Nastase pulled one of the most deplorable acts in professional tennis when he used that spaghetti strung racket to end Vilas' winning streak in 1977. Vilas was always a class act, Nastase often was not.

By the way, officially is it true that Vilas never made it to number one ranking? Some guy has recently reevaluated the rankings from either 1977 or 1978 and claims he should have been ranked #1 ahead of Borg. If he really has never achieved the number one ranking, he is likely the best player ever not to have achieved that feat, with 900+ lifetime wins.

Hahahaha, people naming Tomic just started watching the sport this year.

Agassi in the early days was brilliant. Safin when he caught a serve against Stafford. He was fined for it.

Ivanisevic and Kafelnikov didn't mind a good tank. At Prague they tanked so badly, that the tournament director refused to give them their appearance fee.

Gaudio had some classic tanks.

Is it a good strategy to tank a set to save energy for the rest of the match? Nastase used to do this a lot. He had many 0-6 sets and still ended up winning the match.

Serena Williams beats Nastase by miles.

Agassi was King of tanks, Pacho Gonzalez used to tank loads to make 1v1 tours look competitive in the 50s, he was so much better than everyone else. Don Budge had a GOAT tank in 1941 US pro, lost in straights after his wedding, wanted to go on a honeymoon lol

The question was "who of the current players", and none of those you named are current ;)

Federer! Between say 2006 and 2010 every match he lost before the semis appeared to be a tank.

It's common knowledge that before his decline, Fed stopped caring about small tournaments and simply showed up to most events as a formality.

Is it really hard to read the title.

In his bio, Agassi explained how he tanked against Chang in semis 1996 AO, he was in an awfull mood since 1995 USO and Becker was already in the final when the match started, he said a loss to Becker, a man he hated, would be too much for him at this moment. The weirdest thing is the fact Agassi explained very well how do you tank a match without made anyone suspicious.

Agassi was very special and emotionnal, because if you consider the facts, this slam was easily winnable for him considering how much he owned Becker (with the exception of Wimbledon), he was able to read his serve better than everybody else because he realized that the tongue of Becker showed the direction of the ball when Becker was serving.

yup. Vilas wants the ATP to recount and recognise him as a Nº1 but they don't want to

Title is what counts. Nastase isn't current and it says all time.

It's not your title  Anyway, out of current ones Tomic is in the lead for now I think, Tipsy would've been #1 otherwise, but decided to grow up in the meantime :)

Tilden would routinely tank the first set or 2 in his matches in order for the crowd to get their money's worth.
