I thought Kei was losing today after watching his match against Berankis, which is surely a top candidate for mugfest of the year, but didn't think he'd lose this badly

Oh well, at least he got two more matches under his belt here, hope he can be in form by the time Toronto and Cincy come around.

absolutely pathetic..no one of any quality should be losing to this rediculous, boring, weapoinless clown like this.

easily kei's worst loss of the year

kei will really be in for a plummit in the ranks after the US open if he doesnt pick things up

..god..soeda is nearly in the top 50 with this win..

Beatdown city. Only time Kei played aggressively was Match point #2 lol. Totally outplayed.

Did you watch his match vs Berankis? If you did, you'd probably be mentally prepared to see him lose today (albeit probably not this badly).

That one was a candidate for worst match of the year, a mugfest of unparalled proportions. My eyes are still sore from watching that match. Kei won that one because Berankis is an unforced error machine of Golubevian proportions. Soeda has no weapons but is consistent enough to beat Kei in this form.

Kei will hopefully be in form for Toronto and Cincy.

show some goddamn respect. This guy has turned himself into a very solid player. Has had a great week. Beatdown Kunitsyn after outlasting Malisse. Go dosen't beat himself. And when the other guy has an atrocious day this is what happens. Soeda dosen't give gifts. Plus he hit a decent amount of winners today.

Very nice match from Soeda who always looked like he had a gameplan and knew how to beat Nishikori. I've never been a fan of Soeda but he impressed me today. Nishikori just looked clueless and had no plan B. He's a good enough player but I always think he's a bit overrated.

There wasn't a lot of eye-contact at the handshake. Do these guys not get on?

It's always awkward when a country's #1 player idol gets beatdown by the distant #2.

Credit to Soeda for a good win, I had assumed he was around the same age as Nishikori - didn't realise he was 27!

I hope Soeda's agent is currently on the phone to Sony, Uniqlo, EA Sports, Weider, Cup Noodle, Wilson, Adidas and Tag Heuer trying to get a piece of the action.

and some signed photos of kei probably

seriously though, soeda would probably make a lot more money if nishikori didn't exist.

I guess he's very close to passing matsuoka's old japanese record of career-high 45

Kei's head was just not in the match today, awful! Credit to Soeda though, he's been quite consistent as of late. He can be Top 40 next week.

This is probably the best match and certainly biggest win of Soeda's career, given how big the spotlight in Japan must have been on this.

That said, Kei did not play well at all this week. Worrisome.

They are good pals and always hanging out together, with Tatsuma Ito, too.

I'm actually not too surprised Kei lost to Soeda coz I heared Soeda beat Kei many times in practice matches. But I thought it would be different in a real match and I'm surprised with the scoreline!

Soeda has been in the best form of his career lately, while Kei is struggling with his form since he came back from the abdominal injury. Soeda has a very solid defence, hits flat and his serve is reliable. He's very tenacious too. When he's on song he can be very tough to beat, like when he took a set off Del Potro at Wimbledon.
Kei is a more attacking player but it seems he just imploded today. :o
Hope he'll get back some form before the Olympics.

Also big credit to David Sanguinetti for coaching Soeda. Go improved a lot under his guidance. He will break into top 50 next week!
