David played really well. Gave a great account of himself and even had a chance to go up 2-0 in sets.He fought really well to keep it close in that last set to spite constantly being under pressure from roger and could have gotten on serve early on.

he's definately made a name for himself here and i hope he uses this as a platform for the rest of his season. Nothing to be ashamed of.

Goffin played insane for the first two sets save for 1 servicegame deep in the second which made him lose it. The kid has a great, offensive game and a good serve. :hatoff:

Roger was a bit lucky in the second but found his rhythm in the third and played some good tennis.

Goffin played really well for the first 2 sets, and then Federer stepped up his game and took it in 4 to reach his 32nd consecutive GS QF appearance. That is 8 years!! Amazing :)

Good luck in the QF!!

He is 21 years old, I don't know many 21 year olds who continue to grow, you really have to wonder, how much bigger will he get, its not like we are talking about a 16 year old here. He is older than Bernard Tomic, Milos, Ryan Harrison and so on.

Again, strangely similar to 2009. He was two points away from being two sets down, but then found his game and raced through the final two sets. Let's hope he can sustain this in the quarters because, if he can, it'll be a straight sets win for sure (a la 2009, vs. Monfils).

By the way, I have no idea why Goffin isn't ranked higher... He was playing incredible tennis at times.

zillion federrors in first 2 sets doesnt say anything good about his form. This win was more about Goffin who lost belief ,losing that close 2nd set.

Fed will not get past Berdych/ Pony fooling around like this. And maybe he shouldnt play too much here . He is not gonna win it anyway (considering Nadal`s überform) and there is no reason to get another spanking from Djoko or Nadull.

He has lot more chances in Wimby if he is fresh and well rested there.

I know all the haters will be in here saying "Your GOAT lost to some J Fox kid" but seriously, if you haven't watched the game you should STFU. Goffin played extremely well, served the big serves and won the big points with some awesome shots. He was worth a set against anyone (yes, Nadal too) in that form.

As for Fed, he was not prepared for such a high level match in the first set, adjusted slowly and raised his level with every point to the end of the 3rd set. He did HAVE to play some very high level tennis to win this match and he did.

All in all it was a great game to watch, lot's of great points and winners. Good prep match for the QF as well.

Fed wasn't that bad against Ungur, Mahut and today Goffin. He played against guys who believed in them and play awesome tennis at parts of the match. Goffin I've to say was the most impressive of them from my point of view, in the first two sets, it was incredible shots hitting. The only reason he played great, was the fact Federer was way to passive, and waited Goffin to choke and give him free win. I don't like seeing Federer playing like that, not 1 match before Delpo/Berdych, he should have rise his level by now and be ready to get into his max level, not to do that vs Berdych/Delpo where he got no chance to test things out...he should be ready.

I disagree. The people he's played against in this tournament, Stepanek, Clement, Kubot and Federer have all been attacking players who fed him pace and gave him a target. The reason Goffin hasn't cracked the top 100 up until now is because he hasn't done well against players who grind out matches and make him generate his own pace. I suspect Nadal would be a bad match-up for him for that reason. People forget he will be 22 this year so it's hard to see how much he can still grow.

Federer's luck is so ridiculous its hilarous. He gets a lucky loser which never happens, then two players that could surely beat him have 1 day rest. I am not suprised, he always has had this especially on clay, but this year with this draw its just too good.

Goffin might have a monotone voice but don't forget, he's not a tour fellow yet, so he barely knows how to face the camera, leave alone handle media-scrutiny and the hate-brigade. As of now, his charm is in his honesty, in the pure-hearted and politically incorrect comments.

Calm down Guga. Roger is not winning this tournament. No way. Past his best, spraying errors all over the place, barely winning vs someone who has just gone through puberty. And even at his best he could not beat Nadal here.

Lets try and look at feds matches from r2-r4 objectively. He's not playing his best but he doesn't have to at this point. Lets not forget he had 6 weeks off then played in madrid on a surface very different and injured himself before the madrid final. Could have skipped rome but didn't and played 3 matches and the night matches finally got to him and he really played awful vs nole.

Now arriving in RG he's had to adjust to different balls then they've been using and perhaps still stuggling with injuries that he carried into rome.

The conditions haven't been that great in paris so far with very windy and cool days. Lets also not forget he has played 3/4 opponenets he's never played before so that is always a little tricky.

Opponent : 1st serve %, Winners, Errors, Times fed got broken, winning % on first serves, Winning % on 2nd serves, Net points

R2: Unguar: 64% , 50 , 40 , 0 , 78 , 66 , 16/26 = 62%

R3: Mahut: 58% , 54 , 25 , 2 , 82 , 66 , 22/32 = 69%

R4: Goffin: 61% , 59 , 51 , 1 , 82 , 63 , 21/29 = 72%

Mahut and Goffin came ready to play and played very well to be honest while fed got better later in the match and didn't start that great. Wind was pretty bad vs goffin and fed is playing a likely future star who he's never played before.

Let's see what the qf match is like when he plays an opponent he has played in the past. He's bound to play better at some point which is great for him one would think.

Very excited with Davids showing today : he proved his run is no fluke, he wasn't overwhelmed and he took it to Federer with very agressive and risky play. I think he showed the World today he Will be back for more and this is only the beginning.

Also the crowd seemed to like him and he won some fans over here as well I see.
Very brave performance, David has the game and the mentality to become at least solid top 30 if he improves on overall fitness and balance.
He has always had Great hands and very fluid technique and he has strong nerves and the ability to stay cool under all circumstances as proven today.

Also very exciting tow watch a player break through that I already saw playing as a youth player.

For the non French speakers:

Interviewer : We're gonna start with you David : It was a dream for you, you played against Roger Federer that you loved before today's match right ? "And less, after" said Roger.
DG : Yeah i lived more than an extroadinary week, then i played my best tennis, i played 3 good matches and the most was to play here against Roger Federer. I can't hide you that i have pictures of Roger in my bedroom.
Audience : we want the kiss, the kiss !
I : After the itw
DG : I think he doesn't want it ! I'm very happy to played here, i enjoyed the moment with Roger, and wish him luck for the rest of the tournament.

I : Thanks. It's not easy i imagine for him. He took the first set.
RF : Yeah it's not easy, this is his second week here, and the match were difficult, there was wind, David played well, i had difficulties. Well I didn't know him, now i know him a little more and i will know him better when i'll kiss him.
I congratulate him with all my heart for all his super tournament ans his match today.
I : Now in the "changing room" (not sure of this one) you will talk to him, cause he didn't dare to talk to you before.
RF: You don't have to be shy with me, i think i'm one of the old number 1 who's relax enough. With me you can talk, plus i speak a little bit of french then..
I : More than a little bit. What is your advise for him, cause you know he's only 21, he will be 22 in december.
RF: to get some rest now. Day after day he will progress, to enjoy the moment, not to be disapointed after he lose, and keep working hard, then beat best players. He almost did that today so it was already great.
I : Exactly. Thanks for these advise. Roger, one more question : qualified for 1/4 it becomes harder now, how do you feel ?
RF : Not so bad, but i have to. It's 1/4 now, it's important but fortunatly i can get some rest tomorrow.
RF : Not that i'm in trouble but, it's good cause the match last almost 3 hours i guess. I'm happy, even if i was favourite for the matches i played for now, i'm happy. I hope DP and Berdych will make a good match and i hope it will end today cause if not, it's unfair honestly. So i'll get some rest and then i'll prepare myself for the next match.

Federer did not play a bad match which makes the loss of a set somewhat surprising. Goffin has surpassed many expectations, he hits a great ball and does not hesitate to take risks or move in for the attack. confidence like his is attractive in a tennis player these days because so many are scared to play like he does and would rather stay far behind the baseline or are too prone to errors.

Goffin is one to watch, I can see this guy dramatically rising in rankings. today how he played was at times good enough to beat anyone

only good thing about this FO is that just two tard bases have plenty to lose and will be struggling in pain and tears. from now everything what fed does with this how he plays is a bonus, he wasn't going to win this anyway. on the other side nadal is a huge favorite and for his tards the title is already in his hands, and nole tards still pretty confident about those 7 wins in a row against nadal so 2 recent defeats aren't playing big roll for them in reaching their main goal Nole slam. at the end not a bad Sunday is coming

Couldnt see the full match, caught the highlights now. Federer didnt really play too bad, says everything about Goffin's play then that he still took the first set and was so close to being 2-0 :scared: Awesome hitting from the young guy, great to see a rare young-gun showing some promise, hopefully he will build on this

But Roger's game has really not been clicking all tournament and it will take a real turnaround for him to win the QF against Delpotro or Berdych both of whom are striking the ball a lot better. Hoping Fed's championship mettle will take him through of course

For me the most worrying thing about this FO is that Fed has expended too much energy in these should-have-been-freebie matches and it doesnt bode well for Daddy for the summer stretch.

well, hoping for the best, onto another QF, thats the best I wished for Roger before RG and now all are bonuses.

Apart from the first set, where Fed tried his utmost best to imitate Azarenka from earlier that day, he actually played rather decently in this match. Started off sloppy but improved all throughout the remainder of the match - I rather see that happening than the other way round - him dropping form halfway or towards the end of the match. Still... any win from now on, if it happens, will be a bonus.

David Goffin! I'll admit it, yes I've joined the bandwagon. Artistic, attractive gamestyle, great shotmaking, and a bit of showmanship, too. :yeah:
