Has this always been a 48 player draw? I don't think so. This must be a wise change to compensate for the Olympics.

watch when this becomes masters 250. Fed won't play even if he goes out early at Olympics, semi-finalists also won't play and doubt that these 4 will be Berlocq, Ferrero, Andujar and Troicki . Moronic schedule

What's the punishment for skipping this anyway?

nothing : zero point that's what it's all about mandatory tournaments.

It might be worse (there's theoretically a "suspension penalty" in the rules which has never been applied) as all skipping players send an excuse (Montanes did so last year or previous one, I don't remember, to skip both canada and Cinci open)

Fed doesn't even need to send an excuse as at his age and carreer, the rules allow him to skip 2 MS1000 tournaments in a year (and next year to skip all of them).

Fed having already reached the final two conditions, he's allowed an exemption for 2 MS1000 tournaments this year,

and all MS1000 tournaments next year as he will be 31 years old in january.

Thats not true, i don't know what is your rulebook, but mine is the 2012 ATP Rulebook

1.08 Reduction of ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Commitment
A. A player’s number of ATP World Tour Masters 1000 commitment tournaments shall be reduced by one (1) tournament for reaching each of the following milestones:
1) 600 matches* (as of 1 January of the commitment year);
2) 12 years of service;
3) 31 years of age (as of 1 January of the commitment year).
If all three (3) conditions are met then the player has a complete exemption
from the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 player commitment.
The first Year of Service shall be the first calendar year in which a player has
competed in at least twelve (12) tournaments offering ranking points.
* From 2010 only main draw singles matches played in the following
events will be used in the player’s match count for purposes of this rule.
ATP World Tour
Barclays ATP World Tour Final
Grand Slams
Davis Cup
Olympics
Challenger and Futures matches played prior to 2010 will remain on the player’s
record as relates to this commitment reduction rule.
B. A player who is eligible for a reduction of his ATP World Tour Masters 1000 commitment
tournaments must be in good standing with the ATP in order to receive a reduction
of required ATP World Tour Masters 1000 commitment tournaments.

If that's from the rulebook, then duong is right, no? Or are you thinking it's all or nothing?
The rules say that you can get an exception in 3 various ways and if you get all 3, you can skip all MS1000 tournaments.

it's the same rulebook as mine :)

it means he can skip 2 of them this year ("shall be reduced by one if he meets") as he respects conditions 1 and 2,

but he doesn't respect yet condition 3, which means only next year he can skip all MS1000 tournaments if he wants ... but he would still get zero-pointers for each of them :D

anyway that commitment is mostly about money and about the fact that he can avoid the hypocrisy used by all of the players to send a wrong medical certificate if they just want to skip a tournament, if he wants to respect that money concern.

As far as rankings and what we are interested in on this forum are concerned, it changes nothing.

That is almost the exact opposite of "rightfully" :o

Last time the Olympics were two or three weeks after Toronto; it was a benefit, because it meant that guys like Fed, Nadal and Roddick also played doubles (I remember one of the outer courts being absolutely swamped for a Fed/Wawrinka match).

In 2004 it was a couple of weeks before the games too. It's only hampered this year by the July week start for the Games..

Someone very rightfully pointed out on Twitter that every other Rogers Cup is a much weaker field because of the Olympics. Men's fans in Toronto really get the raw end of this alternating Toronto/Montreal deal.

In 2008 Rogers cup ended two weeks prior to Olympic tennis tournament start, thus it had the usual strong field of a masters (only Nalbandian missing of the top 10).

In 2016 the Olympic games will also start a week later than in 2012, so it is likely that the Canada/Cincinnati masters will again be scheduled before the Olympics, and (at least Canada) will have full field.

I can't believe Roddick pulled out here. With some of the other top guys withdrawing this would of been a golden opportunity to pick up some ranking points and improve his seeding for the US Open. Hopefully its mainly for rest because if he actually had to pull out because of his shoulder then that might a cause for concern.

That's a nice thing imo - other than Bercy, where top4 often screw around, and maybe Shanghai due to scheduling, there really isn't much shot at masters for anyone else.

Also the 360pts for the semi can make a huge ranking difference for lesser guys, even the 180 for qfs.
