First day of Miami qualies and already 4 retirements.

How many more to go down.

But this retirements are for illness or injured?

The qualies have started an hour ago, and already 4 players have retired. Extremely weird. In all of the matches involved the 2nd set didn't even start.

all retired after completing the first set, except for Zopp

I still don't understand why players retire from matches. Unless gravely injured or deathly ill, finish the damn match.

Actually, don't come on court at all if you can't put forth a performance. But guys play and then retire to save their bodies, which I have no issue with. Also they want the 1st roud paycheck.

I think these are actual injuries and not illness related, but who knows?

Kudratseyev retired in Sarajevo on Saturday.

On the whole, I agree, but we don't actually know what happened to those players, do we?
If it's injuries, perhaps a coincidence - it happens.
If it's that same goddamn virus - :help:

Very strange.

how much do first round qualifier losers get?

I'd imagine Kudryavtsev never had any intention of finishing his match here. Nice place for a spring break I guess.

journeymen. qualifiers and first round losers in main draw should not be paid anything, the quality in the sport will skyrocket mark my words.

Zopp didn't realise you have to finish the first set to get paid out.

It could be the weather. Miami has not registered temps higher than 30C lately but the conditions are usually pretty rough with the humidity and all.

I've heard there is a heat wave in those parts of USA and combined with Florida's high humidity it must be tough on court.
Coming from not too hot and desert dry Indian Wells to Miami is like coming to another planet. A huge difference and tough for your body.

I still don't understand why players retire from matches. Unless gravely injured or deathly ill, finish the damn match.

Can't wait to see you retiring when you are a pro.

Wah wah wah. The guys playing qualies had several days to adjust to the conditions. This is a lack of fitness and/or a lack of fighting spirit. Unless of course, there was a freak injury or serious illness. Then, retiring is ok. Otherwise, play through it. Don't quit because its hot and humid and you're losing.

I'm sure some of them were wholly justified, but four in one day? Really? If retirements start getting increasingly common, it sets a bad precedent imo.
