When will Del Potro win a match against Federer this year?

Surely it's about time.

He lost 6 consecutive times, but he last two times were very close.

I hope it'll come at a Master Event rather than a Grand Slam, so both Del Potro and Federer can get it out of their system.

I have to praise Del Potro for his sportsmanship, he greeted Federer warmly at the net each single time he lost.

The same can't be said about Nadal.

I doubt he will tbh, Cincy would be his only good chance. They meet 1 time again at most this year.

Edit: forgot DP will make the WTF, so they'll meet twice at most.

Can't see it happening. Federer is such a horrible match-up for Delpo...Delpo tries, but mentally he would be suffering every time he sees Roger on the other side of the net.

The way this is going, the H2H will very likely become like Federer-Roddick H2H, the only difference being that Delpo actually has beaten Federer in a slam unlike Roddick.

Nothing wrong with that, Del Potro showed he can play better than Federer on HARD COURT.

Yeah, that's why he has 1 slam while federer has 9 HC slams (USO and AO).
As for the thread question, i don't think delpo will beat fed this year. The Olympic defeat was probably the last straw and it has to affect him quiet a bit.

Yeah and Federer had injuries problem and Delpo turned pro in 1998 too. Comparing apples and oranges.

On hardcourts, Del Potro should do better against Federer than at the Olympics.

Yeah, moves a lot better on hardcourt and can returns more serves in play.

No doubts in my mind that if olympics had been on hard Del Potro wouldn't be far from gold.

If they meet at USO it should go 5, wouldn't be surprised to see Delpo taking it again.

he's gotten closer and closer each match this year. like fed admitted as well, he should have won at RG, and yesterday - well, in my eyes there was no loser.

i say he gets him next time (here's hoping in Tokyo).

tennis needs the kid to step up. asap.

Not happening. His best chance is on clay.

In second part of the season when fed is dominant, no chance. I doubt Fed will ever match his clownery level of thet 2009 US final to gift the win to DP.

I'm assuming you mean matches in slams. The world #1 and del potro have met 6 times in slams. The world #1 leads 5-1. :wavey:

Question is if Del Potro will beat some record of most losses in one year to the same opponent, he is already equal to Nadal in 2011. He lost 6 out of his 11 losses to Federer, quite remarkable.

Not sure about this year (they might not even face again), but he'll defo beat Federer again. He's too good not to. Besides, only way for Del Potro is up, while for Federer it is down unless he can somehow reverse the aging process. By staying on tour for long, Federer will inevitably be handed some defeats against younger opponents, one of them, being Del Potro.

I still can't see how Federer managed to lose the US Open final match.

and i still can't understand how people keep saying stuff like that considering all the tigth matches between federer and del potro. in that regard, did yesterday's match didn't go to over 30 games in the defining set?

He'll need to wait until Olderer is 50 years old to win a match against him. By this time one of his girls will have a baby and he will become Grandfatherer, only then Del-Mugtro will squeak out a match against him. At this point Olderer will be serving underhand and hitting his forehand with two hands because of lack of strength. He'll still push this ballbasher to tight 3 or 5 sets depending on the format of the match.

HC is worse for Delpo. He hold so long against Fed due to the grass, hitting big will be unretrieveable on grass. In HC fed will return much more.

2009US nice relaxerer, main objective is entertaining to show he beat everyone with any style, neglecting tactics.

Don't know about reversing, but federer has managed to stagnate the aging process. He is playing like a 27-28 year old would (not him at 27, but a normal top 10 player).
If you want the normal trajectory of a tennis career, refer roddick.

When will Del Potro win a match against Federer this year? When else but on the highest stage, i.e. a slam final

When else but on the highest stage, i.e. a slam final

So you're assuming they'll meet in the US Open final. First of all there's a 50% chance they'll be on the same half. Secondly if they're on separate halfs they still need to reach the final. To top it off del potro is 13-2 lifetime, 6-0 this year and 5-1 in slams against Roger.

Your prediction is not looking good.

I think del potro's best chance will be in the qaurters of the us open because he wouldn't have to beat any of the top 4 before meeting Roger. Of course for this to happen del potro will have to get drawn into Roger's quarter. With Roger's "luck" in draws overal I can see this happen.
