Is Novak's ROS the biggest liability in his game right now?

Seems to me he just can't or won't play the normal return anymore. It's like he goes for broke every single time. At first, I was thinking it was some kind of strategy to prolong his career by avoiding points where the opponent has the advantage from the start. Now he just seems incapable of playing them in any other way.
Add to that complete lack of block/slice return and we are left with a shot that is not even top 5 in current tennis, let alone of all times.
Completely overrated shot, at least as of this year.

Grass courts have an unpredictable bounce. He prefers hardcourts.

Same serve = different bounce on grass. His ROS is awful on grass, but some players(like Murray) are more constant in that department and Djoko without it is version from 2010.

I haven't really noticed nor paid too much attention to that but I will pay closer attention at the U.S. Open to see if indeed his ROS rate % has dropped. On grass courts it is not uncommon though to have difficulty returning. Players typically live off their serves.
