Has Federer ever won a match from match-point down?

I can remember him losing on at four occasions from match point up, but not the other way round. Nearest he came that I can remember was saving MPs in a tie break against Rafa in *that* final, but of course he went onto lose.

Nole on the ther hand makes something of a speciality of this.

Could be a stain on Federer's legacy.

Where are the MTF experts to clarify this?

Off the top of my head, he saved a couple of match points in Halle 2006 against Rochus

He may have had one or two other matches, but I can't remember.

Regardless, saving match points is nice and all, but just a cool stat.. I mean losing a match is still losing a match, match point or not.

Agreed. Clearly meaningless, unless a player develops a habit of getting to match point and losing. I've tried to think of examples for a while and today's match reminded me. Del Potro got within two points of victory on numerous occasions, but never one.

I can remember a lot of matches, but big quantaty here really doesn`t show smth wonderfull. If player wins many matches with mps down, i guess it shows vulnerability in the first place. I prefer as little such wins for Fed as possible. :) But sure, that`s better than losses. Simply not that relevant.

Would be such a huge blemish if he hadn't. Too good to go MPs down.

I think in 2005 during the tournament in Dubai he was down MPs to either Ferrero or Rochus and ended up winning.

This is one I did remember, but I wasn't 100% sure, so I didn't say anything. I 99% sure he had to save one against Ferrero in Dubai.

He did against Ferrero, on Ferrero's serve in the third set tie-beak.

not only are the haters swatted away

but he did it against agassi
in america
on hardcourts
saved match point on his serve, then saved it on agassi's serve
and to top it off hit one of the sexiest match points of all time
its one of the most celebrated matches of the decade and was the de facto changing of the guard

and the cherry on top?

they met again in the final and federer bagled him

fuckin' A

You are reading *way* too much into this. I'm a huge Fed fan. I just couldn't remember such an example, and I've watched him quite a bit, so thought I'd ask people here who remember these things better than me. It matters not a jot, it would merely have been a statistical anomaly if he hadn't done this, but he clearly has.

It is still surprisingly short list . 12 times in 12 years, average 1 saved match a year.. I thought he had lot more.

This is encouraging fact for Murray, all he needs on Sunday is somehow to get matchpoint ... or better two... or 3 in a row ;)

to save match point you have to be match point down in the first place

Yeah it's kind of true, Federer has also lost 11 matches after holding MP's.

Federer lost only couple of matches in his prime and most of his wins was very one-sided.
He didn't have too many opportunites to come back from a mp-down.

We didnt talk about 17 or other records, we talked about one stat only, dont be so defencive ! Noone is trying to put asterix on his achievements. But this stat would be more interesting if we compare it to other top players similar stats ,from present and past

How many matches a year Sampras saved, or Lendl or McEnroe ? How many Hewitt in his prime, Safin, Nadal or Djokovic ? Just useless mens tennis trivia, but interesting to know.

It would be huge work though, even with all computer databases we have now.

12 is low amount? Averaging 1 match per year saving MPs and winning for 12 years is very surprising to me, I thought he had 8 at most.
