No real surprise here. Gulbis served at 38% for the match and won 35% of second serve points. Bubka lost three points on serve in the second set, two being double faults, with a 77% first serve percentage. The match started with three straight breaks of serve before Bubka held to 15 for 3-1. Gulbis served at 30% and won 3/16 second serve points up to the point he got broken again at *2-4. Bubka failed to close the first set out at *5-2 and Gulbis had 15-30 to break again at *5-4 and didn't take advantage.

Bubka took advantage of his only break point opportunity of the second set at 4 all to serve for the match, which he did to love.

One of the better wins of Bubka's career, he took advantage of the situation and got a win here, good for him. As for Gulbis, yet another first round loss this season.

Easy match for Monf next round. Ernie maybe you should retire after all.

When you're a guy who relies on your serve as a weapon, and you're being broken and hurt this badly on second serves against a returner like Bubka, you know you have some serious issues to work on with your game. Generally when you lose that badly on second serve points, it means you're losing the rallies overall.

It's to the point where it's not funny anymore, but I'm still laughing. Sigh...

dont say that. it would be awful if gulbis retired T_T

Bubka in 2. Gulbis is a fucking joke these days.

Any other result would have been the biggest upset of 2012. NID.

Sergei and Vika :yeah:.

dont say that. it would be awful if gulbis retired T_T

Didn't he say that he would retire if he had another bad year? I believe Matosevic and Gulbis both said this, but only Matosevic has managed to make a push in the rankings after making the statement.

No one would probably miss him if he left the tour IMO.

Gulbis has shown some good stuff on clay the past few seasons (well, in 2010 at least), we'll see if he can do so again. I think this result is his 5th first round loss in six events. The question now is if it's still his mind that's the problem, or if his game has actually declined.

Go say that in the Gulbis forum and see if the girls let you leave alive :toothy:

Nice on Bubka! First TMS-win right? Hope he continues to qualify and play well this year. Hope he chooses to play some challengers as well though.

mugbis should find himself another hobby because clearly he doesn't know how to play tennis.
