Yes. His forehand is still lethal in my opinion. I was a little bit surprised that he was able to out-aced Isner. It was a bad judgement on Isner's part to let that BH lob shank from Fed to pass him. Congrats on his 4th Indian Wells Title.

Fed's draw sucks, he could play Tursunov, Raonic, Monfils, Del Potro, Nadal, Djokovic. He is not winning this.

Great play from Roger especially in the second set. The first set tiebreak was a bit chokey from both, Federer should have won it much easier but kept giving Isner second chances.

Isner faded a bit in the end. Federer got more returns in and John made the errors.

Isner against Djokovic: 20 aces

Isner against Federer: 4 aces

:spit:

Says it all. Rafa should be kicking himself for losing yesterday. 1000 points and a title lost. Novak cannot be blamed for the loss as Isner was on fire yesterday. Today normal Isner returned. Only 4 aces?!!

Congrats to Fed. He did what he had to do. Must remind of the days he was beating Roddick in finals easily.... Let's hope this strange IW - players dropping like flies; hurricane style winds & freezing cold conditions in the desert - are left behind and normal service is back in Miami.

The crowd were so against Novak yesterday yet today they were pretty neutral. I think they see Fed so much they've actually started to believe he's American. ;) Wimby crowd is clearly the best - no over the top affection for Fed - they spread the love a bit.

Isner was serving nothing like he served yesterday. Djokovic is a FAR superior returner to Federer. Isner faded in the second and all the top 4 would have easily beaten him today. This performance shows why he won't win a slam - he'll upset someone and make a run but he's not going to serve insanely well in 7 best of 5 matches over 2 weeks - especially at the business end of the tournament.

So Federer, is winning master series titles again, when the top players are healthy. WTF, is going on?

It's one thing in a meaningless tournament like Dubai, beating up on Andy, which was pathetic from Murray, but this is ridiculous. The machine, Novak has to come back and save tennis in Miami.

still, it's up to the player, too. Isner made a wrong challenge in that game so felt he didn't want to waste another one, but that's how it goes for everyone  Also worth noting that based on his body language after being broken, he'd already basically given up.

Even when Fed plays the kind of tennis that would beat every single player throughout history (Think AO semifinal vs Roddick) he will still manage to lose to Rafa and in some cases, he actualy manages to climb that mental hurdle a little bit with some help from Nadal and beat him. It's not about ability when it comes to those two. In their semifinal match Roger was cruising and all it took was a loud "VAMOS!" from Rafa and Roger started giving the match away, Novak doesn't get intimidated by Rafa, hence the **** of last year.

Other than that, when Roger plays the tennis he is playing right now, nobody else can beat him. He should really hope Nadal goes lower in the ranking and somehow in the slams Novak draws Nadal in the semis, thats the only way Roger is going to keep winning slams, as long as it is not Nadal. This Roger at the moment would straight set Novak in any surface

Federer transcends nationalism. Even at the USO Fed always got cheered more than other Americans. He is once in an era like Mozart, do you think f*cking Isner has anywhere near the genius or the talent of Federer?

That's why Americans cheer Fed. They see quality when they see it. Doesn't matter if he is American or not. Same at Wimbledon, Roland Garros, etc

Actually, stamina is probably Isner's biggest problem (no mentions of Wimby court 18, please). If he had the stamina to chase after his opponents' serves instead of tanking every single return game to be able to serve well, he'd be winning much more consistently than he does.

Fucking awesome Roger :yeah:  :sobbing: This entire tournament I had zero expectations - outdoors, slow, high-bouncing court, fever and flu, horrific draw (opponents > 5 years younger or never played them before), tough weather conditions - and he slams Nadal in the semis and then Isner to take the title.

Fed himself said after the Raonic match he wasn't feeling well at all and was going to take it match by match and not think ahead too much. Clearly didn't expect to go to the final let alone win the title. But he played thru his form on the way. Great spirit :worship:

federer was also able to summon the weather gods this week... cool, slow and non-lively conditions right on cue for the semi-final with nadal...

congrats to the Weather Gods + Federer: Indian Wells Champions for 2012

enjoying the work this week by isner... really hope he can improve those volleys at the left hip a bit... not costly yesterday, very costly today...

also, isner is a C-grade volleyer compared with the greatest volleyers of the last 30 years, yet his high quality approach play of both wings hides that fact... obviously he has the right guys in his ear as he is coming in more and adding a lot more risk to his play - and this is the blueprint for anyone wanting a slice of the top end money pool... there are too many marathon runners at the top, but there is still room for a sprinter or two - if isner can raise the quality of his finishing volleys a level or two, he's gonna give himself a look at a major final in my opinion...

After good finish of last year, somewhere back in my mind i still had hopes of Fed taking the no. 1 place back again, even for a few weeks.

To me it feels like he is currently motivated like he hasn't been in years, and it also looks like his self-confidence is near peak. Managing to pull out a tournament he hasn't won for years and beating some good players (along with his archrival) sure looks like he is determined to give it all this year and try to win some slam(s) and/or no. 1 spot.

Filo V.
03-18-2012, 11:09 PM
Anyway, the match was predictable. Roger played well and Isner was affected by the conditions and didn't have any answers to Roger's effective returning and Roger moving him around the court with his forehand. Isner tried to be aggressive at times but Roger's defensive skills flustered him. Too many central balls that allowed Roger to dictate, serve not lethal as usual, an all-around mediocre performance, but great week regardless. Roger's just so difficult to ace with his supreme timing and his block returns and once they got into points it was all Roger. Awesome job winning the title here when most didn't predict he could translate his hot form to slower HC and after the struggles in his matches with Raonic and Bellucci. Hopefully he keeps this up in Miami.

Darth Rog used the very clever Sith force skill of Delayed Troll, by using all the subtlety of a chainsaw in suggesting the umpires should be penalising nadal for his obvious and repeated disrespect of the laws of the game...

it would appear that not only was nadal consumed by his anger in losing, but the umpires have been totally seduced by the darkness that deceives the world into believing that it is beautiful - federer is very aware of the power he wields outside of the court now...

first set a bit nervous, especially towards the end when he wasted a few set point before closing the deal, thanks also to a lucky shank that lobbed isner

second set total domination but Isner looked spent. Not a good match overall from the american, he was always in the backfoot in the rallies and made too many UEs, but also thanks to Federer setting the pace.

Isner served at 75% but Federer could return many of them especially from the middle of the first set

The more I see matches where Layhani is umpire the more I understand how overrated he has been. But he has this aura of indubitableness and players tend to accept his decisions without challenging

So, for Roger to overtake Rafa right after Miami, he needs to win the whole thing there and also Rafa needs to fall before the Final.

Roger was simply too good today!!! :D After he got through that first service game, he never let Isner into another one. His serve was awesome (except in the breaker), and his ground game was vintage (especially in the second set). It is amazing how he was able to neutralize Isner's big serve, and he even had more aces than the big man.

Congratulations on the third consecutive title of the year, 4th IW, 19th Master title, and 73rd title. :bigclap:

Hopefully the GOAT can keep it up!!

It was a good tournament by Isner, he had a great win against the number 1 player, and he got into the top 10. Losing to Federer in a final is nothing to be ashamed of.

Djokovic at peak is not a better 1st serve returner than Fed. I'd rate Fed as much better first serve returner which has been all through his career. Maybe you need to see his prime years to understand that. However, Djokovic is a better 2nd serve returner than Fed - always has been and will still be. This is because he is more aggressive on the return unlike Federer who prefers to chip the ball in almost 90% of the time to start out the point. This strategy obviously worked for Federer in his early prime years because he was much better off the ground than all almost all his contemporaries and Federer was faster too. Now Federer is slower and may sometimes gamble on the second serve but he doesn't really threaten anyone on the second serve most times. This may actually be part of the reason he struggled last year with Djokovic. So, take out your OBVIOUS bias about Fed which you have been spewing for the long time and give credit where due.

Further, Isner served as high as he did yesterday - almost 75% but lost. Why? Because Federer frustrated him. Isner opted initially not to go for too much faster serves because Federer eats those up easily. He mixed it up enough with kicks, spins and fast ones just to keep Fed guessing which worked. The reason why Djokovic lost yesterday while Fed won today was whenever Djokovic had rallies against Isner's serve, he was too passive, expecting an error. Further, Djokovic hit many balls back to the middle against Isner unlike Fed who hit the balls more to the Isner backhand. If Djokovic had been a little bit more aggressive in the rallies and pinned Isner to the backhand, he would have won. Infact, he nearly did win if not for the tiebreaks - he won more points all in all. So, please give credit where it is due. I know it sucks for you when Federer does what you never expect him to do anymore for his age. What goes around come around. Your favorites will soon be 30 and we will see how they perform when they are at that age.

I love Roger, but some of his extreme stans here freak me out and seem really cultish.

You are only fooling yourself. Everyone knows you do not like Roger. There is no need to pretend. I do not like Nadal's game and never will. I think he is ok as a person although he is beginning to act rude of late to Roger. But that is between both of them. But I am not going to pretend that I like his game. He has one of the best defensive games in the history of tennis - if not the best. He is mentally tough almost all the times and uses a lot of gamesmanship (which I don't like) to get into his opponents head. His staple or base game is effective over 90% of the time so he wins almost as much percentage wise against the field.

But as a whole, his attacking game is pitiful at best. And without Fed, there is no Nadal. Yes, I said that. It is true. He won 6 slams against Fed of the ten he has. He got his aura from beating the best ever tennis player and for competing against him at all odds. So, if you like that about him fine. But he is no Roger - never has and never will be. And please stop about his humility. Neither Rog or Nadal is humble. Rarely are champions ever humble - it is part of what makes them what they are.

I highly doubt Miami will be that windy. And chances are he is going to have to deal with a hungry Djoker and Nadal if he wants to win it. No freakin ISNER in the finals this time

Typical excuses, Mr. Sampras. Djokovic and Nadal were not hungry this week.... whatever floats your boat. We'll see in less than a couple of weeks. If Nadal loses again, I bet there will another explanation from you - maybe he go a call from his mum to lose to Federer or he was bribed to allow Fed to win. Give credit where it is due.

Hmm. Wonder what Wertheim is trying to say with that.

Good win for Sickerer, completely confused, surprised and elated that he won this title.:confused: This victory is even more confusing/surprising in light of how he was thinking of pulling out, was ill throughout various matches, had to contend with the nastiest draw and some adverse conditions.

Yes, because they all CHOOSE the rival and the weather, those two factors totally make the titles less valid...

There is a fair argument to be made that OG in doubles is comparable to Gold in Singles. The Olympics is the only place where the gulf between the prestige of doubles and singles isnt much, unlike other tournaments. Of course, I am sure Fed would love a singles Gold at Wimbledon-Olympics this year coz I am certain he identifies himself as a singles player first and foremost. Hope he can do it! :rocker2:

How the hell did Connors win freaking everything? omg :worship: There is zero chance any of Connors records will even be touched. Who cares about Roger Federer wn Connors has 8 titles???? Almost2x as much aas Fed
Connors was one of the best ever, played for a very long time, and played many small events.

For example, Connors won a career high 15 events in 1974. He won Wimbledon, USO and AO, but was banned from RG. His other titles and the size of the draw:

Roanoke: 16
Little Rock: 32
Birmingham: 32
Salisbury: 64
Hampton: 64
Salt Lake City: 32
Tempe: 32
Manchester: 16
Indianapolis: 64
Los Angeles: 64
London: 32
Johannesburg: 32

At the time, the tour and players were not unified as today under ATP.

Absolutely fantastic, and never expected. At least not by me.
What an amazing start of 2012. Rog :yeah:

Kudos to Isner, too. He kept pace all throughout the first set but couldn't capitalize on his chances, mostly because his serving wasn't as good as it was in the match against Djoko. Still, great tournament for him too and I hope he'll keep up this level of play for a while to come. :)

For the remainder of his tennis career, whether or not Fed will take home a singles gold may not be important. How he is able to help thousands of poor children in Africa alone is worth more than all the golds in the world.

now without joke.when federer is in this kind of form nobody can hurt him.john played great tournament and tennis of his life but he gave everything in SF against djokovic.difference between federer and nadal is now i think 800 or 900 points.if federer keeps playing like this he will be no.2 before RG.COME ON ROGER
Your first post in this thread has been quoted repeatedly so I'll just give some advice instead: when one is still new to a big forum like this one and with few total posts, if you write something so ridiculous - especially without a smilie like ;) or :p to hint you are joking - people will assume you are serious. Even on a site like this this where idiocy and stupidity flourish, that post stood out to the extent that I had to give a bad rep, which I very rarely do.

Now if you had posted the one above first instead, the fallout from the first one could have been greatly minimized or even avoided altogether because there would have been something else recent to compare it with. Unfortunately, for the majority who came to the thread soon after it was made, the first post is what will stick in their memory  (BTW I speak from experience, having made what I thought to be a joke on another forum in my first or second post - only to be banned immediately with no further recourse.)

Fed may have peaked for the season already, but I don't care. Any title win of his these days - no matter how big or small - tastes sweet, because you just don't take them for granted anymore. Roger :hatoff:

Quoted for truth :) Not that I ever took them completey for granted before but Fed has usually made winning look so effortless for so long that now, when it is more evident how much talent and work it really takes - plus, admittedly, a little luck on occasion - a title win like this one that even many of his most rabid fans would consider unexpected becomes more meaningful in a way than other wins earlier in his career.

Neither Rog or Nadal is humble. Rarely are champions ever humble - it is part of what makes them what they are.

Quoted for even more truth, especially since it is less obvious.
