Well, we all know Paulo is not the strongest mentally. In his first two matches, he had lapses, particularly at the end of the sets, but was able to recover from them and not have these lapses hurt him too badly. Today was a different story. Paulo missed seven of seven break points in the second set and had openings on return in most of Menendez' service games. As well, after serving great in the first set, his serve percentage dropped in the second set to around 50%, allowing Menendez to start getting into return games himself. Paulo was dictating a lot of play but Menendez was fighting hard and counter-punching well.

After Mathieu had 15-30 to win the match at 5-4 and didn't break, he had 30-15 at 5 all, where he proceeded to miss a regulation forehand, double fault, and then Menendez hit a BH DTL to break serve for the first time in the match to serve for the second set, which he closed out easily with big serves.

In the third set, Menendez didn't lose a first serve point, 14/14 points won on first serve. Paul looked tired and looked deflated and dropped serve at 2 all with more errors. He had some openings in the third but just wasn't focused, he made bad errors on the big points, and Menendez played his best when it mattered and wanted it more in the end. Best win in the career of Menendez. Disappointing for Paulo, but he didn't deserve to win after blowing so many opportunities.

Paulo :awww:

A shame, it could of been a 6-2 6-4 victory. Oh well, stay healthy and continue your comeback from the 700th place in the rankings :rocker2: He should be top 150 to the end of the year even if he plays bad tennis for his standards.
