Atlanta R1: Soeda def. Malisse 4-6, 7-5, 6-4

The player with the stronger mental makeup prevailed in this matchup. Xavier was sleepwalking through this match, tried really hard to break Go and win the match in straights at 4-5, but was unsuccessful and then was broken afterwards. He smashed the racket in half over his leg which I thought would get him going, but he just was pissy the rest of the match. He was called for foot faults, time violations, and he bitched to the umpire on every single one of them. For a good part of two sets, he was taking about 40 seconds in between service points, and then he went into "screw this" mode and rushed the rest of the match. He even argued with the umpire multiple times about the challenge system replay ripping him off.

Go was solid, just waiting for Malisse to implode and he did. He's like a poor man's simon, just trying to keep the ball in play and waiting for his opponent to screw up. It's not guaranteed but he should pass through Igor as well.

It is nice seeing Go seeded for an ATP event. I hope he can live up to his 8th seeding by defeating Kunitsyn next round.

Hey Soeda, Go Soeda, soul Soeda, flow Soeda
Hey Soeda, Go Soeda, soul Soeda, Go Soeda.

Expected meltdown. It's just too common these days for X-Mug.

Shit I hate to see Malisse act like this.. credit to Go there for staying solid and just keeping up with Malisse until he fell apart mentally.

Xavier should really start winning these kind of matches if he wants to make one more appearance in top 50.

Awful, awful loss. Looked set to win this easily in two, then the usual concentration lapses crept in. The umpire gave him a warning for timewasting during a deuce game at 3-3 in the second set and it was basically downhill from there. He was still arguing with the umpire even during his service motion! Eventually took that game with two angry second serve aces though. Got to 5-4 in the second and was two points from the match at 0-30 on Soeda's serve. Lost that game on a lucky net cord from Soeda, and then Soeda gets another lucky net cord at 30-30 in the next game and duly breaks serve, Malisse breaks racquet, you can guess what happened from there.
No Baker-Malisse second round match. :(

Soeda's getting better and better. Won a couple of challengers, a match at World Team Tennis, a grass court match, at Wimbledon demolished Kunitsyn and took a set off Delpo.

Some of Malisse's comments at the end of the 2nd set were hilarious. "He's five foot nothing, pushing everything. Fucking hateful".

Was broken pretty much straight after that.

It wasn't exactly muttered to himself, he was pretty damn loud about it. Soeda probably heard it too.

He's a good player. Everyone gets on him for getting points in Asian challengers, but he routs people in those events. He never has a bad loss and is getting better and better vs the top guys.
