Well, Andy beat Mahut tonight :yeah:

All reports are that he's looking like that Roddick we all know and love...ya know, the sometimes fit guy that plays midly passive tennis.

Hopes are high that he'll lose to Isner in the semi-final after playing defensive "scat-man" style points on every break opportunity.

I kid. Good to see him winning again, the bar is obviously set low but if he can win another title here and beat some top 20(almost 10ish) type players I think we'll see his confidence(and rankings) rise a bit...for the Olympics Summer hardcourt season and US OPEN.

At least he won a couple of matches. I don't think he can handle Isner now, but things are a lot better than about a month ago.

GREAT Win for Andy. He should've won in 2 sets but good for his composure and fitness to win in 3 esp after getting screwed with a footfault. Nice to see him look like the fitter person. Great :yeah:

Andy grinds his way into another final. :banana:Sorry I couldn't rep you back...I'd have to spread it around first, and ehll (sic), I ain't around here enough to spread anything around.

Doing well, had the rare opportunity to catch some LIVE tennis with two of my favs. I grew up in Greensboro, but went to an arch-rival HS from Big John. Still, gotta root for him when I can. Am super-psyched he and Andy will play together in London.

Bottomline, though, I'm glad Andy won. He served sooooooo well. Now if we could just find that FH.

I'm good, girls are good...just bigger. Nat will be in 1st Grade (did I really type that?!?) and Sam only has one more year in pre-school. And then I'll get my Life back. :p Still, all is well here in Virginny...just hot and humidity as Hotlanta. We've already had something like 15 95F+ days already this summer. And it ain't even August yet. Sigh.

Hope all are well in here.

Who knows? He served 138 last night. Today when the trainer came out he said he started to feel it a little last night. Hopefully it's just some kind of soreness/tiredness/strain and nothing worse. I would hope with the summer he has ahead that he wouldn't have risked something bad today by continuing :o

I agree. It's all about the USO but unfortunately he can't win it unless he wins matches and get confidence which means playing a bunch.

Pre-match they asked him how he felt and he said "...well, (pause)...it's one match so (pause)...so you know...(pause)...I can get through it." or something like that. So I knew he wasn't 100%

Top 20 is good....hopefully he can pickup points at Canada or Cincy.

I'm happy but kind of sad also. Andy proved, once again, that if he is healthy, he can play. The thing is, once he gets more play, his body can't handle it. He can't play himself into form.
I really hope it is nothing serious with the shoulder and Roddick can play 100% at the Olympics.

Haven't added my  contribution to this thread yet :)

I mixed up the starting time of the match, and, when I wanted to start watching Andy was losing 1:6, 1:0. So, I didn't see anything from the medical time-out and didn't even know that there might be something wrong with him. But I felt that he can turn around this match as losing a random set to a player of Muller's level (no disrespect meant) doesn't mean anything. So happy for another title :aparty:

Really looking forward to Olympics :yeah: Best of luck, Andy!

How was Andy's shoulder?

Deboogle!.
07-28-2012, 06:49 PM
He served fine, several aces etc. Hard to tell for sure, but I feel pretty confident saying his shoulder was not a factor. It was his play at net that was a much bigger problem. And I think the fact that they had simply never played together before. And they were playing against doubles specialists.

I couldn't watch Roddick-Djokovic yesterday, but watched it today on a full tape. From what I saw, Andy was not THAT bad. He tried to hit the ball, to take it to the Djoker. Just everything Nole touched, it tourned into gold. The sad thing is, a lot of top players seem to have their best days against Andy lately. I just hope this match does not smack his confidence much.

What surprises me is that his serve seems to be the problem more and more often. I don't know why his best shot seem breaks down, maybe because overuse through the years...I don't know.

I wander if Andy can make a run in Canada (if he plays). A lot of the top guys will be tired from the Olympics.

08-05-2012, 12:17 AM
Thanks guys, I had an amazing time despite the result.

Infact it was UNREAL. Because guess what, Wimbledon was so dead you could just wander round the practice courts (courts 5,6,7 etc.) and there was no crowd. So I literally arrive, and ten minutes later there's Andy with a couple of people around him trying to get pictures, he's on his own and keeps asking the staff how to get to court 7  he kept apologising to people wanting autographs saying he had to practice. So, I went to court 7 to watch him practice, his partner didn't turn up till 10 minutes later, then about 5 minutes later it starting raining!

Andy wasn't happy because his was the first court to be covered and was moaning to the groundstaff asking them if they wanted him to practice in the middle of the road blah blah. So I thought there goes my chance of getting an autograph, he was in a terrible mood. Anyway, some little kid came up and begged for him to sign his cap and he agreed and i shot in behind him and managed to get my program signed, he only signed for two people. Haha, I was so giddy, i've wanted to see Andy live for ten years, never thought it would happen before he retired. More than I could have ever asked for.

Anyway, I will post some pics tomorrow for you :)

So disappointed to see that Andy's not in Toronto.

I know that there's been nothing written, but from following Hewitt over the years I always get the feeling that not playing a tournament, having not gone deep the previous week, means that the body isn't up to the challenge of playing a lot of tennis. Of course it's just speculation, but I do fear that Andy is struggling with his shoulder and/or other niggles.

MASON, Ohio (Reuters) - Andy Roddick's U.S. Open preparations took a turn for the worst on Tuesday when he suffered a back injury in a 7-6 6-3 first round defeat by France's Jeremy Chardy at the Cincinnati Open.

Chardy, who took his place in the first round as a 'luck loser', triumphed 7-4 in a first set tie-break but Roddick struggled in the second set during which he had treatment for back spasms.

After receiving attention, Roddick's serve was noticeably slower and he was broken twice by the Frenchman who is ranked 38th in the world.

Tournament wins in Atlanta and Eastbourne had indicated an upturn in form for Roddick but now he has to see whether he will be fit to play at Winston-Salem next week or hold himself back for the Open.

"I don't know yet. You know, we're going to have to figure this thing out. I don't have all the answers for it yet," Roddick said after his loss.

The back injury came when the American went for a low shot, he said.

"I felt fine early on, and then I had one lunge forehand and, we have all had it, your back kind of goes out or spasms a little bit," Roddick explained. "It got progressively worse.

"In a perfect world I'd love to play next week. I feel like I'd benefit from that. That's what we're going to try to do," he said, adding he would evaluate the situation in three days.

Chardy will take on Russia's Denis Istomin in the second round.

OK - Deb, I was wrong. Andy dropped a 141 bomb today and served constantly in 130s...Darren said he thought it was best he'd seen Andy serve in years. I have to agree.

I've always said, I don't really pay attention to how Andy is playing from the ground but if he's serving well his whole game is soo much better. It's a good sign.

Andy joked after the match about the 141 serve says "I hadn't one of those in almost 3 years". LOL.

Tomic will be a much, much tougher test. He'll need to serve well to win that.

To be honest, I had a feeling after the AO this year. Then, I really believed it after he lost at Wimbledon. The way he walked off after his last match and the look on his face. I was actually more surprised when Delray announced that he had signed for next year's tournament. In a way though, I'm not surprised that Andy didn't make a big deal out of this being his last year on tour and only announced it right before a match that he could very likely lose. I can see why he would want to try to keep it as low key as possible, but at the same time let his fans and sponsors know. He tried to do both of those at the same time and that's not easy.

Two things I'm sure we'll see before the end of the year - a book deal and a TV commentary gig, even if its just a limited contract. He might be Davis Cup captain some day, but I don't see him as a full time coach.

Nothing lasts forever, and this day was inevitable, but - damn! - I just cannot imagine, how to follow tennis, when there is no Andy Roddick to root for in the pro tour anymore. It has been smth like 10+ years since I am Andy's fan. My previous favorite player Pete Sampras retired in the best possible way, not everyone is blessed to retire like he did. After Pete retired, Andy quickly became my favorite player, he still is, and I doubt that there will be any player, whom I will support more than Andy. For the last few years I tried to watch his every match, if it was possible, and, if it wasn't possible or didn't have a stream, I was always following livescore. I think I was kinda living with his career a little as well  Sure, Andy's retirement doesn't mean I will follow tennis less or anything like that. Tennis is by far my favorite sport, I love and watch all kind of tennis, also challengers, futures, even lower levels. However, Andy is the player, who is at the very top of my tennis pyramid, and, despite I felt that this retirement is closing in, and probably it is the best thing for him to say goodbye, my heart is really bleeding today  Thus far I couldn't hold the tears only once because of tennis, and it was when Andy lost to Roger 14-16 in W'2009. The moment, when he waves his farewell here in USO, will for sure be the 2nd time.

My biggest tennis regret is that I have never seen Andy live. I have been to ATP tournament only once, in Valencia 2010, and unfortunately Andy had chosen to play Basel that week. I wanted to go to England this year, but couldn't make a room in my schedule, and was hoping that I will get to see him next year for sure :o Well, this is my own fault, but that is not fixable anymore.

So... probably for the final time... Come on, Andy! Will cheer for every single point he wins, when watching TV this night :yeah:

I agree my man. I totally agree.

I saw him play a few times in person once at WTT, a few times at the USO from the nose bleeds. I have a pic with him before he went on to win 2 masters and then the USO in the summer of 03'. He's really the guy that got me started in watching tennis. I was spoiled. I started watching him in 2002 and then after only watching tennis for a year he won the open and I thought it would always be like that. Unfortunately you realize sports are for the most part ultimately very disappointing.

I never recovered as a fan from the 2009 loss, it just taught me to not get my hopes up anymore.

It's just weird for years, I've looked where Andy is when the draws come out for the majors and sort of try to imagine a way he could work his way though and win the thing.

I feel like not having to watch Andy lose anymore will be a burden off my shoulders and I can just watch the tennis now and root for nice matches but I won't have to worry about being emotionally let down all the time after losses.

Yep, me too. If I just had a single wish to change one result in the history of the sport, Wimbledon 2009 final would be my immediate and only choice. I still can't force myself to watch highlights or trophy ceremony from that match, just can't.

Agree with other as well. When any kind of draw was made, I opened it with a first thought - ok, where's Roddick? Aha, here he is. In order to win the tournament he has to... :) Yeah... many years like that already. I think the very first time when I noticed Andy was when he defeated Michael Chang in French Open in 2001. That big serve + big FH combo and explosiveness made me a fan immediately. One month later I picked up a tennis racket for the first time in my life as well. Andy was among the main reasons for that.

Andy was absolutely amazing tonight. Uhh... Andy... why was this FH hibernating since that win over Nadal in Miami 2010. Everything was clicking tonight. Ok, Tomic was poor, but Andy's FH had a good sting, BH was more than solid, slice approaches were deep, net game was sharp, and that serve was great as well. Bitter sweet match for me, but I finally felt that I am watching the vintage Andy, the one, whose fan I became all those years ago :worship: :sobbing:

Hopefully, he is able to produce similar level of play against Fognini  Come on, Andy!

Fuck that. I would just change the rain delay in 2004 and Roddick doesn't change to his stupid style of play wins gets the confidence and competes splitting titles with Federer. That killed him. That was the start of the decline.

Sure sure, he changed his game to become more well rounded but I think it would have happened anyways...09 was a heart breaker 04 was the career breaker.

:) What will we do with ourselves?

Watching both his press conference yesterday and his post-match conference, I can see that Andy is content with his decision to retire. I will miss the highs and lows of watching Andy tennis. My only regret is that I never saw him live.

Hopefully another player will capture my interest. That said, there is something to watching tennis without emotion.

Oh wow. Bought USO tickets a long time ago for Sunday... I'll be seeing Andy/Fognini tomorrow.

Been a huge Andy fan since 2001, obsessed like all you guys, following every win and loss, SO upset after Wimby '09. Can't believe I might possibly be watching his last match in person - total coincidence. But I'm hoping that there's no way he let's Fabio end his career. Not gonna lie, if tomorrow's match is it, I'll prob shed a few tears and totally embarrass myself in front of my friends lol.

So glad we get to watch him for another match. This surely wasn't the best performance, Andy did go to pushing mode from time to time, but who cares, the main thing is that he won. I couldn't care less, if it is pretty or not, I want to see him winning, and that is, what he is doing here so far :)

The great thing is that I have at least two more days of following Andy pro career. Waiting for the next match as always, all the hopes and expectations.. just like all these years :)

Fuck that. I would just change the rain delay in 2004 and Roddick doesn't change to his stupid style of play wins gets the confidence and competes splitting titles with Federer. That killed him. That was the start of the decline.

Well... yes, at that point of time I just thought that - oh, well, he will get plenty of opportunities in the future. I would still change that 2009, that one win would have compensated all the previous misfortunes.

he became obsessed with money. greedy for hollywood you-know-what. he stopped chasing after balls and fighting to get fit in 2004.
he claimed he had a bad match up with federer and only got bad and injured the last year...

it was not mostly bad luck. he just sucked.

Every single word of THIS. So much respect for JMDP, he was pure class after the match. And, also for the people I've met or "met" because of Andy, including Andy himself and many fans here at MTF and at the old RoddickRocks fan site (and also, Mandy Moore). I don't know what to say. If only Andy really knew how many people's lives he influenced by bringing them into the sport & the friends they would thus meet & experiences had, it is more than just playing/watching a game & I have learned that over the better part of the last decade.

I actually got to see Andy play live once & it was because of another great Andy fan: Fee & her graciousness, so thankful for that, for all the great Roddick fans and all the years we've all had here together because of that jerk, Andy.
