Del Potro hitting lines on lobs, volleys, FHs, BHs, you name it.

Wow, epic match :worship:. Not many saw this coming, I know I didn't.

Del Potro played really well, Fed was very shaky at the start. Got bailed out by his serve very often especially in the second set.

Third set was top-notch stuff from both, incredible tennis. Huge heart from both, Del Potro barely holding his serve, hitting the lines and dive volleys. Meanwhile, Fed holds many times when losing serve would've meant he's lost the match. Of course promptly loses his serve to love when serving for it the first time with Del Potro hitting the lines.

Incredible :worship: to both guys :worship:

Hope JMDP will this form up this year and start threatening for the nr.1 in 2013 so that we'd have interesting times ahead with more serious challengers to big titles :yeah:

DelPo played well, should take some confidence into the HC season.
As for Fed, he took all-serve to a level that Isner and Karlovic could never dream of. If the roof isn't closed on Sunday he is absolutely fucked against Murray or Djokovic.

I'm sad for Delpo. He played one of his best matches in the last couple of years but it wasn't enough. Unlike many Fedtards were saying when their idol was in trouble, this match was very good. Epic one

Delpo deserves a medal after this performance but hopefully he'll get it only if Nole wins today.
Oh and you can tell how much this means for Federer by his celebration at the end

Legendary match.

Tons of great tennis, super intense, and full of drama. Loved it.

You can definitely tell Fed wants this pretty bad, even kissing the swiss badge at the end.

Poor Del Potro looked completely heartbroken in his chair after that, but if he can avoid injury and carries that form into the HC season he's going to destroy people and will be a serious contender at the USO.

Monster serving performance from Federer, first two sets he had 80% first serve, everything in corners. And he kept serving in the corners except when he served for the match(both times). Apart from that only retrieving worked. Medal guaranteed for Switzerland.

Sorry to del Potro and his fans. It's always tough to lose a match like that.

I wasn't convinced del Potro was actually at a level good enough to consistently challenge, at least before this match. On the hard-courts, del Potro can turn these performances into wins, I'm sure of it.

It was just meant to be for Roger, but for some reason, I'm not that happy. I guess del Potro losing is tough.

What a match. I don’t know how Fed managed to pull through, because it really felt like Delpo was unstoppable and clearly had the mental edge after breaking back to love in the third and holding those service games from 0-40 and 0-30. Not to mention Fed had the added pressure of serving second in the final set. Outstanding stuff from both guys. Delpo’s dive volley at 8-8, 0-30 :hearts:

Well done, Escaperer.

really can't understand fed's mindset. if somebody is serving to your backhand for 4 hours in 90% of cases even the dumbest son of a bitch would risk more on return and take this serve from delpo. second thing which disgusted me in his game were passing shots. in today's game even some random clowns hitting passings if there was even a little margin for it but Fed can't even on easy balls. this costs him big time

How is Del PO losing another close match after being up say he's back? How is this that much different than the French Open match?

in french open , del potro was owned federer and you forget that he had physicall problems???????

anyway , del potro playing and serving like this can win the us open , I am sure that he can beat nadal easy in usa if he plays like today for example.....

and he can beat novak too , always delpo made problems for nole , with murray and fed it`s more difficult for him , but del potro rally from the baseline and with this power in decoturf can produce a serious damage

really can't understand fed's mindset. if somebody is serving to your backhand for 4 hours in 90% of cases even the dumbest son of a bitch would risk more on return and take this serve from delpo. second thing which disgusted me in his game were passing shots. in today's game even some random clowns hitting passings if there was even a little margin for it but Fed can't even on easy balls. this costs him big time

One word - nervousness. He actually said that in one of his earlier interviews during the Olympics (I think after winning against Falla).

This match is overrated. Apart from the serve, Fed was crap most of the time and Delpo was good for a player playing on his worst surface.

Partly right imo. Fed seemed very nervous throughout, and Delpo played pretty good, especially considering the surface. But Fed's fight got him through. You could see the emotion when he got to matchpoint already. I've never seen him this nervous. The match was great because of the scoreline mostly, and what was at stake (more for the players than for us I guess).

Also him kissing the Swiss flag was unexpected for me.

MTFers never see anything coming other than a repeat of previous matches and "mugs bending to their master" anyway.

They don't know anything about sport, and even less about Olympic spirit.

Great match I comment rather in the "hate-free zone"

On one point : some say it's Del Potro's worst surface, well it's true but it's also clear that when the weather is dry, it's not really grass in its slippery meaning

DelPo played well, should take some confidence into the HC season.
As for Fed, he took all-serve to a level that Isner and Karlovic could never dream of. If the roof isn't closed on Sunday he is absolutely fucked against Murray or Djokovic.

Why did he threaten Del Po on his serve so much in final set then ?

Nice touch that Fed kissed the Swiss flag on his shirt after the match, I think winning for his country means as much to him as it does Murray, Djokovic, or most other players. His win is the first medal for Switzerland whether silver or gold.

So does Delpo have to play a match with the loser of Murray-Djokovic match for the bronze?

He has a day off, and not that it makes a difference, is going to have several hours more rest than his opponent, who are very possibly going to play a 3+hour match themselves.

Dude the match was 4 and a half hours long. "do the math"...

Ummm Federer was at his best at 22-26

Yes he was a better player, but physically speaking he isn't much worse off.

A couple of days ago I said that Delpo won't win another big title IMO.
Guess what, I still think that way, but with one difference : I like him now. Not as much as other favorites of mine, but he earned my respect today and now I hope my prediction is wrong.

Good luck to him ! (especially when he plays someone other than Federer, Ferrer, Wawrinka and Haas) :p

So fucking proud to be a Roger Federer fan. Could have choked it away after losing serve when serving for the match but hung in there with all his might, stubbornly refusing to lose. Fucking amazing. He won in spite of his subpar level of play and his opponent's almost JesusFed-like level. This was 99% heart from him. What an inspiration he is.

Del Potro. definitely felt bad for him at the end. The match was incredible because of how much both guys wanted it. That game when delpo came back from 0-40 and won in the third set was brilliant from him. His serve was brilliant throughout. It's just too bad one of them had to lose.

Definitely want delpo to win the bronze now.

A guy playing in a final in England on Sunday pulled out of a tournament across the Atlantic Ocean that starts on Monday? Must be his fitness. There is no other possible explanation...

It was definitely a good match to watch, between two players who gave everything to be in the final, very emotional but not the "best game of the year" in tennis terms. In fact, I don't believe it's possible to have a match very well played in marathons like this, because of course players become tired and the quality of tennis is afected.

Although it was Federer who get it, I'm more suprised by the match presented by Delpo, because I believed that he couldn't put much fight today in front of a player who beat him 5 times this year. It was a good surprise and I would like to see this Delpo more times in the future, because he has the power to make things very hard to any opponent.

About Federer, it was a big accomplish and he's certainly very proud to get a medal for Switzerland, one of the few things that he didn't achieve until today (in singles). But in my opinion Fed's exhibition was far from the best he can make, and I don't know if he can beat Djokovic or Murray on Sunday. It was not easy for him a few weeks ago in Wimbledon, and now I dont see the same consistence in his tennis.

Good to see you changed your mind a bit about Delpo :)

But how exactly is he going to be stopped from winning titles over 500 for the rest of his career? He is by a huge distance the best player in the world under 25 years of age and he's just 23. Are you predicting a career-ending injury for him or some new tennis juggernaut to emerge and sweep everything? Or the current top 3 to last forever?

I like Federer but I am sorry this was not good tennis from my POV. As a club level player, I know to be atleast a bit agressive when I have 3 breakpoints.
Didn't see any sort of aggression from Fed today. I also don't understand why his FH keeps breaking down ?? Bad footwork, nervousness could be the only explanations.
Delpotro was a bit unlucky this time around (unlike the US'09) but atleast he was going for it. I doubt this type of passive tennis will work against Djokovic in the Finals, if that happens.

BTW, on a personal note - Go Roger !!

Great match but unfortunate for Del Potro...he was definitely playing better for most of the match. Federer just seems to win every close match at the big events when he's not facing Nadal or Djokovic  :o I'm hoping Del Potro can win the bronze...

and for all those doubting Del Potro and whining about Ferrer losing the last 2 days, I'll say again-no way would Ferrer have been this competitive on grass against Federer.

Its because recently he focus alot harder on backhand during trannings thinking that his fh is good enough but backhand need much more consistency because everyone force it :)

You can notice that from he UE on fh which was never issue in the past, but i can't judge him, as long as results are great :)

The main reason imho.

Epic match. Both men are massive warriors.

Good thing Fed doesn't have the same mental weakness and disrespect for his opponent as some of his so called "fans" do, or else he'd have lost in straights.

Fair enough but he needs to work on making his main weapon (FH) more consistent. Didn't he comment on working on his strengths.
I know the age is a factor but I feel it is more mental then physical. He doesn't have the same confidence that he used to have in the 04 - 07 timeframe.

He has nothing much more to prove. I would expect him to play more freely.

Federer needs to raise his level against the winner of the Djokovic/Murray match. His serve bailed him out but it probably won't cut it against his opponent in the finals.

Del Potro would have deserved to win this match imo. He was solid, and played a better match overall than Fed. Too bad Fed was better on the big points... sigh. IMO, Delpo deserves a medal for fighting so hard. I wish he would have won at least silver, but bronze is better than nothing. 4th place after fighting so hard would just be devastating for this warrior.

I would disagree, I would say Delpo was better for the 1st set and much of the second. Roger was constantly sapping Delpo's belief the further the match went on.

They 50/50 all the way. Toe to toe.

What a wonderful match this was :) Both men fought like lions and it's a real shame there had to be a loser today. Watching Potro walk off the court crying was just so sad

Fed will need to play better in the final if he wants to win, I'm watching Murray v Nole right now and the level seems to be extremely high between those 2. Fed better pick it up.

Thats why u are always a club level while they are playing on center court at Wimbledon

Del po is playing big, so Fed slice and wait errors, higher percentage simple as that. THe longer the match the percentage kicks in. It only look bad for Fed because its 3 set match and Delpo was on hot streak hitting lines.

When Fed plays Djoko/murray will aggressive of course, coz their defense is better.

Am I right in saying Federer is now the only man in tennis history to have made the final at every "major" (not major as in grand slam but like above 500 level) tournament? All of the 9 Masters, Masters Cup, obviously all the Grand Slams, and now the Olympics? If correct, that's an incredible feat. :worship:

This is one of those statistics that is both true and misleading. The masters series did not exist before 1990, and there was no Olympic Tennis until 1988 (it was discontinued in the 1920s I think....)

So while this does not detract from what Feds has done, which is incredible, but to hail him as the *ONLY* man to do it is facetious since the greats of the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s *couldn't* have done it even if they had the ability.

Federer withdraws from Toronto
Ticker - Friday, August 3, 2012
World No. 1 Roger Federer has withdrawn from the Rogers Cup in Toronto, Tennis Canada announced. Federer, who edged Juan Martin del Potro in a four-hour, 26-minute semifinal today to reach the Olympic final, joined a slew of other withdrawals for next week’s event, including Spaniards Rafael Nadal, David Ferrer, Nicolas Almagro and Fernando Verdasco, France’s Gael Monfils and Swiss Stan Wawrinka. Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, who squared off in today's second Olympic semifinal, are the top two seeds in Toronto.

Both of em played a fantastic match,Federer was way too passive during crucial points but his serve bailed him out.Del Potro just ran outta steam towards the end but still up a brave fight.Fed needs to up his game against Murray/Nole.

Whoa ! - Sneak attach. I would like to see your racquet do the talking any day instead of this passive aggressive behavior.

We are all familiar with percentage tennis - thanks for explaining to all of us. You could argue what is the right course of action when you are up 3 breakpoints but this type of percentage tennis is what hurt Fed @ USOPen Semi'10, 11 against Djokovic.

I am a big time Federer admirer so my criticism of him is my high set of expectations for him. Being a blind fed fan and justifying anything he does is just plain stupid.
It is also called ex-post rationalization.
