Congrats Murray. Utter thrashing.

Fed moving like a panzer to his FH side.

Fed gets a Silver medal and now only needs a Bronze medal to complete his resume. :rocker2:

Only thing that bugs me is that Fed is again down in the H2H against Murray after equalling it. :(

Will winning the olympics do for Murray what winning the davis cup did for djokovic?

Well done, Muzzah, you deserved something big like this man. Enjoy and I hope this propels you to play better and get that craved slam. Shame you had to deny Roger but I guess if he had to lose one, this one was meaningless compared to Wimbledon.

Terrible match from Federer, especially the second set.
I guess it is asking too much from a 31 year old after the gruelling SF.

Good win for Murray. Better player by miles today. His first Bo5 final against any of the top 3. Should do wonders for his confidence.

Quite a trashing despite close scoreline in the third. It wasn't close gamewise. For a couple of sets Federer even played better from the ground than against Del Potro , but he didn't served as well as couple of days ago. His face expression after being "bageled" said that he would rather swap the Wimbledon win from the last month for the gold medal in here. I doubt he will be a big factor in the next games (if he even plays then). This could be a big turn in Murray's career. :yeah:

I don't think this should even matter much as far as Bo5 is concerned. This is about as far from a 5 set match as possible.

So the only way that Murray can win a best of five final is if all the other matches were best of three.

Really? Why is that?

Roger finally looked his age...the semifinal just taxed him too much. He was playing with cinder blocks attached to his feet. Murray was just too fleet-footed and consistent today.

Good for Murray. Can't say I'm a big fan but I think it'll be great if he wins a Slam and really earns his place at the table with Roger, Rafa, and Djoker.

Murray deserved at least one big title for his dedication and effort in getting to threatening positions at the tail ends of these larger tournaments. Well done to him. Would have been nice to see Federer win the gold, go to Flushing Meadows and beat Nadal in the fifth set tiebreak beneath the lights on Arthur Ashe before calling it a career, but it was not to be.

As a FedERROR fan. I'm happy for Murray. He was demoralized at Wimbledon. Hopefully this gold medal will help alleviate some of that stress and pain. He defeated Djokovic and Federer in a small run here hopefully he can use this gold medal triumph to win either Australia or Wimbledon next year as I believe his greatest chances are in those two tournaments.

Murray played a good match, although even with the completely lopsided tennis he still got occasionally tight. Deserved.

Fed completely without legs, I'm guessing all the matches he's played to get to #1 finally got to him and there was just nothing left from the start of the match. Probably the first time I've seen him like that (if there is no injury, hopefully not), but it had to happen some time. Still kept on fighting till the end which was admirable. :worship:

Awful match by Fed, although Murray did play very well. The match against Del Potro was like a 5-setter with a few tiebreaks, and he had 2 days to rest so he shouldn't have been that tired. I feel bad for Murray, won Wimbledon but is still slamless and will remain so.

Federer can never be GOATlol stop whining, clown.

Murray played inspired tennis, he was just not going to lose in front of this crowd again. Has a real shot at the USO, who would have thought.

Federer, on the other hand... I have NEVER seen him play with this little confidence. After he lost that fourth game in the second he was done for. He shanked backhands, forehands... Mind-boggling really. Maybe the pressure got to him for once. Funny for a guy who's won 17 slams. Too bad he didn't get that elusive gold after all his waiting, but the better player today won. At least Roger has a medal now.

As you age, more than your tennis ability it's your ability to recover from match to match that most declines. At 31, it was highly unlikely that Federer would recover from his incredibly grueling semifinal, both physically and mentally. I had said it in the WWW thread and so it happened.

Federer was drained and Murray pounced on it. Congrats to Murray, great tournament from him, winning gold for GB is a great achievement.

Murray played well, glad that he finally has a huge and very important title, and made his country proud. He is too talented, too good to always stay empty-handed. Well deserved.

Too good Murray. Credit where it is due. He just played a perfect match. Roger just had nothing going for him today. Added to it, a little fatigue from the semis? Maybe a little, but even a fully fresh Fed would have had a tough time today with the way Murray was playing (and focusing). Too good.

Roger deserved better after the effort he put in last friday, but really, winning silver isnt so bad, he won a medal for his country. True, he couldnt complete his resume and win the Golden Slam (which he perhaps deserves more than any one really). But still, its not because of lack of trying. He had the burden of carrying a whole nation, it showed in all the 4 olympics that he played. Still he managed to get something out of this one. As a fan, I am of course disappointed today that he didnt take his chances in the first two sets (0/9 BPs was iot?) but it was just one of those days  A silver and a Gold from the 4 olympics he has contested. Great effort Rog :yeah:

So great for Murray to finally break through, he deserves this fully, the crowd really carried him so much. He must be wishing Wimbledon had been the same. However, he really tried to destroy Roger there, I do not think the Swiss is going to take kindly come Flushing Meadows :armed: You just may have shot yourself in the toe Andy ;) j/k...maybe this will be a springboard for him. Great reaction anyway after the wimbledon disappointment. I am no fan but well done Andy :yeah:

Indeed, good for Murray. If RF had to lose against any of the top 4, Muzz is 100% my choice. I hope he really gets some confidence going and starts destroying Nadal and Djokovic on the US HCs (the fast ones) as often as he should with the game and talent he has.

This gives GB their 17th gold and this is only 2 short of their gold medal totals in Beijing where it seemed they outdid themselves . Congratulations to them even though I hoped Muzz would win his gold in mixed this time around.

The crowd were really pathetic and cheering for errors. Obviously, not tennis fans or anything close to that, so sort of expected but still tough for Fed to face such a tough opponent. Nadull had the old man Gonzalez but what else is new.

See you in Cincy, Roger, where you should do well and keep your #1 :D.

obviously i am very disappointed because this was Fed's last chance for a singles gold medal but the truth needs to be told and Fed didn't deserved this win. survived some big scares in last few months and match like this was long time coming. congarts to Murray, well deserved win, was the best trough hole tournament. Always knew his only chance to win a huge match against big 3 was waiting for Fed to appear like today . Still don't believe he is capable to beat Nole or Nadal in slam final. Still see him going away when somebody makes it close. Even today only times he was making few errors was when Fed played few decent points. Just 0/9 on BPs was beyond pathetic. Would like to be wrong in Murray's case because after all breakdowns Murray is coming back and deserves to win a slam one day

Well deserved. Congrats to Team Britain. some nice scenes after he won the match.
After this crule semi-final Fed didn't have much left in his tank, both mentally and physically and
was destroyed by Murray's cc FH.
It's quite nice that the two best grass-courters of this season share both big titles.

lol at all the Fed haters in this thread, you're all hella funny :)

On a more serious note, this just comes to show Fed has to start pacing him self, the last 2 months were far too intense for him and he'll have to start giving some tournaments up. He's got his # of weeks at #1 record and there's really no reason to keep the intensity as it was till now. Very good move to drop out of Toronto, he must have felt that match v Delpo took everything he had.

But none of this comes to take anything away from Murray. The man walked onto to court with intention from the get go and never let off. Had maybe 2 bad games the whole 3 sets and knew exactly what he wants and how to take it. His serving at the last game reminded me of Rosol v Nadal so much, same kind of uncompromising intense look. Way to go Andy, that's one very deserving gold medal!

:yeah:

Respect your opinion and mostly agree with your analyzes and agree that Fed was bad against Delpo but this statement is :stupid: . delpo was even more aggressive than Murray today and still Fed looked decent from the ground . Murray didn't do anything unexpected, forcing Fed's backhand which neither first neither last time broken down

Murray didn't play any better than he did in the Wimbledon final. He played very well in the first set of the Wimbledon final and then Federer raised his level.

Exactly my thoughts. Murray didn't do anything impressive. Just Fed was pathetic. In recent successes against Murray the key of winning was running around backhand and hitting as many FHs as was possible . And today footwork was awful. The same like mentality on big points

Roger was physically and emotionally drained after the SF. He doesn't usually celebrate too much after a SF (except maybe FO 2011 - and that didn't lead to a finals win either); maybe this time he let it all out too early.

Andy was the best player of this tournament so it's not just that Roger was flat today, it's that Andy was on fire.

Congrats Murray. So happy for him, he needed this and the way he won it too was amazing. Good for him

On a less positive note, this will now put more pressure on him to in a slam especially at SW19, now that the British crowd have seen him win here.

AnnaK_4ever
08-05-2012, 04:38 PM
The outcome wa barely in doubt given how solid Murray looked in his SF and how poor Federror played in that overhyped Delpo match. No roof diminished the rest of Roger's chances.
I know many posters will go on about Federer's forehand being shit in this match but to me the biggest shock (well, not exactly a shock but still...) was how much his backhand regressed. It has never been his forte but nowadays under pressure it turns almost into a club level shot. He can't even junkball off this wing properly unless he plays indoors.

Full credit to Murray though. It's amazing how much better he performs in non-slam semis/finals, actually going for his shots and being not afraid to hit his forehand. Brilliant week for him.

Indeed. Murray kind of deserved something like this. It's not a Slam, but winning a gold medal for your country (especially at home) is a very special achievement itself. And he can still win another later today, great times for Murray.

Team GB is doing great alright, I'm sure they'll be third in the end, only behind China and USA.

I think Federer felt relieved after securing himself a medal after that semi. Subconsciously, maybe even consciously, he exhaled after that match and the slightest drop in form usually spells doom against top players on the ATP. Federer came out flat and seemed almost disinterested today. Or just okay enough to be there and that's it.. I don't know about tired but I think the hunger, focus and intensity were not quite there and maybe the body soon followed too.

And for Murray. Congratulations and respect! Although he still has to 'prove' himself by winning a slam. Easier said than done. But I think he'll eventually do it. Olympics gold is a nice consolation prize but still it's only a consolation prize compared to the majors, which absolutely define a tennis player's career. As for the gloating trolls and insecure people here who are saying this 'proves' something about Fed. You reek of resentment, pettiness and jealousy. Grow up.

Meltdowns can happen to anyone and they are happening to everybody. The things which is more worrying in Fed's game is wasting of big points. Even in semis and finals of Wimbledon in moments when match was going on one or other side he needed zillion chances before he took it, in third set against Nole and Murray he needed something like 5-6 BPs before he took one. In semis against Delpo his BPs converting was 2/13 but he was good/lucky enough to get one more . Today in first two sets he was 0/9 and didn't get tenth. In sport where one point deciding the match this is an awful cognition for Fed

Why did they play 3 sets when Andy had already won the first 2?

Great stuff from Muzz, really happy for him. Fed was pretty damn bad.

Congrats to Andy it was great to watch him play all week. This will not be the last 5 set final he will win. It was almost too bad it was such a mismatch. It's like when Andy beat him in Shanghai, it almost makes the victory not as sweet when its that easy.

Anyway Fed's best surface has been the USO for years now, no doubt about it. I actually think he plays worse on grass than on clay.

On a brighter note Fed had just completed his silver collection from the biggest tennis tournaments: 4 slams, WTF and Olympics. Could have been Carer golden slam + WTF. That would have been a nice addition in his resume.

He lost a US Open final? Oh yeah, to Del Po! I almost forgot.

Lets be clear here, losing this would have been unbelievably bad for Andy's career.

With Delpo winning a medal, revitalised. Nadal coming back to fight, hungry. Andy finally relieved of pressure. Novak defending his points and Roger trying to add another scoop of victory on that grand slam sundae we have a beautiful US Open series coming up.

Can we all for once be proud of our sport and get behind the common cause of exposing this great game to the world for it's captivating power and beauty.

Pretty shit quality for most of the match, Federer finally punished for his shit level of performance, worst number 1 in a long time.

Congratulations to Murray. He played a fantastic match. I am a little disappointed that the match wasn't closer, but a silver is a great result for Federer.

Hopefully this win will lift Murray and he will finally get that elusive slam.

People need to stop saying that Federer is over and that he needs to retire. The guy just won Wimbledon, got the number 1 ranking and is a silver medalist. It seemed to me like he was completely drained emotionally after that epic SF, and that he was happy with a silver medal.

I would rather have a loss like this happen at the Olympic then at Wimbledon. Federer would have been absolutely devastated if this was the score 4 four weeks. Now he will get some much needed rest, and hopefully he will be ready for The USO.

Yeah, he's an 80s action star.

Congrats Murray - well-deserved victory. :yeah:

Gutted for Roger, but I guess you can't win them all.

proud as hell of Muzza, what a true champ he's proved to be :yeah: go and suck on that hatas and get ready for more pain when he starts doing this in slams http://www.planetsmilies.com/smilies/happy/happy0035.gif

nothing you can say for Fed, pressure of having never won singles in Olympics you could see in his game in early rounds/SF and it took everything he had left just to make the final, he needs to recover from this but seemed pretty content with making the Final here

no matter what golden slam tards say, Fed has Olympic Gold and Silver medals in his career, simple as that.

You'd think the first sentence would take priority over the second. What, I gotta make it sound like a contract or something?

Bottom line: All 6 are the only ones of this era to (this one's for you, buddy) EITHER make a GS final(s), won a GS, and/OR won an Olympic Medal.

I mean damn, can't give Roddick any credit, lol.

What era, you mean from active players? Even in that case, what makes Roddick and Murray bigger than Hewitt, just for an example?

Would have loved witnessing Del Potro taking the gold medal in the end. :worship: DelPo :worship: This guy is top quality on and off court.
Would have preferred to see Federer achieving the Golden Slam thing. :hatoff: Federer :hatoff: Simply the best!
But Murray winning it?! :woohoo:
I'm truly happy for him and his people. Congrats!!!

MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAA!!!!!!!! :worship::worship::worship:

Roger utterly and completely destroyed on grass ? Never thought I'd live to see the day.

Anyone who thinks that mammoth match in the semis did not have an impact on his performance is completely retarded  He'll win the gold on clay in RIO :rocker2:

Hopefully this will do for Murray what the DC win did for Nole. Can't wait for the USO. Time for that 1st slam.

I think Andy's win sets up an amazing run up to the US Open and WTF.

He's finally got over the hurdle of never beaten Fed in a best of 5. I hope the floodgates will open and this new found confidence will result in slam wins.

Go team GB!!

Congrats to Andy on winning us another gold!

He was brilliant today. Completely wiped the floor with Federer. Hopefully that gives him a lot of confidence heading into Grand Slam matches now.

I think people are reading too much from this loss. Fed got Wimby, let's keep that in mind. After the Delpo match he looked relieved to have gotten the elusive medal, a medal, in the singles after already getting a gold in doubles. The focus, the hunger, the intensity wasn't quite there. We're getting some ridiculous suggestions and conclusions on this thread because of a loss in the Olympics (lol). If you get these:
a) Federer is dead
b) Federer should retire
c) Murray is the next Federer
d) none of the above

"d)" is the sane and wise choice. Or we can keep this hysteria and the crazy predictions that follow up. How about let's relax people, breathe in, breathe out, lol.

Nope. Byron Black def. Roger Federer 6-3 6-0 in Queens Club 1999.

Btw, Hope Murray wins the Gold in Mixed too. The dude deserves it for the way he played all tournament. He made the pressure work in his advantage, as opposed to poor Roger. GL! :)

too early to say, he just won a bo5 against an tired/injured old player.

He needs Fed, Nadal & Djokovic to be unfit in the 2 slams.
