Upset makers ranking

We all know that the current top 4 are a couple of levels above the rest, and they are the guys who are consistently making Slam SFs and Finals.

As for the other players, when a draw of a tournament comes out, fans tend to consider some lower ranked players to be bigger threats to the big guns.

Build your own top 10 of players who have the biggest chance to upset a top 4 player. Obviously they have different chances on each surface and against each of RF, ND, RN and AM, but let's try to rank them generally.

And BTW, we are talking about Grand Slam matches.

--------------------------

1. Tomas Berdych
2. Juan Martin Del Potro
3. David Ferrer
4. John Isner
5. Jo Wilfried Tsonga
6. Tommy Haas
7. Milos Raonic
8. Janko Tipsarevic
9. Mardy Fish
10. Nicolas Almagro

Isner def roddick?

Obviously this on hindsight looks kind of normal but at that time it was quite a big deal

And against Nadal at the french as well

The exclusion of Murray makes this thread lose all its meaning. He has upset the top 3 at Slams less often than all of Tsonga, Berdych and Del Potro.

The OP says "top 4" and unless you consider your favorite player Ferrer as one of the top 4, I think Murray is included ;)

He meant the exclusion of Murray out of the "rest of the players" category.

He meant the exclusion of Murray out of the "rest of the players" category.

Indeed, and here's why:

Tsonga - Beat Nadal AO 2008; beat Federer W 2011; beat Djokovic AO 2010. Only player to beat all the top 3.

Berdych - Never beat Nadal (and never will); beat Federer W 2010 and USO 2012; beat Djokovic W 2010.

Del Potro - Beat Federer and Nadal USO 2009 to take the title; never beat Djokovic.

Murray - Beat Nadal USO 2008 and AO 2010; never beat Federer or Djokovic.

Tsonga has beaten all the top 3; Del Potro and Berdych beat 2 in the same tournament back to back (Delpo actually won the title). Murray's credential against the elite (they have won 29 ouf of the last 30 Slams after all) at Slams doesn't compare, so there's no reason why he shouldn't be in the rest of the players, especially when we're talking about Slams.

Isner does belong on the list...in the sense that if he faces that Top 4 player, he puts up a fight. He took a set off Federer at the USO when he was still low-ranked, played Nadal to five sets at FO, Murray to four sets last year at USO. His issue is getting to that match!

With that in mind, this is my list:

1. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga
2. Tomas Berdych
3. Juan Martin del Potro
4. David Ferrer
5. John Isner
6. Janko Tipsarevic
7. Lleyton Hewitt (he may not win these matches but he definitely still causes worry)
8. Gael Monfils (same as Hewitt)
9. Philipp Kohlschreiber
10. Milos Raonic

1. Tsonga
2. Delpo
3. Berdych
4. Ferrer
5. Tipsarevic
6. Isner
7. Gulbis
8. Bellucci (at least on clay, but he could in other surfaces, just wouldn't be ranked 8th)
9. Nalbandian (last few months he's pathetic, but with his IW form he could)
10. Haas

Honorable mention to Raonic, Wawrinka, Hewitt and Rosol (you know why)

1. Berd
2. Delpo
3. Tsonga
4. Cilic (I know, bad timing but based on talent and playstyle)
5. Isner (almost guaranteed tiebreaks with Isner in da house)
6. Raonic (mostly on future potential)
7. Tipsarevic (the low error version)
8. Ferrer (this list is for slams, had it been 250s/500s he'd been top4)
9. Monfils (healthy)
10. Dolgopolov (unpredictable for better or worse)
