Paire had 0-40 to break at 5-5 in the second.

Paire was the best player for the whole match, but the break point conversion was atrociuos. 2/3 for Gulbis, 2/17 for Benoit.
Really lucky Gulbis with netcords and half-lines though.

These guys are very similar players, really. I like Paire, he is super talented, but he also suffers from the same mental implosions that Gulbis does. If anyone can't take advantage of Ernests's lapses in concentration, it's Benoit. As for Ernests, he really needs to work on consolidating after he breaks serve. Was down 0-40 multiple times, and the fact that he was still able to hold in those games was not a good look for Benoit.
Gulbis served pretty well, though - that was key for him.

I didn't have a good impression about Gulbis-Verdasco last week, and the score gives the same impression : saving breakpoints, 6 less points than your opponent, great serving.

Last week, the first service games against Verdasco were all the same : deuce easy-error, ad-Verdasco ace or great serve, etc ...

I expected better from Gulbis after his match against Berdych in Wimbledon, I don't think he will go far if he plays like that. It can win a match but not many ones.

He's a guy who can find humor in any situation so he was able to joke about it later but, well, he thought it was unfair since he didn't know the girls he was with were prostitutes. He paid a fine and was let out in time for his match the next day but he lost it, of course, and then he swore never to come back to Sweden. That happened several years back.

Reckon we might actually be seeing another "Gulbis" in the Frenchman - supremely talented but mindless when it comes to rally construction and keeping his cool. He's got time to fix those obvious failings but they are nasty habits to get into.

Yeah, I'm following a similar line of thought.

Umag was very, very hot when he played Verdasco though - I think he'd basically just decided he couldn't cope physically, and he had to swing for a winner every shot.

Gstaad he's showed decent fight at least, if more than a bit wayward. Could easily have lost to Volandri if his attitude was worse, and even more so today.

As crazy as it sounds, Gulbis was the one with the better gameplan today although even then, he didn't have much of one. Paire didn't seem to know what he was doing.
