals. he was more confident in his game and he played someone who had insane form, Djokovic of 2011 of course.

Novak is a bit MIA, his game is awry

I can't believe what's going on with Djokovic this year. He is performing so well until semi-finals/finals. Then he becomes a total pusher.

Let's put this into perspective. If Djokovic had won just 1 more set in the US Open final then this discussion would be a moot one. Given how close this match was I think it's too early to say that Nole has lost his spark. For sure he is a step below his 2011 level but he is well over 1000 points ahead of his his nearest rival in the year to date points race.

So far it appears that Nadal's 2011 has been slightly more consistent than Novak's 2012 so I will give Rafa the edge for now, but Djokovic has a very good chance to make amends for that in the indoor season.

Nadull 2011, just.

I think Nadal 2011 was better. So so so many finals failing against a red hot player. Djokovic didn't have to run into anybody having a great year.

The only reason Rafa's 2011 wasn't as good as his 2010 was because Novak stepped it up. Novak, on the other hand is clearly playing worse this year than he did last year.

Only Federer can follow a 3 slam year with another year winning multiple slams. And he did it twice.

As for the OP, Nadal's 2011 was better.

Getting to double digit slams will be very hard for Djokovic. Eight slams looks more realistic.

2011 was embarrassing for Nadal
