Murray confirms his place as one of the greats of the modern game

Well done Andy.

What a summer for British sport.

I'll start with congratulations Andy Murray.

That final was absolutely dire, though IMO.

Endless baseline rallies, with unimpressive depth and width throughout. Occasionally Murray's BH had good depth but that was pretty much it, as well as some clutch serving. Most times either went for a line, they missed but about a metre. Just rally after rally of ground strokes up the middle, bouncing around the service line until someone missed. Unable to generate any real pace, either of them. Unimpressed.

But congrats, Andy. :)

Finally!

EDIT: Conditions really tipped the tight balance here. Djoko is normally more secure breaking open their grinding points, but the wind made that riskier enough to matter. At least 50% of their points had to consist of mid-pace points well away from the lines and Murray is a master of drawing the error in those kind of rallies. Good on him to adjust as soon as Nole adjusted and add pace or spin or angle where needed. Even when he lost games and sets he and the wind had still worn Nole down by the 5th.

haters gonna hate...
although i am sad for novak, i am glad that murray stopped his run of slamless finals. would be too cruel and might even damage him for the future.
as for novak, tough luck. not that good in the first two sets and then ran out of gas in the dedider. as always, classy when congratulating his opponent. haters gonna hate, of course...
kinda worried about future grand slams, this one was really boring. so far these two produced two crap finals, one under decent conditions. once fed rides into sunset, if there is no rafa around, they have to speed up the courts. this was too slow.

Weird match that was plagued by the wind. IMO Nole was affected more but that's his problem to deal with. Nole wasn't at his best and Andy took advantage. Then Nole started to play better and Andy choked a bit. Fifth set was all Murray, Nole seemed to be out of physically and mentally.

Djokovic essentially played a complete game, constructed many more points for many more clean winners, and gave us many thrills as usual. Murray as usual pushed his way through and relied on hurricane force weather which he is able to push through better than his opponents. Better player lost today and this is a tainted win. Now retire Murray.

I'm a bit peeved. Djokovic got my hopes up too high last year. I fully expect Murray to get another slam or two next year and become #1.

While Murray had a lot of luck this tournament, the luck will would have greatly increased his confidence. Fully expect him to come back at the slams next year and go all out at them

Djokovic... What can I say. I can't believe you were pushing on your own serve. Yes, you have good defence. Yes, you want to wait for an opportunity. Seriously though? Fucking weak tactic against Murray. You know Murray's game inside out, how can you lose to him when you've beaten him easily before? Go out there on the practice courts and do serve and volleys. Over and over and over again. You need more aggression on your service game.

Playing so weak in the tie-breaker? God, where has all your power gone in these tight situations? Losing another set 5-7. How many has that been this year? Giving in after a comeback? Disgusting. Sort out your mental game.

Despicable result, every grand slam trophy will be forever tainted after this win. Mandy does not deserve a slam, this is 2003 USO all over again with USTA favoring a particular player because they hate another. Djokovic forced to play back to back matches while Mandy played with her dolls and drank warm milk during that time. Pathetic. I dislike Mugray even more now if that's at all possible. Watch Sapeclown come in here and proclaim that the pusher will win 20 slams now  This USO has been an epic fail, Hopefully Mandy doesn't come close to a final in AO.

give them a break. the weather was shit will all the wind.
he's a champ now and fully deserves it. Novak had momentum after set four, failed to capitalize or couldn't, since he started to cramp. Muzza was perfect at 3-2. From then on it was one-way street.

If anyone had to beat Djokovic in a final, I am glad it was Murray. Now we have a serious 2013 ahead of us, if everyone stays healthy.

Well, I'm by no means a Murray supporter, but he certainly deserved that one. Djokovic played awfully, whether it was because of the wind or not is irrelevant, Murray was in the same conditions.
Also, did not like that MTO much. Right before Andy served for the set... Reallly looks like Nole was hoping to make him feel the pressure to serve for his first Grand Slam and make him choke.

To those who will inevitably blame this on bad scheduling... When you see how badly Nole plays in the wind, there's every reason to think that he was saved by the scheduling against Ferrer. The way Nole played today in the first two sets shows that it was no incident, he just cannot cope with the wind.
So sure, he had to play yesterday because of the interruption. But he played only 3 sets, and Ferrer, who was obviously not in as great a shape as the day before, did not give him much of an opposition - as much as it pains me to admit it.

Really, I don't think there's much to be said about today's result, except that Nole needs to learn how to play when it's windy... And that he also played rather badly even when it was less windy.

So Andy gets his first Slam title, a lot of haters are going to have to find a new way to make fun of him.

Great for tennis - 4 slams - 1 to each of the big 4. Scrappy match overall but such drama. Novak's MTO for cramping maybe a bit dubious but who cares - those guys were killing themselves out there.

It takes terrible tennis + wind + lack of rest + bleeding on both legs (knees) from Djokovic for Murray to win a slam in 5 sets.

From a compassionate point of view, Murray needed the win more than Novak: a 5th slam final loss especially after a 2 set lead would have destroyed Murray mentally.

Hope Novak, Rafa, Murray share slams from now on. Anyone but Federer is fine with me.

Congrats Murray (and Sapeod :haha:)

Not going to lie, I was obviously hoping Djoko would take it but at least Fatbaldian moved up one spot in "best never to win a grand slam".

As for the quality of the match, it was abysmal. The wind increased the UE count a high number.

As soon as Djoko gave up 5-3 in the tb I had big doubts right away whether he could win.

Also:

With Federer getting older and older and spending more time playing with the girls, and Rafa has the knees of an 80 year old, I predict the majority of slam finals over the next few years will be won and/or contested by these two, in their prime.

So thrilled for Andy! He has won me over with his play this year. Even if sometimes it looked like old times again when he threw away those 2 sets with nothing play, he really stepped it up in the 5th. The point I'll always remember from this match was one he played at 30-30 or something in the 1st game of the fifth. Really controlling the court with his forehand, whose swing never looked more pleasing to the eye as in that moment. Even Djokovic could not keep up with it in the end.

Really baffled with the postmatch celebration though. He did have that brief outpouring of emotion after the hug, but then he goes back to his box and asks about his watch??? Really? Not even reaching out to his mom, GF and Lendl! Was hoping for it all to spill over during his speech, but no. Must be exhausted.

The ceremonies have stunk up the joint this year, giving the players no time whatsoever to savor the moment.

As for Djokovic, really pathetic ho poorly he adjusts to different conditions. He was hoping he could prolong the match till when the wind died down and he could batter Murray when it was cold and heavy. He was already out of gas though. This match-up is nice. Djokovic cannot hit through Murray and is bamboozled by the slice and flatter trajectory of Murray's groundies than of a Nadal. Murray has no problems with the backhand and feels he can get his forehand into a rhythm by going to Djokovic's more vulnerable shot.

Anyway, really happy for Andy and hope there are many more of these babies to come.

And yeah, shameful attempt at momentum-kill with that MTO at 5*-2. Deservedly booed (calling the trainer was an afterthought :o ) and as usual he took offense immediately. Face it, not everybody likes you.

Not the greatest match tennis wise, but it certainly had some drama.

Andy finally breaks his cherry and takes his first Slam title. :hearts:

Good post, the rare thing here. :yeah:

I'm actually happy for Murray. He deserved this long time ago. It sucks that he had to beat Djokovic to do it, but we all know this is the rivalry of the future. Probably the best for tennis. Now, Nole, get up, you fought like a gladiator, you will win many more majors. :)

I hope it Will be the rivalry of the future, but in that case I will have a serious problem cause I love both and really wouldn't know who to support. Today I was with Murray, he needed this and had he lost after winning Two first sets, it would have been excruciating for him.

Ny heartfelt CONGRATS to US champion Andy Murray!!! :worship: :cheerleader: :yeah:

Finally managed to break the curse of being a loser in a GS final, not unlike his coach, Ivan Lendl.

Those who complain about the wind, do remind that that wind was the same for the both of them. Even more, should Djoko have been forced to play along in his semifinal against Ferrer in those same circumstances, who would have known how that might have turned out.

Murray dealt with the circumstances a lot better than Djoko, so there's this result.

FOUR different winners in FOUR GS tournaments.
Quite a while since that happenend and I daresay, it's good for tennis. :)

Those bashing Nole can fuck off as well. 5 time slam champ, fought hard in the third and fourth, ran out of gas in the 5th but he remains the best hard court player on the tour and will be the favourite again come AO time. Nole :hatoff:

sorry to say djoker won't defend AO too. He will defend none of his titles.

Horrible match from both. I'm sure conditions contributed a lot but it was just push, push, push, push and then some more pushing. Set tennis back to the middle ages today. Time to speed the courts back up so that points can actually end and these players don't have to kill themselves physically.

Congrats to Murray on finally getting a slam title.

However, both Murray and Novak prefer the medium to slower conditions as neither is truly an aggressive minded style playing player. Nonetheless having some quicker courts would help develop the game and revive old aspects of the game especially volleying and net rushing that seem to be in a state of extinction.

very happy for Murray. would have been a very sad day for him to lose his 5th, so thank god he stayed in it! Djokovic's attitude was rather poor throughout the entire match and the only thing I particularly liked about him this match was seeing his girlfriends cute face from time to time.

big pushing match, neither player hitting or constructing that many great points. just a lottt of long extended rallies. makes you miss the likes of Federer or Nadal, who both in their own ways will eventually push the issue rather than endure rallying at the baseline for eternity. they also (the commentators as well as the players), made to big a deal about the wind. it wasn't even that windy! a bit sure, but part of tennis is dealing with the conditions and adjusting accordingly!

congratz Murray +++ hopefully you get out of your shellshock and realize how awesome your accomplishment is! Olympics + a slam, more awesome of a year than he could have imagined :) :worship:

sorry to say djoker won't defend AO too. He will defend none of his titles.

I am afraid I agree with this, his defeat will hurt so much today and now andy finally has a grand slam the confidence it will give him is good, saying that he could easily just as well go and lose to chardy again next week, I mean its good for andy he won this, but its taken so long and I am not sure how many more he can win. Nole could be done after this... we shall wait and see though.
