The organizers of Gstaad have officially requested the ATP to shift the tournament to the week before Wimbledon and to have a grass surface!

Gstaad already has higher serve hold figures than almost all hard court events - this would probably be the fastest event on the tour if it switched to grass.

Not sure how they'd try tame it. The rules allow for a larger category of ball (type3), but none are certified for use atm.

The article doesn't say the week before Wimbledon but "probably the second week between the two slams" (don't know if it's just a guess from the journalist or what), which wouldn't be the final week before Wimbledon as there will be 3 weeks between Roland-Garros and Wimbledon in 2010.

The article also says that Gstaad was the first tournament to apply and "they are supported by the Wimbledon organizers".

Beauty. More grass tournaments would be great. Gstaad will definitely be the tournament with the highest % of service holds, you'd have to imagine.

Would changing put some players off considering it would be a different ball than Wimbledon, or would changing the ball make the conditions more similar to SW19. Will be interesting to see where this issue goes.

They could counterbalance the altitude pretty much exactly by increasing the ball's radius by 6%.

Would the players be wary of this perhaps? Cause issues visually with picking up a larger ball? Dunno. Wouldn't for me, but I'm not a pro.

There's absolutely minimal difference between all the tour balls atm, they're basically all the same radius, less than 1% or so from the average (a third of a millimetre!). 6% larger would be quite a change.
