Roger hung in there and fended off an opponent who was getting hotter and hotter, its a good win to get under the belt.

Great fight from Falla. Fed was clearly nervous throughout the match, and wasted shitloads of opportunities in the 2nd set, but Falla gritted his way through to steal it. From mid-way through the 3rd set, tennis was at an incredibly high level from both. Fed had to bring some of his best to finally end the match, and boy was there some great stuff. An entertaining match overall.

Falla redirects pace really well. Every time Fed went toe to toe with falla with topspin backshands, he struggled. Every time Fed varied his pace and used the low slice to bring Falla forward and make his own pace, Fed won.

On the deuce court, Falla was repeatedly serving down the T. Very surprising that Fed did not pick it up until the very end.

henke007
07-28-2012, 04:12 PM
You gotta give cred to Falla to not make a UE like on the last MP on those two 0-40.s in the 2nd overachieving goatness. How Roger lost his serve twice is a blackout for me. Thankfully he could play great again in the third and not think to much about the wasted bp.s. Unreal though how the mental aspect comes in and haunt like this.

this match also proved 2010 wasn't a fluke, for some reason Falla is able to read Federer's serve and most of his patterns from the baseline really well, and he's able to bother Roger with his patterns of play himself

Don't worry, there will be time when Federer is in great shape, and Nadal is not like now, and lets hope that in that kind of situations, Nadal will manage to stay into the tour to face off Federer in 2x better form then him like it is now, then you will see what destroying is.

You can count Nadal as lucky, because every time Federer is dominating and in good shape he is injured  otherwise now H2H will be at least 5 matches + won for Federer.

Tennis is unpredictable. Before that match in Wimbledon 2 years ago, Federer beat Falla at the Roland Garros 7-6 6-2 6-4 and 2 weeks later ON GRASS in Halle Federer also won in straight sets 6-1 6-2. And now he was up 6-3 5-3 40-0 so he could've won very easily today too

Yes, but it's not something he was always able to do. Their meetings before W 2010 does not suggest anything of the kind.

I mean except enormous choke Fed played well but often Falla was going toe to toe with Fed and overcoming him. If Falla is capable to play like this more often he would be much higher on the rankings

That's fine, but there's a general tendency not to give any credit to Federer's opponents, as if Federer chooses to 'gift' every point he loses, like some kind of benevolent deity. On top of that, not converting several game or break points, is somehow always a choke on MTF, no-matter what the opponent did. Falla hit some smart serves = Federer choked.

Hm, I think sometimes I may "do" that just to make fun of some others but people take it again too seriously. I was surprised how well Falla played and most of the time when I rant at opponents is because they're playing really, really well. For example, Falla was at 90% first serve at one point in set 2 or something. Ridiculous.

This quote from Roger could explain why he's never done well at the Olympics...

“When I play for Switzerland I try to be a good ambassador as I travel around for eight months of the year. But it's different having the Swiss cross on your jersey and you do feel the pressure. It's not something that we're used to; everybody's talking about it on the street in Switzerland. It only comes every four years so it's unusual and I feel that too.”

http://www.atpworldtour.com/News/Tennis/2012/07/31/London-Olympics-Saturday-Federer-Edges-Falla.aspx

Nole is the complete opposite. Playing for Serbia inspires him. Pressure doesn't come into the equation.

...people who play tennis will agree with me; Feds opponents (99% of them) just play above average when facing the GOAT...It's like when i play a superior player and am amazed how actually lifted my game...so yeah even when the score is onesided they tend to play really well...that's how much they respect him..and that's what Feds tennis makes you do - admire and play better bcs it's tennis not moonballing, waiting for death in denver or ballbashing...

I guess it depends how much better they are then you. If its close, then sure, if a player is way better, then I disagree.

Is Falla close to as good as Federer? I don't think so, but that's just me.

Alejo produces his best tennis against top players, but then struggles to string together wins against mediocre players

Err...leaving aside the fascinating debate here on the difference between a fan and a "'tard" and other interesting posts on "trolling" or "failing", this was an interesting match.

Federer played well in patches, seemed like his backhand was clicking ( a la last few rounds at Wimbledon this year) before it started to desert him at the close of the second set. I thought Falla played well, returned Federer's first serve well to cause problems. His backhand looked strong.

Is it a sign Federer will find the Olympics a bridge too far, or is he just easing his way into the tournament?

I don't know what's worse - when Fed clowns around and causes me to call the hospital or when other "true" Fed fans start giving out lessons on how to be a real fan and "behave".

If you don't want to see what other people feel in real time, you can always avoid the live comm thread .

People like to get on their high horses. It makes them feel better or superior or some shit like that.

On topic, Falla played well. Fed was nervous as shit in the tail end of that 2nd set. This is a very good win.

Roger was playing plenty well towards the end of the 2nd set. He just lost concentration and let Falla back in which made him even more nervous. Coupled with an opponent on fire who has pushed him here before, no surprise it was tight. It was a lot better than some of his Wimbledon matches, that's for sure. His serve was also OK apart from the end of set 2.

Ties Roscoe Tanner for 4th all time in total match wins on Grass. Roger has climbed from 10th all the way up to 4th.

Also, just one shy of Fena for most match wins at the olympic games.

Total match wins on Grass:

Connors 168
McEnroe 119
Becker 116
Federer 113
Tanner 113
Mazur 112
Hewitt 109
Dent 108
Edmondson 105
Cash 104

Great match!! Both players played really well and produced some awesome winners. Federer should have won it 6-3 6-3, but I guess it is a good thing that he got tested early. He will play Benneteau next.

I enjoyed the match! Although there was that period at the end of the second set where Federer's play went down a little. But Falla played well there too.

Events like the reversal in the second set continue to plague Federer. I think Roger relaxes once he gets in a strong winning position an then loses his edge. Then when things turn against him he freaks out and has trouble competing. Remember when Roger lost to Tsonga in Canada when he had a 5-1 lead. Come on Maestro, keep the fear of losing even if you are up 6-0, 5-0.

Pretty tough for Fed today. You can't win them all easily, sometimes the game just isn't all there.

Anyone notice how loopy Fed's shots were?
He used a lot of clearance on many shots today with plenty of topspin.

Exactly, I also watched Serena's match and she wasn't playing her A game either, both are 30, it isn't as easy to compete at a high calibre level all the time, JJ is a push over for most so Serena had the easy match (and had the advantage of having Michele Obama in her box) and Falla's given Fed fits before so good win by both champions.
