Bagels eaten in their prime by the great players...

I was thinking about Federer, considering his prime years starting in 2003 and still going...
I think the only bagel was the one in that famous RG 2008 final against Rafa. Any other?

How about other great players, not necessarily still playing the game?

because of his great serve and even better ability to back it up, guess one shouldnt be surprised he is hard to bagel. Still thats a very nice stat in his career. :yeah:

Mono varies in severity among different people

Just because Fed played with mono and was still able to play some good tennis, doesn't mean it was as serious as Soderling's right now :o

Take a look at Haas and Roddick, they had mono too, but not as severe. Fed's mono was probably only marginally worse than theirs.

Federer respects the game too much to tank sets or matches or to withdraw from matches. Nadal on the other hand will tank a set 0-6 vs Lukas Lacko and bounce back to win the decider. Then his fans will say "But Rafito only lost that set 0-6 because he had a stuffy nose" and will make excuses for future losses.

Sampras was bagelled by Hewitt in the Master Cup 2000 in indoor, Hewitt was able to read Sampras's better than any player in the history.

Ha was bagelled by Kafelnikov in the 1996 FO semi and by Cherkasov in 1992, so 3 bagels after his USO final in 1990 ( i don't remember before but he was too young, it doesn't count), unless i made a mistake.

Nadal is often bagelled because:

Because it was a tactic which Djokovic liked, tank completely a set to disturb the rythm of his opponent and suddenly raise his game to win the third set.

And you would know that how exactly. Fed hides his injuries more than any other player. He doesn't like to talk about it. If you can't see that Fed was way below par in 2008 then sorry but you are just a moron. You don't just suddenly go from winning 3 slams, the WTF, and several other events to winning 1 slam, no WTF and less smaller events. I already mentioned that all their other RG meeting were much closer as well. If you don't get it now there is no help for you.

Djokovic, Ferrero and Safin are the only Slam champions of the past decade who never got bagelled by Federer.

Of course anyone could see he was affected by mono but not every mono is the same and not everyone reacts the same way. Sod mono is much worse than the one Fed got, thats for sure.

I never disagreed with that. But Fed had a pretty tough case of mono himself. For anyone who knows him it was blatantly obvious that he wasn't the same player. It got better as the year went by but the damage had already been done. He lost confidence because of mono early on and then of course Vulturedull cashed in on it

Now that is a GOAT!

BTW agree, loss of confidence caused by mono was worse than mono itself.

People don't seem to understand that. The mono itself is only half of it. The loss of confidence due to lost matches is the other half. It takes time to recover physically as well as mentally.

Quite a stat I think. Weak era or not, Nole and Rafa have eaten more bagels. It also shows you how strong Federer's service games are, to at least get 1 game even in struggling sets for him. I mean I thought Sampras and Becker would have less.

His serve is what makes him almost impossible to be bageled.

Bagelling Nadal is like the village bicycle, everyones had a ride!

Was sounding dirty until you said bicycle :o

At least Nadal's bagels are generally genuine. Murray eats tank bagels in matches he wins:

Canada v Wawrinka 2008 6-2 0-6 6-4 (made semi-finals)
Roland Garros v Baghdatis 2010 6-2 6-3 0-6 6-2
Canada v Monfils 2010 6-2 0-6 6-3 (won tournament)

Tokyo final was a extra tasty bagel for Nadal last year, a bagel with only 4 sprinkles for Nadal (he won 4 points )

BTW, The chef who prepared that very tasty bagel before cramming it down Rafa's throat was Andy Murray.

Del Potro got double bageled by Federer in Australia in 2009 months before beating the same Federer for the US Open title.

For the open era it has to be Connors with 192 bagels in the matches listed by ATP, Lendl with 148 (just matches listed by ATP), Borg with 134 (incredible performance in just 768 matches = 1 bagel in less than 6 matches, only matches listed by ATP + all his DC matches), Agassi 116 If I didnt make mistake. For instance Federer has served 76 bagels so far... Hope this numbers are correct.
Edit: Sampras served only 37 bagels.

Great stats, thanks for the info!

No surprise really that the great returners serve more bagels than the great servers. If you are Sampras, returning on 5-0, how hard will you push for another break? You're going to win the set next game anyway.
