Predict the tournament and beaten FINALIST where Roger Federer will win his 78th ATP Singles tour title and pass John McEnroe to take over 3rd place in the Open Era behind Jimmy Connors (109) and Ivan Lendl (94).

Wimbledon 2012 was Mr. Federer's 75th career title and 5th in 2012.

Federer's current schedule (keep in mind, he is allowed to skip 2 masters without penalty):

1. 07/27/2012 - 08/05/2012 - Olympic Games 2012 at Wimbledon (Gold medal).

2. 08/06/2012 - 08/12/2012 - Rogers Cup (Toronto) Masters 1000

3. 08/13/2012 - 08/19/2012 - Western & Southern Open (Cincinnati) Masters 1000

4. 08/27/2012 - 09/09/2012 - US Open

5. 10/08/2012 - 10/14/2012 - Shanghai Rolex Masters 1000

6. 10/22/2012 - 10/28/2012 - Swiss Indoors (Basel) ATP 500

8. 11/05/2012 - 11/12/2012 - Barclays ATP World Tour Finals

The contest will close for guesses before Federer's first Olympic match.
First correct guess wins a vcash credit prize and honorary prognosticator certificate of achievement.

P.S. If he doesn't win his 78th in 2012... I'll edit this post. and we'll start over :)

Given his probable huge confidence boost from winning Wimbledon and taking #1, I'd have to rank that as a good possibility even if one is not a fan, especially if things align for him nicely (draws, conditions, etc.). If not, then perhaps Basel.

You guys are amazing :D

You really think Fed will win 8 or even MORE titles in 2012 ?

Fed titles in last years :
2007 - 8
2008 - 4
2009 - 4
2010 - 5
2011 - 4
2012 - 5 so far.

It is not reasonable to believe Fed is as good as he was in 2007 .Talking about overreaction to his lucky Wimby run...this is wayy over the top now . He is almost 31, not 26.

LOL. Wake up and smell the coffee cardio. He's just won Wimbledon and made it to #1 in the world and is in the most favorable part of the year for him. One does not get to #1 without winning and reaching deep into a significant amount of significant titles over a 52 week period. Is it more reasonable to think that in his current form and level he will suddenly stop winning titles with grass Olympics, faster hard court and indoor hard approaching, or win 3 more?

He's won 8 titles since November last year. Have you ever heard of the resurgent ability of great players, even at 30 and older? Or did tennis history only start in the last 6 years? Given his excellent start to the year, I would have to say there is at least a reasonable chance that he can win 3 more the rest of the year, perhaps more. Maybe he won't. No one knows for sure.

Of course if you feel he will suddenly stop winning for the rest of the year, you're entitled to your opinion... but that's certainly not the point of this thread.

Federer is in his best form since 2007, no doubt. In 2007 he didn't have Nole 1.5 to deal with nor Ivan Murray. But I still don't think he is playing as well as 2007, I think he has 1/2 at best in him, he has played alot this season, it might start catching up. I expect him to relaxerer from USO to Basel and maybe even tank Paris for the WTF.

Each year is a bit different, Sir Tim. I see no indications that he is falling off at this point, unless you are privy to information that I am not. :) Let's see what happens. Anyway this is still off topic for this thread.

I'll start a different thread asking if it is reasonable to think Federer can win 3 more titles this year and include a standard MTF poll. And then people can discuss in that thread. :)

Well, lets see how are things in the end of the year. If Fed really gets his 8 or more titles this year, I admit I was wrong and he is superhuman, maybe even alien .

But I dont think I am wrong. My guess is he wins 1 more this year, indoors, probably Basel.

8 or more would be crazy amount for 31 y.o. , he already did better than expected with slam and 2 Masters, how much do you want from old man ?? Even if he stays at 5, 2012 would be great year for him.

8 or more would seem unreasonable if he was starting in January with 0 titles. But he's not, he has 5. What is more about 40 percent of the year is left with very favourable tournaments for him including basel, paris, and WTF which he won last year. In addition there are the Olympics at Wimbledon this year, and lets not forget Cincy and U.S. open where he always does well.

Ok, so far it looks like the World Tour Finals has the most votes with Murray as the leading finalist, followed by Basel with Wawrinka, and then the US Open with almost all Djokovic votes as the finalist.

I'm exempt of course. I tend to lean with Basel and Murray.
But I think the most entertaining passing of McEnroe's title number would be at the US Open.
