11 major titles for Nadal also ties Bjorn Borg.

Simon Reed on his way to the jobcentre as we speak.

Rafa piled on the pressure the way he was meant to. Loved his re-discovery of the emphatic forehand deep into Djokovic's forehand corner, and the sharp equivalent forcing Djoko to take a hand off the backhand. That's the way Rafa needs to take championships from a champion.

Anyway Djokovic is the better player across all other surfaces, so he'll like his chances the rest of the year.

positives for nadal - another GS.

It looked to me like Djokovic went for a little extra on the second serve that he double faulted on to lose the match. If so, that would seem in keeping with his 2.0 mentality in that he has no fear of losing so he doesn't really feel any pressure, and this often pays dividends. The problem is that statistically that has to backfire once in a while.

I expect a ton of people to be extremely angry over the rain delay, citing that Novak may very well have won if the rain had not stopped play.

However, I think we saw a glimpse of early 2011 Nole at the end of yesterday, but just as we have seen glimpses of the invulnerable 2011 Nole, those glimpses are too few and far between. He would have probably won the fourth set yesterday 6-3 or 6-4, but I honestly do not believe he would have been able to keep up his God Mode form for a fifth set. I think both the pressure and the overall reality of what he was trying to do would have gotten him in the end.

Please, let's not make this thread a war between Nole and Rafa fans. I think we can all admit that Rafa was the better player for the first two sets, and Novak was the far better player during the last hour before the rain delay, I was not able to watch the resumption today so I have no idea how events unfolded today other than the fact that Rafa managed to win 6 of the last 9 games.
Let's put this final behind us.
Sure its possible that Novak could have pulled off the impossible yesterday, but there's no way to know because the rain stopped play.
Rather than fighting over who deserved to win and how much we hate Toni Nadal, and how Novak was robbed of history, let's just remember that there are two more majors and the Olympics coming up. This final is not the end of the world and I am quite honestly sick of people stabbing at teach other over two people that they have most likely never even met in their lives. It's a game and one player is not going to win every time.

On that note, congratulations Rafa, and kudos to Nole for sticking with it and putting up the best fight possible.
I praise both players for making this final both exciting and overall fun to follow

really? because he beat Djokovic without needing to play his best, I think it's quite the opposite, if anything he now knows that he can beat Novak even possibly in poor from. Djokovic was not in the greatest form either but obviously it bodes well for the next few grand slams for Nadal, not badly

You can think that. Personally, though, I think that Nadal's reactions yesterday say that this isn't true.

Nadal played at his best for 3 sets he won

no he didn't.... even the commentators, of which were John Mcenroe and others, were stating that he played nowhere as well as he did the rest of the tournament except for in small spurts. Nadal never had to play his best really because Djokovic was way off but anyone with common sense can recognize that Nadal was not playing his best clay court game

Good match.
Quality was up-and-down, but there were a lot of stunning rallies.

Great drama throughout.

Rain delay was ok because they could have stopped earlier but also play longer so on both sides you can argue now.

This is the best rivalry in tennis and after all those Nadal-Federer matches we have to admit now that this is the true rivalry with the most matches and more finals than Federer-Nadal.
And it is not onesided like the other rivalry but always tight and balanced.

Nice to see Rafa is no longer a match for Novak in an uninterrupted best-of-five match. Not even on clay.

FYI, a few words about yesterday's rain delay, since I was in the stands. Yesterday the level of rain was constant since the middle of the second set. The rain delay didn't happen due to a deterioration of weather conditions. RG officials delayed the restart to 8 pm, when it was announced the match would be continued today.

The funny thing? Rain was dying down just before 8 pm and finally stopped just after the announcement.

And to be frank, Nadal's grass results are better than how he actually plays on the surface. Squeaking out matches against legends like Petzschner and Haase to beat his pigeon in the final doesn't make him a great grass court player.

bro the reason that happened is that it takes hours for the damp clay to really start to have a big affect on the ball, the balls were playing without any action, dropping low and Nadal's spin was dissapearing entirely.... Nadal's clay court game revolves around his spin and when that became a problem (non coincidentally 3rd set), Novak ran away with the set because of the conditions. low bouncing with little affects from spin, it's not rocket science. the clay was not playing very clay like in the 3rd set which explains Novaks run of form and Nadal's lack of form. granted who knows what would have happened in the 4th/5th set, BUT it doesn't take a rocket science to recognize that damp conditions on clay can hinder a player

you have to be kidding? if you really don't accept that Nadal is a great grass court player then you are in fact a blind hater. 5 Wimbledon finals is no small task, and you sound totally dumb when you mention Haase and Petzchner and none of the great players Nadal had to beat on grass to achieve what he has

Novak isn't going to lose confidence and a mental toughness because he lost to Nadal at RG. This is the only surface that rewards that brand of pushing.

He lost even earlier at this tournament last year, I should remind you. This was his best ever result and he nearly pushed Nadal to 5 without playing his best tennis for much of the match. It could be argued that's something to take confidence from.

Rain was dying down just before 8 pm and finally stopped just after the announcement.

clay got damper as the hours passed yesterday and that Nadal's clay game revolves around his heavy spin and that it entirely became void after as the day went on.

and it's funny too you mention an uninterrupted 5 set match when in Australia (Novak's best surface), Nadal was points from winning the match. your argument defeats itself, that or Djokovic is never truly in his best form except for a match or two a season :o

Fair point, but you have to question whether Djokovic will ever improve again, let alone attaining his 2011 form ever again. Without it, I really don't think he will stand a chance against Nadal (except hard courts IMO).

06-11-2012, 01:33 PM
bro the reason that happened is that it takes hours for the damp clay to really start to have a big affect on the ball, the balls were playing without any action, dropping low and Nadal's spin was dissapearing entirely....

Pretty easy to see this if you're not blinded by hate.

The final would likely have been a straight set affair without that rain and had it been a nice sunny day, we might have seen an actual demolition.

What exactly is Djokovic's best? He lost three times on Rafa on clay, and came a missed sitter BH by Nadal from likely losing in Australia. So what exactly is Djokovic's "best"? 2012 ain't 2011. 2011 Djokovic and 2011 Nadal are not here. Time to be realistic, assholes.

Djokovic's best is not as easy reproduced as Nadal's, obviously. But Nole doesn't need to be in top form to beat Rafa off clay. Wasn't in great form at AO, outlasted Rafa, which supposedly was impossible. And really, if he can get this close on clay serving so poorly, how is Nadal going to beat him on grass or hard, where Djoker doesn't have to hit 25 shots near the line to win 1 point.

No, the rain caused Djokovic to lose all momentum. Momentum that had seen him win 8 of the previous 9 games before it had to be stopped.

Only a fool would suggest that Rafa wasn't incredibly lucky that it happened when it did.Lucky? No, I think that's definitely too far. He was one break behind. People are acting as if Nole was on course to sweep through and win the match, when Nadal had played his best game in an hour to hold before the stoppage.

Ultimately, Nole didn't show up today and that's what matters. They both had to deal with the same conditions and situation, and it was Nadal who handled it effectively. No more, no less.

The ability to adapt to changes is what makes champions. Rafa couldn't adapt, but luckily for him the rain delay changed things.

Worth remembering at *2-0 in the third he didn't once complain about the surface. Only once Novak upped his game and started to destroy him did it become an issue.

Was embarrassing watching him throwing a strop.

Too many things against Nole going into the tournament. Only thing is early on he bought into the hype of Nadal's form this year and played like an idiot. But glad to see him put the fear back on for a couple of sets there.

Nadal maybe clayGOAT but clay season is rendered extremely boring with his dominance. So glad it is at an end.

What's with the head down when he walked up to shake Rafa's hand and then also head down when he was sitting down?

He lost, ofc he is not going to jump out of joy, but he just gave an interview for the Serbian TV station. He said like 'ok, he was better, he the best on clay (usual bs), I will need a few days to rest and we go on. The 1st beak yesterday went in my favour, the 2nd in his, but i could have lost vs Tsonga, so I'm generally happy with the tournament I had, I coud be going home in QF so no point in looking back now, we go on to Wimbledon.' Needless to say, tennis is not REALLY supposed to be played in the rain. It's understandable that he might be more reluctant to stop at that point but there is no question that those are not "normal" tennis conditions.

If you watch tennis or play it, you know very well his margins rise dramatically the more his spin takes and the less heavy that ball gets with moisture.

Again, Djokovic does more running on clay than Nadal in this match-up. So how is Nadal the defensive pusher when DJOKOVIC is the one on defense more often? And the one running more?

Your haterade clouds any potential objectivity :wavey:

Umm because Djokovic wins his own serves by playing quick points and hitting winners? Then he gets into the long rallies in Nadal's service games, where naturally he'll run more since the server is the aggressor by default.

Overall, it's clear that Djokvic is the more aggressive player, from how they play right down to the stats.

Mixed feelings about the final, I am not too gutted by a nadull victory , although he should be thankfully to the rain , and illegal coaching by Toni NID.
However if Novak had won RG and 4 slams at once, it would have cheapen the NCGS and CGS. Novak is good but it's fitting nadull stopped him just as he did federer. The nole tards would become unbearable proclaiming him GOAT.

Sadly enough, that is true. It is kind of similar to how Rafa was to Roger all these years. The simple fact is that once Djokovic goes to the Nadal backhand, it is advantage Djokovic. However, he is the only player on the planet who can exploit that weakness, and so Nadal could (and probably will) win some more (non-clay) slams without having to go through Djokovic. And honestly on a hot day, Nadal could still beat Djokovic off of clay. Djokovic's level won't be perfect 100% of the time, and Nadal had his chances earlier this year at Australia. Djokovic definitely has the edge, but it is not an absolute edge.

Congrats to Rafa, the greatest clay court player in history in most people's opinion. A loss here would have been devastating to Rafa on both a personal level and for his legacy. Djokovic should have a fine ending to the year. Djokovic played really rough for several matches at RG, and still managed to go to the finals and give Rafa a match. If Djokovic is even playing at 75% next year he will be the favorite for RG 2013 IMO.

I'm sorry, but some reactions are just funny

Yes Djokovic had the momentum yesterday winning 8 games in a row, but Nadal won a really important and good game in the fourth set: 2-1.

So ok, maybe Nadal was more lucky with the rain delay, but is that Nadal his fault? Can he help it? That's also part of tennis when you play outside. Who can deal better with such conditions.

Besides that, there was still nothing wrong today for Djokovic. He was still leading with a break.

And if he was really the better player, he also would have won today. But he was not.

So to say he only won because of the rain delay is to easy IMO!

No doubt that Rafa is the claygoat (he was even before this match)but this result leaves a bad taste. It's a bit sad History (in one way or the other)had to be made that way.
Anwyway, Novak will have to try again for the Nole slam.As for their rivalry, I don't think it will help Rafa's confidence that much.If anything, it showed that even in a FO final he is not safe when he meets Novak.Big difference with what happened when he was facing Roger all these years.

I'm not really sure I get where this thinking is coming from. He lost sets to Federer here too, even got breadsticked, and fought out many a tight set, that's pretty much the same as this match. According to some people the only one to exemplify he's "better" than Nole on clay is to dominate him from start to finish, but Nole is far too good a player to go down without a fight. In the end it was fairly comprehensive for Nadal, with Djoker having big chances to make it alot closer, ie a pretty standard Fedal final.
