So, it's only 12 days until the long awaited Houston!!! Now we know Guille's IN and since i'm a very anxious person i thought i'd start the commenting tread right now!!
Anybody knows who's already in and who might get in??

It said it on Atptennis.com, and masters-cup.com..Guille, Federer, Roddick, Hewitt, Moya, Safin, Henman, and Gaudio. Nally and Agassi withdrew from Paris which means that they wont get a chance to play, however, if someone withdraws then Agassi will take that place.

Maybe next week. I hope Guille, Gaudio, Moya, Henman in the same group,
but I think it can't happen :o
Last year, guille just won one match :o

Yes, I want it too, It will be good for Guille.

But Federer is the 1th seed, and Roddick is the 2th seed, so they will be in different group, I think.

An Interview with Guillermo Coria
November 16, 2004

Q. I just wondered, in view of your injury and the preparation you had coming here, is there any chance that you may leave the tournament now, or will you see it through?

CORIA: Zero possibilities I won't play.

Q. Could you look back at Safin's match.

CORIA: His level didn't surprise me at all. He's been playing very good, so his level didn't surprise me.

I didn't play too well in the first set, so I was not too happy about that. I was a little bit scared of my arm, and that didn't allow me to be as focused as I should have been.

I loosened up a little bit in the second set, and I'm very happy because I'm leaving that match without any kind of pain or without any kind of feeling the arm.

Q. I wanted to ask about the announcement that they're going to have safeguarded nutritional supplements in the drinks, the program they are going to announce at 6 o'clock; GlaxoSmithKline will take precautions to make sure there's no tainted, contaminated items that you might take. My question is in light of what happened with you, how important do you think this is? How big a step is this?

CORIA: I think it's a very important step that the ATP is doing for the players to be calm, and for them.

Q. It's very brave of you to come to the Masters Cup after not having played for something like five months. On a different note, do you think the Masters Cup should be played on clay?

CORIA: No. No, not really. Because if you're coming from a long swing in indoor or hard court, it doesn't make sense to suddenly play a tournament on clay.

But it still would be interesting that it would be done on clay for my own advantage (smiling).

An Interview with Guillermo Coria
November 18, 2004

Q. Just talk about your match, how your shoulder is doing.

CORIA: The shoulder is fine. If I'm here, it's because now it's fine. Today I felt better than the match against Safin , I could do more things. I'm a little bit disappointed with myself because, you know, it was 6-2, 6-2, but I still had some chances. I could have broken his serve.

But the positive thing is that I felt good on the court, I moved well, and I hit the ball better than the other day.

Q. How do you see Safin versus Henman ?

CORIA: Well, it's going to be a very hard-fought match, like every other match here, especially if one of the two players will qualify for the semifinal, if the winner will qualify for the semifinal.

Guille's Girl

Hmm, despite popular belief, most Coria fans are normal. ;)

A select few ruin it for everybody, just like with the Roddick fans.

Anyways, I came in here to read some comments on Coria in Houston, because the GM crap is just that... crap. None of it is worth reading; not when it's about Coria.

I'm glad that he took his well earned spot at the TMC, even if he does go 0-3. He earned it, and he deserves to be there. More than anything I just look forward to him getting back into the swing of things next season.

his latest posting . . . :)

"Yes, I am a disappointed: I felt better in the court, but the outcome of the match doesn't show it", Willy said

Despite showing his usual winning attitude and improving his game, it just wasn't enough. Guille lost to English Tim Henman by 6-2 and 6-2 and it was eliminated from the Houston Master Cup.

El Mago will face American Andy Roddick in his last match of the tournament. The number two player of the world is one of the few that Guille hasn't been able to defeat yet and this time gave El Mago the final push out of the semifinals by defeating Russian Marat Safin by 7-6 (8) y 7-6 (5).

Guille's face spoke for itself after the match: He wasn't happy at all with the final result. If he had came to play against Marat Safin seriously but knowing the difficulty of the task, this time would have been very different.

"Yes, I am a bit disappointed: I felt much better in the court than against Safin, but the outcome of the match doesn't show it", Willy said. Then, why did Guille lose it? Simply, he just needs more hours on a tennis court to get his precision and speed back.

So, even if he showed again sparks of his talent to convert on a drop shot or to left Henman standing in the net with a passing shot on the run, he just couldn't turn the good decision he took into points in his favour.

That is the logical explanation of why Guille couldn't capitalize any of the three break point chances he had in the eighth game of the first set: Henman came down from a 0-40 deficit to take the set by 6-2.

"It is true "I've loosen" my arm and felt more comfortable with my shots, but I am still feeling weird when I hit the ball. Today, I tried more things, but a lot of them didn't work. But I feel I am regaining confidence in my shoulder", Guille said.

Henman, on the other hand, connected four out of the eight break point chances he had. Which is normal considering Guille's shoulder surgery and the fact he is changing the movement of the shot.

But even so, El Mago connected 76 percent of his first services, which lead him to win 61 percent of his total point (25 out of 31). The problem was with his second service: He just won 23 percent (3 out of 13).

Compared to the match against Safin, Guille improved his numbers in two important categories: He scored 7 winners (2 more) and made 13 unforced error (4 less).

El Mago himself talked about his 2004 Master Cup performance: "To me, it would have been easy to go home and start from the beginning in 2005. But I wanted to be here despite knowing that it was going to be difficult for me to win a match. The positive thing is that I am playing painless".

About what he would do next, Guille said: "I am going back to Argentina for two weeks. Then, I'll travel to Spain to begin the preseason with Perlas. My first tournament in 2005 will be Auckland, and then, de Australian Open".

Once again, despite the loss, there is only one thing that matters: His Magic is intact.

It more like he didn't take it so seriously . . . really different attitude out there. For awhile, watching him play was really hard on the soul because it was soooooo serious. When he aced Roddick twice in the second set, he smiled because he knew he wasn't going to win the match but he aced the acer . . . he was genuinely happy on the court. Maybe content is a better word but something was different.

Hate the hair though . . .

I didn't see them . . . saw Carla, and some sorta pudgy guys . . . I'm never that impressed with the folks in his group. They strike a bit like groupies maybe . . . and of course they are so much older than he is so there's a disconnect for me. Even his last coach didn't seem that impressive. You had to wonder if he could hit a tennis ball. I don't know these folks so I am probably out of line (never stopped me before!) . . .

I wrote mean things about Gaudio today in his chat room . . . I HATE him with such a passion. I've never liked him . . . admired how he played at the French but he's such a wannabe. And his match today was a disgrace. You can't go to a tournament like that and behave that way. He just stood there. What a contrast to Coria who equally had no chance of moving forward . . . I wonder if Gaudio's performance spurred Coria on some . . . Coria has questioned Gaudio's commitment before (was it hamburg 2003?).

Yes he did but that would be okay but he didn't even try. That was what was so bad about it. He has bad attitude all around. It's a shame he won the French because he can't live up to it and he knows it.

INTERVIEW . . . FROM TODAY . . .

An Interview with Guillermo Coria
November 19, 2004

Q. I have one question about your surgery. What was it exactly? What was the surgery exactly?

GUILLERMO CORIA: We will tell you later in a drawing. It's kind of long - if you want.

They had to cut something and put it back. I don't know the name, but they took off a tendon and then had to put it together with some other parts. There was also a bone that was hurting, so they had to cut the bone.

I don't know the technical names. There was a bone, torn from 11 to 12. So they had to put it together. There was a part where the nerve was not sending information to the muscle and it got atrophied. So they went to the muscle and opened up.

They had to free the tendon a little bit, and then they put together where the nerves were torn.

Q. Is it fair to say they restructured the shoulder?

GUILLERMO CORIA: Yes. It's something that's genetic. They had to do it because sooner or later it was going to happen. So they had to do it.

Q. You played a really high-quality match today against Roddick . You almost came pretty close to taking that first set. Do you feel that maybe your level is getting back to where you were perhaps before you took that injury break?

GUILLERMO CORIA: I leave the tournament very happy. Obviously, there are some things that I have to get there, like my serve is not there, and some points, the way I play those points is not there still.

But to just come here with only one week of preparation and play like this, it gives me a lot of confidence for next year to see that I'm going to be back there.

Q. Did the doctor tell you how long it would be until you found your power again with the shoulder?

GUILLERMO CORIA: No, I'm ready. I'm ready to serve hard. There's some parts I need to work on a little bit more, because otherwise when I serve with full power, it hurts other parts. So I just have to work on that part.

But in the match, I was serving as hard as I could and I was doing okay.

yuck... no Gaston talk! :tape:

:bigclap: Guille. It takes courage to come to the Masters with so little preperation and not at full strength and know that you will probably have to take three losses, but to want to measure yourself against the very best in the game. :)

Guille never wants to take the easy way out and I admire him for that.

Coria seems cool, but the hair could use a LOT of work. It looks like an eighties rocker gone to seed.....

He was so cute in 2003 at the French Open. THat match against Zabaleta was the first time I'd ever seen him.

Good luck for next year, dude.

from his web-site . . . they are very efficient these days!! :wavey:

El Mago finished his Master Cup participation in great style, showing the quality of his game and his winning attitude. It doesn't matter that Andy Roddick defeated him by 7-6(4) and 6-3. The only important thing was watching Guille happy again in a tennis court.

By far, when playing against Roddick, El Mago played his best tennis of the tournament, showing an amazing evolution since his debut against Tim Henman.

We saw a version of a Guille who was very confident in his shots, which were very accurate, with great depth and a touch of magic. It seemed Willy was the same one he was before the injury…

With those attributes and his high first serve percentage, Guille was able to control Roddick when serving during the first set.

Add the fact that he returned very well, and there you have the explanation why it was such a close match.

But Guille didn't have a break point chance, so they arrived to the tiebreak with equal chances of winning it. Roddick put pressure on Guille's second service and that played its dividends. After 56 minutes of fight, Roddick took the set by 7-6 (7-4 the tie-break).

Willy felt the effort, showing signs of tiredness. And Roddick didn't forgive him. He broke Guille's serve in two games in a row and took a 5-0 lead.

As usual, El Mago was not about to go down easily. He won three consecutive games to cut the lead to 3-5, but…

Roddick and his service were just too much (he scored his 1.000 ace of the season against Guille).

Guille will now travel to Las Vegas, where he will meet with Gil Reyes. Then he will fly to Argentina, where he will stay for two weeks before going back to Spain, to begin his preseason work with his new coach, Josep Perlas.

In his last match of the 2004 season, El Mago impressed everybody, showing that he has what it takes to be the number one player of the world. Thanks Guille for so much magic!

Yes! I saw him first in 2002 in Houston and then in 2003 and 2004 at IW. I sat right beside Carla at his match with Max Mirnyi this year at IW.

I don't ask for autographs or speak to any of the players. But I watch as others ask for autographs and photos. Guille seems to like to take photos with his fans. When Carla kissed him after his match with Mirnyi, she was standing waiting with some of his fans for him to come off the court, and sort of had to grab him and kiss him in the midst of his giving autographs, and one man watching thought Guille was giving kisses as well as autographs.

He wasn't paying much attention to her. He was busy signing autographs, and she was waiting for a chance to give him a victory kiss. I thought he could have gone up to her early on, but... what do I know.

Sitting beside her, Carla seemed to be a very nice girl who liked to laugh. She clearly likes to dress up and look cute and fashionable. She was wearing a pair of three inch mules that I thought looked a little uncomfortable for treking around a tennis tournament site. She had on a lot of little rings on her fingers like a lot of young girls do. She just seemed like a nice girl. She even shared a little joke with me. Evidently she called a double fault right before Max double faulted, and the coach gave her a high five. She was laughing and looked at me and shared the laugh. I mean by that time it was pretty clear I was cheering like mad for Guille. She was pretty into the match. She wasn't just sitting there.
