Kudryavtsev must be joking....

Bachinger-Bemelmans should be interesting, i dont think Bemelmans is a good hc player but bachinger doesnt have any form... what you think about this one Filo?

Miami is even slower then Indian Wells,no?

Filo V.
03-19-2012, 12:53 AM
Kudry I'm guessing tanked the Sarajevo SF to get here. Or, he's actually carrying an injury and will lose easily here. Could be either. We'll see. I don't think he'd beat ERV regardless.

Bemelmans should beat Bachinger based on form. I think these courts don't really suit either but Bemelmans does everything better than Bachinger outside of consistency from the baseline and backhands, and even these things Bachinger has been struggling with.

Miami is heavier than Indian Wells, the courts are naturally quicker but the balls are heavy and hard due to humidity. So it's difficult to hit through the courts in Miami. The ball bounce is less than Indian Wells but is still quite high.

Who I want to qualify: Golubev, don't care at all about the second section as long as Kamke doesn't qualify, Garcia-Lopez, Gabashvili, Paire, Bautista-Agut, Zeballos, Andreev, Dancevic, Bubka, Serra, Russell (with Bolelli and Phau getting LL positions.)

Who I expect to qualify: Golubev, Zemlja, Garcia-Lopez, Gabashvili, Zopp, Bautista-Agut, Zeballos, Elias, Dancevic, Dutra Da Silva, Serra, Phau

Some very tough matches here,Paire should destroy Kuznetsov,Golubev shouldnt have problems with Ward as well...
Evans lost his last 2 matches in horrible style, should not have a chance against Phau, cant understand he doesnt defend his SF @ Bath...

Filo V.
03-19-2012, 01:16 AM
Evans I think is an IMG player so that's why he's here. Phau should take Evans out comfortably if he's playing well. They have somewhat similar games but Bjorn is significantly more powerful and faster.

I'm extremely split on Delic-Bolelli and Zeballos-Rufin. Those matches could go either way. Sugita-Odesnik, I can see the Japanese pulling off the upset there. Goffin-Zopp is a good up-and-comer match but Goffin hasn't played much recently with injury, and Zopp should win comfortably since these courts suit his game more. Smyczek-Russell is a rematch from Indian Wells qualifying. Smyczek retired injured from Dallas this past week. Russell is in bad form and just changed racquets, so that match is up in the air.

Chuidinelli-Ilhan is another 50-50 match. The Swiss is in better form, and although the courts suit Ilhan more, Chuidinelli can overpower Ilhan if he's hitting the ball well. Elias-Capdeville will be another match I have my eye on. Elias is an IMG player, he should have confidence here but Capdeville will have crowd support. Elias has more weapons but Capdeville can grind down Elias, IMO.

How serious is Odesnik's injury?

Also, I'm looking forward to see how Bagnis does on HC, hopefully he can get a win or two, even more because he plays Prodon who is in a poor form.

Yeah, these courts are much slower, and they're both claycourters with one of them being in a decent form, and it's Bagnis

Filo V.
03-19-2012, 02:17 AM
Wayne was sick, not injured, so he should be fine here. Goffin I read had some sort of arm issue a while ago, so I guess arm/wrist situation, but he hasn't played in almost a month so he should be fine, I think he also probably wanted to rest/train since he played basically every week to start the season.

Bagnis' record on HC in challengers/futures do not suggest he'll be competitive here. But I've seen Prodon on HC and he can't move on it, plus his BH is more easily exposed. Bagnis actually I think is the favorite in that match. And I wouldn't be too shocked to see him qualify, especially if he plays Zeballos.

Arno has been off for a while and has a bad record in Miami. He's won two matches the past five seasons in Miami. Andreev also leads the H2H 2-0 and has had good performances in Miami so the advantages are completely in favor of the Russian.

golubev is the best player from first section but on these courts i don't trust him. erv's consistent play can qualify from there. i don't give a chance to kudry and ward.

kamke is out of form lately but will beat silva imho. still zemlja is the best player from this section and having OK form, so he should qualify easily.

garcia-lopez even won't lose a set with this draw and his level of play.

fourth section is very enjoyable and hard to predict one. winner of bachinger vs. bemelmans qualifies imho but it won't be shock if ram or gaba does it too.

zopp is my favourite from this section. if goffin beats him in the first round, goffin qualifies then.

bautista-agut has a good draw. de voest is a very weak player. lorenzi and brugues-davi are tough match-ups for him in the second round but i believe that bautista-agut better player than both of them.

rufin has a dream draw. i believe and hope he qualifies.

andreev is the another one who has very easy draw. he has no reason to not qualify from this sort of section.

mello will beat dancevic, imo. dancevic ain't good as mentally and physically. sugita-odesnik will be greulling match with long rallies and mello will eat the winner of that match.

ilhan and bubka plays the final round. bubka wins.

bolelli will qualify. but if delic will have a good serving day anything can happen.

phau and russell wins their first rounds and plays very tough match for main draw. phau is in great form, russell generally does win usa, very tough to expect but let's say phau.

I think he's going to upset Andreev. I think either he or Capdeville, the winner of that match, has a good shot at beating Igor. I hope not, but I question Igor being able to back up his result from Dallas. And I think fatigue could set in. Plus, both Elias and Capdeville should be motivated for their own individual reasons.

Don't really understand why Kudry showed up here. Is there a penalty for withdrawing? Clearly he couldn't really give a performance. Even with that, ERV struggled on serve most of the set so it will be interesting what he does vs Ward/Golubev and if they can take advantage of that.

Filo V.
03-19-2012, 03:57 PM
Benoit had several BP's at 2-*4 to come back in the second set and none were taken. Start of the third set will be important in that match, since both players are hot headed.

Filo V.
03-19-2012, 03:59 PM
Bubka takes the first set 7-5. Dutra had only lost a couple points on serve until his final couple service games. Sergei should be able to win now.

Paire breaks for *1-0 then gets broken back immediately.

Filo V.
03-19-2012, 04:07 PM
Kuznetsov saves two break points and holds for 2-1 in the third set.

So Benoit was up a break, had 30-0 and dropped serve, then had the break points and didn't break. Don't be surprised if he falls apart from here.

Filo V.
03-19-2012, 04:23 PM
Bagnis breaks Prodon after a long game for *3-2 in the second set. Prodon's FS percentage is poor and he can't get by that on hardcourt, like he does on clay. Without his serve he lacks real weapons on hardcourt.

Very poor serving from Zeballos. Both he and Rufin had their chances throughout the first set but, of course, it was Rufin who took his chance when it mattered at 5 all to take the set. Somewhat surprised with the mediocre serving from both players.

Filo V.
03-19-2012, 04:51 PM
Predictable win for Bagnis. I think he can beat Rufin if that's his next opponent.

Pretty poor service numbers from Ilhan. These types of courts should favor Ilhan in this match but his form isn't good enough. Marco has a bit more weapons that make the difference.

The Rocket

Deathless Mortal

I'm glad Bagnis won, but I'm pretty sure it's because an out of form clay courter. I really don't think he can beat Rufin, but we'll see I guess.

Filo V.
03-19-2012, 05:00 PM
Rufin really isn't showing anything impressive on HC. And these courts play like a clay court, anyway.

Filo V.
03-19-2012, 05:01 PM
Simone already behind. Of all the players he could have drawn, he got Delic. Not a good match-up but he still should have his chances, if he picks the game up. Had 3 break points and took none of them, not a good sign.

Filo V.
03-19-2012, 05:06 PM
Ilhan has won 46% of service points against Marco Chiuidnelli. And his serve is supposedly one of his only weapons. Very bad. Seemingly Ilhan cannot start a season in winning form.

Filo V.
03-19-2012, 05:11 PM
Simone gets the break back. Good. Now time to really put himself into the match.

Filo V.
03-19-2012, 05:11 PM
Capdeville looked injured last week in Mexico, so no surprise at all to me he's struggling with Elias. Elias has the game to beat Capdeville, even if the Chilean were healthy. Plus, he's an IMG guy. He's got a lot of motivation to perform well this week.

Only served at 42% in the first set but Capdeville's own serve is a mess.

Match got extremely comfortable after the first couple games of the second set. I guess Zeba fell apart after missing the amount of openings he had, and having Rufin take advantage of his.

Two wins over the past three weeks over Zeballos for the Frenchman.

Filo V.
03-19-2012, 05:25 PM
Damn, Phau got broken. Evans has had openings in virtually all of Bjorn's service games. Expected a tight match and that's what it appears it's going to be. Bjorn's going to have his chances, though. Has to hold serve now to stay in the first set.

Well, Simone gets broken to go down 2-4 in the second. Had 30-*15 second serve at 2 all, didn't take advantage, broken immediately. I know Amer will be very motivated here but Simone's form has once again dropped and he's not doing well on the hardcourts.

I'd be more upset if Simone didn't have next to nothing to defend and if I didn't want Serra to qualify from that section anyway. Hopefully he does better next week in Le Gosier.

Schoorel getting beaten BADLY by Serra. Not doing anything on return and struggled to hold almost every one of his service games. This guy kept it competitive with Federer just last season at Doha. Questioning why Vagnozzi is here. But Reynolds doesn't have the game nor mentality to really punish Vagnozzi. Can anyone see an upset there? Doubt it but we'll see.

GGL having some difficulty with Viola. Viola is really awful based on everything I've seen from him. I'm surprised he wins matches at the rate he does.

Bemelmans being destroyed by Bachinger. More disappointed than surprised.

GGL has turned things around nicely but still only one break up in the third. Hopefully he can finish things out.

Smyczek won the first set losing eight service points. Not gonna cut if for Mikey Russell. Smyczek isn't a great server and the best part of Russell's game is his return. Should be doing better than he is.

De Voest had been holding comfortably nearly the entire match vs Bautista, but slipped up one game to be broken and eventually lose the first set. Bautista shouldn't be having that much trouble on return, although he's not the greatest of returners.

As long as Igor holds serve, he'll likely eventually have a chance to break. He's in a comfortable position.

Arno just kept at it, kept at it, and Igor's service numbers are really starting to fall apart. Arno is simply fighting hard, and he's one of the biggest fighters around. When he wants to win he'll keep himself motivated and completely pumped up to do so.

Unfortunate for Igor he had to play today, but credit to Arno for sticking with it.

Filo V.
03-20-2012, 12:26 AM
I'm proud of Arno. Igor honestly needs the rest anyway to get ready for clay. Clement needs the points more at this point and Igor is in position to do a lot of damage on clay starting in Casablanca. I'm not too disappointed, not at all, actually, as long as Arno makes something of this. If he loses to Capdeville I'll be beyond pissed.

Filo V.
03-20-2012, 12:33 AM
Lorenzi literally ruins everything for today. Everything. He's such a garbage ass player. I cannot stand his ugly ass. So what was a day I would be mostly happy about turns mediocre quickly. Fuck him. He winning and Gaba withdrawing make me unsatisfied, but tomorrow is another day.

What I'd like is every seed to win in front of Bolelli and Phau, Serra and Russell beat Bolelli and Phau respectively and then those two get LL positions. But now I may have to change my mentality, because I'd rather see Lorenzi lose than see other favorites not make the draw at all.

jonnyboy21
03-20-2012, 12:34 AM

Filo V.
03-20-2012, 12:40 AM
Crapdeville is a horrible player overall, Arno has a good match-up with him, but I think fatigue+crowd support may push the Chilean over the edge. Depends on how each serves, really.

Miami is essentially another home tournament for Chilean players. So that factor remains a big factor here.

Filo V.
03-20-2012, 12:46 AM
Lorenzi's serve really pushed him to victory today. 11 aces. A lot of grinders have developed big serves as a means to get quick points and hold serve easier to take pressure off their overall mediocre games.

jonnyboy21
03-20-2012, 01:05 AM
Roberto should crush Lorenzi tomorrow.

Filo V.
03-20-2012, 01:14 AM
I actually, borderline travesty, but I have to root for Lorenzi tomorrow. I want all four of Russell, Bolelli, Serra and Phau in the MD. I would root against Lorenzi easily but I'm not sure if there will be 3 withdrawals. I hope there are, though.

jonnyboy21
03-20-2012, 01:17 AM
Why does Lorenzi winning tomorrow help what you want?

Filo V.
03-20-2012, 01:47 AM
Because it means that there are fewer players who would get a LL spot before Bolelli and Phau.

Filo V.
03-20-2012, 01:59 AM
I expect Roger Vasselin, Kamke, Garcia-Lopez, Bachinger, Paire, Bautista-Agut, Rufin, Capdeville, Dancevic, Bubka, Serra and Phau to qualify. The only matches I have even an inkling of doubt about are the Kamke-Veic, Lorenzi-Bautista and Clement-Capdeville matches. The Clement-Capdeville match to me is extremely 50-50, could go either way, depends a lot on how Clement bounces back from his Andreev match and who can hold their serve best. Lorenzi has played long matches lately but he's been winning most of them, Bautista played for nearly 3 hours. Match could go either way, and who returns the best of the two and plays the most/best offensively will decide the victor.

Kamke should beat Veic. But Veic is a scrambler, a fighter, and Kamke has a weak serve and is mentally fragile. I expect that to be a total breakfest and I think Veic can get into the German's head. I can see Veic winning it. I don't really understand how Kamke is still in the top 100, since he rarely wins. I don't think he's confident, but he has a great opportunity here.

The other matches I expect to be mostly straight forward. I don't think Goffin's game is imposing enough on a court like this to beat Paire. That's probably the most intriguing match on paper, but I see straight sets for Benoit.

jonnyboy21
03-20-2012, 02:13 AM
I agree with your predictions pretty much. Russell can beat Phau but Bjorn's playing decent tennis lately. Veic can definitely win but I don't think he's a better hard court player than Kamke. Ram could upset Bachinger because I think the surface is quite slow for the german, but you could say the same thing for Ram.

Even though Bautista played a long match I expect him to be fresher than Lorenzi. He had to play the day after a final in Mexico and fatigue has got to be getting to him even though most of his Guadalajara matches were quite short except one. Regardless of fatigue, Roberto is a better hard court player than Lorenzi.

Filo V.
03-20-2012, 02:31 AM
Bjorn right now is playing at a different level than Russell is. I'm rooting for Mike but I can't see how he can consistently win points outside of Bjorn making errors. Bjorn has more weapons and matches Russell's biggest strength with his speed. If Mike serves well and plays an aggressive match he can pull it off. He needs to return well and jump on Phau's second serves.

Kamke is definitely better on HC than Veic, but I don't see that being a huge factor in that match. That is more of an intangibles match. I don't even see it as a tennis match, really. It's a mental match.

Bautista should be fresher than Lorenzi for sure. Especially since the Guadalajara tournament was played in high altitude, the conditions difference is a major one. I want Bautista, I think Bautista should win, he has better weapons, more ability to play offense. But Lorenzi will make Bautista grind. The Spaniard can do it, but ultimately he will not win the match by grinding.

Filo V.
03-20-2012, 02:33 AM
Bachinger is equal-to-better at everything than Ram outside of volleying/BH slice/overall touch and feel and on these courts these strengths of Raji will be neutralized. Plus Bachinger takes returns early, although he's not a great returner, he should be able to put enough in play to create break chances. I'm really disappointed Gaba isn't healthy because to me, he'd clean this section right up. But as it stands, Bachinger for me is the significant favorite.

matinjo
03-20-2012, 10:55 AM
GGL - Reynolds -> Bobby has all chances to take the win here or at least make it tide

Lorenzi - Bautista -> Spaniard should win, Lorenzi too much matches for him

Rufin - Bagnis -> Rufin is the clear favorite here, Bagnis is in 2nd round only because he had an easy draw in Prodon

Kamke - Veic -> Antonio will play a good match and the match will be a real fight

Filo V.

Kamke really struggling with Veic down a set and break. Serving at 50% and winning right at around 50% of service points. Veic is only serving 52%, but has saved 5 of 7 break points. That tells you that he's the one winning the big points, not the German.

I was speaking hypothetically but there are several players that are questionable to play here. It doesn't matter now since what I wanted isn't going to work out.

Simone has won all the big points over Serra today. I'm very impressed. That self-belief is coming back.

Reynolds got broken his first service game after a very long game in which he saved two BPs before DFing on a third BP against. GGL really should comfortably win that match. He's better at everything than Reynolds outside of first serves.

Simone finally broke for *5-3 after losing several break points. Now serving for the match.

Reynolds gets the break back on GGL. GGL only winning 1/7 second service points.

Both Florent and Simone having trouble holding serve throughout the match, Florent breaks Bolelli again after Simone saves another break point against. Florent is still competing to win. Winner of the second set will win the match, IMO.

Grigelis def. Fischer 4-6 6-3 7-5

Grigelis broke and held to win the match. Had to save some break points his final few service games and did so. Great win for him. Two guys who have better returns than serves, it isn't too surprising the match played out in this way.

That's not Miami QD :p

I know, I deleted the comment :o

But I'm happy Grigelis won anyway! I don't like Fisher, so weaponless.

Ram up the early break on Bachinger. I hope he wins now, I was rooting for Bachinger but things have changed.

GGL had 4-1 but Reynolds held and then broke. GGL had an opening at 5-4 and didn't break.

Neither guy are holding serve too easily. Sort of a grinding match it seems.

Great win for Simone, but Florent would have qualified in other sections. He would have beaten Veic, he would have qualified if he where Rufin was, or replaced Bubka. I'm so disappointed. It looks like only two out of my several favorites will qualify.

Simone needs the win more since he's close to top 100 and has more immediate points to defend, but my heart was more for Serra. Hopefully he wins Le Gosier next week.

Ram 6-2 over Bachinger

Bachinger's form is poor, but this result surprises me regardless. Totally dominant. Only two first serve points lost and winning around half of return points.

Garcia-Lopez 7-6(1)

Comfortable tiebreak. Reynolds didn't win a service point in the breaker. Too many DF's and a bad second serve winning percentage for GGL but he won the first set regardless. As long as he serves around 70% he can protect that shaky second serve.

Raji serving for the match over Bachinger. Bachinger was cruising on serve until 3 all. Just one slip up and now he's about to lose. Raji has lost only three points on serve the second set.

GGL serving for the match now. Bobby was holding serve the easiest of the two but when it comes to the end of the sets, GGL has stepped up in the match.

I can't stand Bachinger. Poor game and poor attitude. He's just very mediocre all around.

Russell had *15-30 second serve to break the opening game of the second set. That could be a turn-around in the match. Bjorn is a fighter when he puts his mind to winning.

Immediate break for Bjorn. Mikey had his chance to take complete control and failed. Now the match has changed.
