Scud's affair out of the blue
Nick Papps in Los Angeles

DELTA Goodrem is devastated by revelations Mark Philippoussis has been cheating on her with American socialite Paris Hilton.

The Australian singer knew nothing about the affair and last night Goodrem's mother Lea was preparing to fly to London to be with her shattered daughter.

"Delta is really upset," a source close to the Goodrem family said. "She only knew about it when the family was contacted by the media.

"It's the worst way to find out, to read about it."

Goodrem's heartbreak came as another Australian tennis ace was caught in the middle of a bust-up after Kim Clijsters broke off her engagement to Lleyton Hewitt four months before their wedding. Hewitt, 23, is believed to be heading overseas as he searches for answers to the shock end to their relationship.

As the Goodrem family prepared to comfort their 19-year-old daughter, a defiant Philippoussis yesterday refused to talk about his actions.

The tennis ace spent yesterday lapping up the sun and surfing in southern California and said: "I don't talk about my private life."

Asked three times to say the stories about him and Hilton were untrue, Philippoussis repeatedly refused to deny he had been involved with Hilton.

"You will just write what you want," he said. "I'm not going to say anything. I have nothing to say now."

Philippoussis then happily chatted about the four hours of surfing he has every day, his plan to skip an upcoming tennis tournament in Stockholm, his desire to win a grand slam and his training regime.

He finished the conversation by saying: "If you look after me, I will look after you."

The end of Philippoussis and Goodrem's nine-month relationship followed comments by 23-year-old heiress Paris Hilton that she is having a relationship with Philippoussis.

"I've got a new man, and I'm head over heels in love," she said. "I adore him, he's so hot. His name is Mark Philippoussis."

Producing an SMS mobile phone photo of a half-naked Philippoussis, Hilton then said her new beau had broken up with Goodrem because she was "boring".

Just a few hours later, Hilton was seen partying at trendy Los Angeles club Spider with her on-and-off boyfriend, extreme skateboarder Chad Muska.

It is understood the Goodrem family were especially surprised that Philippoussis had been involved with Hilton, a well known party animal and notorious man-eater.

One close friend of the singer also said Goodrem would not be ringing Philippoussis to talk about the scandal. "She has too much class," she said.

It is believed the Goodrem family is furious about Philippoussis' actions, since the revelations come at a time when the singer has to face the public, promoting a new album with many media appearances scheduled over the next few days.

Goodrem and Philippoussis started dating in January when she was recovering from her well publicised battle with Hodgkin's disease.

Last night as Philippoussis tried to avoid the spotlight and Goodrem came to terms with the break-up, a friend of the singer said she had no doubt Goodrem would get over it. "She has got over much more than this."

We know, we know... but now I wonder if Delta is a big saint or if she was getting a bit to comfy with Brian McFadden... Maybe they already broke up before they both started.. euhm.. well, looking for someone else ;)

We don't know what happened, so we shouldn't make a bigger deal out of this than it is...

i dont think that breaking up is a bad thing necessarily
but if Delta is finding out in this cheap way, on the news. And then, finds out that it is with a trashy one like Paris.... this is not cool man
I think that the Scud could have the courtesty of calling before he entered the Paris Hilton, its such cad like behavior

Do you know what really happened? Neither Delta, nor Mark made public statements about this. If she did have to find out through the press, then Mark is just an asshole, but we don't know until either one of them starts talking... (which might mean that we are never gonna find out and have to judge the situation by the rumors.. we'll see)

I don't know them personally, but I cannot imagine Mark being that harsh. He helped her so much the last period and he knew from the start the she was sick and that he had to support her.. So really, if he wanted to get laid, he could've picked an easier girl.. but I don't know what the situation was... really, we can only guess. I'm just not gonna call him a jerk before I know more.

This guy says basically what many of us have been saying

Louise Evans: New-model Scud marks time with Paris love match

October 26, 2004
DELTA Goodrem is the type of girl you take home to meet mum. Paris Hilton is the type of girl you take home when mum's not there.

Is it any wonder that a lowly ranking Australian tennis player such as Mark Philippoussis has been distracted away from Delta by the Hilton heiress? And for a player who changes his coaches as often as he changes his socks it is entirely consistent that he should rotate his girlfriends with a similar frequency.

Why stroke short hair when you can stroke an heiress? Why take home the girl next door when you can take an heiress up against the door - any door.

If Paris so much as smiled at most men on this planet, whether they be gay or straight, they would dine out on it for the rest of their quiet lives. Paris has what most of us only dream about: endless money, sexual freedom and total independence to do as she pleases. And she does - usually in front of a camera. Plus she's 23, pretty and blonde. So we deal with our envy by hating her. We label her a bimbo and a slut. It's a nasty word, slut, one we reserve for women we don't like and who may also be sexually active with multiple partners. The equivalent word for a male root rat is stud. "Scud the stud in tryst with slut." Now there's a headline. If it lasts more than five minutes put "long-term" before tryst.

Let's be honest. Delta was too good for the Poo. The same goes for Kim Clijsters and Lleyton Hewitt. Kim was far too nice for Lleyton. Hewitt has a mean streak that's reflected in his parents' grim courtside frowns. It works for him on the tennis court because you need that killer instinct to win. Ditto Pat Cash and his model ex-wife. He was mean. She was lean. Pat Rafter got to keep the whole package - the sweet model wife plus baby - but then Pat's a nice guy who lacked the desire to grind his opponents into the dirt.

The fact that Kim and Lleyton were together for five years is the surprise, not that they did a Jimmy Connors and Chris Evert and broke up - five months before the fairytale wedding. Imagine going through life with those omnipresent parents sitting on the end of your bed.

The Poo quite liked having Delta sitting sweetly at the end of his bed, even if there may have been too much sitting. She's talented, her career is on the rise despite all those dirgeful songs she insists on singing. She's also beautiful, rich and she has princess status. She's the type of girl men put on a pedestal.

As for the Poo, his career is on the slide and may have already hit the wall.

He has become the Anna Kournikova of the male tennis world - a model tennis player - which is fitting because the Poo and Anna have had more than the odd tryst together.

Any social tennis player will tell you the problem with the Poo's game. When his giant serve goes west, his game goes south, and he's back in the locker room before you can say: "New balls, please."

And he has the concentration span of a rabbit. In post-match press conferences, the Poo can get halfway through answering a question when he forgets what the question is. It's a wonder he can remember who his girlfriend is.

But he's also rich and so pretty he has advertisers begging to use his flexed pecs to flog their must-haves. So in fact he's the perfect physical and intellectual match for Paris. Isn't Paris Match a French magazine? "Paris Match brings you Paris's perfect match." Good cover story.

Philippoussis got his taste for dating famous girls with Anna Cupcake at grand-slam tennis events where grand-slam sex should be posted on the menu in the players dining room as the plat du jour. Because of drug testing and the need to be constantly on your game, drugs and alcohol are off the menu but sex is a good way to let off steam without getting fat or a hangover. So there is always a queue of players lining up to get some in the dining room. (For further insights see the movie Wimbledon.) The Poo was expecting more of the same at the Olympics. He rolled up to Athens expecting to be treated like the Greek god that he is and all anyone wanted to talk to him about was Delta du jour, who sang and got sick.

There was a wonderful slice of television during the Olympics when the Channel 7 team was reading out emails sent to the Australian team. One came from a boy addressed to Philippoussis. It started "Dear Mark" but that was where the interest in the Poo ended. The boy wanted to know how Delta was and if Mark could ask her to come and visit his school when she came back home.

The Poo was cool about playing second fiddle in Delta's backing band. He could even have coped with the lack of grand-slam sex. But then the heiress smiled at him. He must have left skid marks escaping the dirgeful Delta for his perfect match. Or should that be scud marks? Stud marks?

I don't think it's a great article. I mean I am no fan of Hewitt or Philippoussis but do attack their private life by trying to do some kind of analogy with their attitude on a tennis court is not cool at all.
Just because you are one way at work doesn't mean you're acting the same way at home.
It's cheap to take a shot at those guys now that they've been publicly embarrassed.

Exactly! The article isn't quoting either one of the players they are just fantasizing along what they could've thought about their situations and it's just telling the readers what they wanna hear: that Mark is a pig.. Really cheap of them.

One advice for free - don´t read articles like that. You know, they write it coz they´re sure all people will read it when they have nobody to read such crap, then they won´t write it.

I think that reply by the hack at The Australian is more feral than the one at newsonline.com.au

At least the parody site does not disguise itself as being legitimate news. I think the reality of it all is Scud likes the girls, and cannot make up his mind because of all the groupies that throw themselves at him.

Which is probably the reason his tennis is crap lately.

If they had already broken up (which all reports indicate that they had), what Mark does with his life is none of Delta's business
