Fed's ability to choke against Nadull never seems to end.

Should have crushed Rafito 6-3 6-2

Nadal seemed to be extremely disinterested. Didn't bother tracking down a lot of balls, barely any show of emotion and just seemed to have checked out after the 2nd break in the 1st set. Maybe he was drunk

Rafa came alive after going down a double break, but usually, it's too little too late. He broke once, but the mess from before couldn't be undone.

The rain delay on MP though

Not the first time Roger ever played in tough conditions. It's a shame the final will be such a servefest.

I thought Federer had a great shot so the win wasn't surprising, but how well he played was fantastic and certainly a bit surprising. He played pretty much just as well as he did when they last met a few months in London. Nadal played OK, he was strangely out of sorts mentally, but I think that was mostly due to the fact that Federer played amazing. Maybe he was disappointed because he squandered the two break points in the very first game. Federer had the perfect game plan and never deviated even after some poor points and the small rain delay. Nadal tried to be really consistent and try his usual tactics to attack Federer's backhand, but he was just not missing and was so aggressive. A little slip at the end squandering one break of serve, but didn't matter in the end. It was ironic as Nadal was the one mentally poor today and missing his break point chances.

Nadal using the bathroom right before Federer tried to serve out the match the second time?

What a dramatic ending. Rain delay when Federer has match point on his serve. What a mentally fucking strong head to serve that very last serve!

Either way, I think Roger has a fantastic chance in the next few months to get some steam before the French Open and Wimbledon. He looks extra motivated this year.

Strange match, not very good quality, but good drama. rafa was abysmal for a long part of the match and gave away the match. He started playing like himself at the end of it when he was already a break down. Federer chocked a little bit but he deserved to win. Sometimes he was unplayable.

for his two losses in 2012, first he beat Rafa, and next up Isner (who still along with Querrey has to play Rafa and M. Lopez in the doubles final later tonight, unless there's a walkover on either end).

Federer handled the wind beautifully. Unsurprisingly serving was very difficult (windy as well as 12C), but he was so easily dominant in the rallies.

Nadal was shite, barely hit a clean ball all match. Happens sometimes when it's windy - he was really poor vs Nalb for the first set too, wasn't really on his game until the third set there. Add on the wind completely throwing his timing, and he never got in the match today.

The end was interesting, Fed tried to choke a double break lead, but Nadal really blew it.

LinkMage loosing his marbles in livescore thread, but yet starting the match thread was NID...maybe even more NID than the bathroom break Rafa took before Fed served for the match or Rafa complaining about the conditions on match point.

Somehow Fed held on. I'm genuinely surprised that he didn't choke but he was the better player for most of the match. Handled the conditions well.

Good chance to get revenge against Isner in the finals.

Seems to me like Nadal was hitting deeper and flatter at the very start of the match but then changed it to moonballing and running the ball down (his well known plan B) after the first couple of games.

Anyhow, credit where its due. Roger played a great match and really kept it together whereas his opponent did not.

Hope the final goes smoother, weather wise.

A weird match.

I'm not sure how ANYONE can say Nadal played a good match. The difference of Nadal from the middle of the first set through the middle of the second set compared to the end of the second set was night and fucking day. Rafa wasn't good at all, he was flustered, the cool conditions took sting out of his forehand and he couldn't handle the conditions and landed balls inside the baseline regularly. Terrible performance overall, but a lot of that is attributed to Fed.

Fed played great until the end. Had the CORRECT tactics today :yeah: Stood on the baseline and refused to back up, took balls early, took returns early, didn't allow Rafa's FH to get up high on his shoulder, served well, used the forehand to move Nadal out of position on his backhand side and open up the court with topspin rather than try to hit through Nadal. He used the net effectively and took advantage of short balls. He did everything right until the end where his serve went off and he got passive. He deserved to win and I'm glad he finally closed it out. If he plays like this consistently he can beat Rafa regularly, although the conditions helped a lot. He's on a roll and confident Roger is beautiful to watch.

Federer was unplayble for most of the match.

Nadal's confidence was shaken from the very beginning. When does Nadal ever double fault. Also it was cold and rainy.

Macbrother
03-18-2012, 02:12 AM
Roger surprisingly sticking to and executing a smart gameplan here. Hammered away at the Nadal backhand drawing weak replies and errors; Nadal for most of the match played right into this, predictably trying to peck away at Federer's backhand side allowing him to run around it and control rallies with his forehand. Late in the match Nadal successfully changed it up attacking instead the Federer forehand, but it was just case of too little, too late. Federer nabs his first outdoor HC victory over Rafa in quite some time.

btw, the OTR forehand Federer hit at *0-15 1-1 in the 2nd was a bit nostalgic, didn't think the old guy had many more of those in him.

03-18-2012, 02:13 AM
The mini rain delay provided a sort of Mortal Kombat "Finish Him" moment.

Anyway, good from Fed, didn't make too many errors and BH varied from excellent to reliable. Nadal was not good, refusing to be aggressive at all. When Fed's BH is holding up he needs to do something different. His own BH continues its implosion, Fed exploited it well, anythng short to Nadal's BH is a free point these days, he either nets/shanks it or gives up a weak slice.

Fed should soon be at number 2. Rafa will have to actually start making allowances for his decline and change some things, instead of just talking about what he needs to do in pressers but then not doing it on the court.

Yes. But this match did show us that in a 3 out of 5 sets match, Rafa would be able to turn it around. When he got aggressive in that 2nd set, I thought he was going to come back all the way. Roger still plays crappy break points

03-18-2012, 02:17 AM
Cool windy conditions saved Mr. Federer today. Nadal's topspin was nullified. His ball wasn't bouncing high at all. Plus, Federer's aggression was perfect for the wind as opposed to Nadal's looping topspin attempts. And Federer executed extremely well for almost 1 set and half. This made it appear as though Nadal was slower and weak, similar to the WTF. Not really the case. As soon as Federer's level dropped a bit, Nadal was able to be better.
That's pretty much it. Oh well, my prediction in this one failed :) I had counted on warmer weather.

It was clear after the Nalbandian match that Nadal's game is a mess right now and an in form Fed would beat him.

I thought this in the back of my head, but I didn't think Fed would be the one who would handle the conditions better. I based my prediction almost solely on the conditions. I'm surprised in that regard it was Nadal who essentially blew up because the conditions weren't good, and Roger gained confidence as the match went onward.

Amazing play from Federer for about 75% of the match. Another 10% was still above average and 5% was around average. Anyway, this adds up quite clearly to a straight sets win over Nadal.

I don't understand how some people can say Nadal played mediocre - Federer was playing so outstanding that Nadal simply couldn't display anything great. Often, it's the other way round, and hence Federer appears to be playing mediocre. Fact of the matter is that on grass and hard courts, Federer is slightly better than Nadal (probably much better on indoor hard courts), while on clay, Nadal is significantly better than Federer.

I think Fed will win RG or Wimbledon.

Nole is too good at HC slams now.

Attack the Nadal backhand. Gee, I wonder why Federer and his team didn't think of this before.

he needed paul annacone to train him for that. all this years, i have forgiven fed on that. it's instinct that drives him to rafas forehand, and rafas backhand wasnt that weak before, it just started to become a weakness 2 years ago

Tennis lost.

This win has a huge asterisk over it because the conditions converted the court into basically an indoor court with a wind machine in it.

Federer usually wins their indoor encounters as Nadal's topspin is suppressed, but as soon as these guys meet on a normal sunny high-bouncing surface (ie. every slam) - Federer will be routined once again.

Nadull's from Majorca ffs. He's used to playing in windy conditions.

Indeed, and he's played well in it before, notably the final vs Murray here in 2009 (which made tonight's look like a light breeze, that was 60mph stuff, insane).

Yet, it clearly threw his game yesterday at times, and today he was hopeless.

Sometimes happens like that. Ultimately it's the same conditions for them both, and on average the wind is going to hurt Federer more than Nadal, as the more aggressive player. It just didn't work that way today.

blind breed are a lost bunch, hercules.....nadal's going to deliver the turkey win today and that's something which they cannot stomach.....it's already showing clear enough.....they are desperate to avoid it but it's inevitable.....

What an awesome match by Roger!!!! :) He played great for most of the match. He showed his mental toughness throughout the match, especially in the last game when he was down 15-30, and hitting an ace after the mini delay. He handled the conditions really well, unlike Nadal.

Nadal seemed very confused out there, because of the weather, and Federer's great play. He started to play better after a set and a half, but it was too late.

Good luck in the final, Federer!! Let's win it! :)

I think that is the best way for him to win any tournament is to struggle early on against lesser opponents. It really feels like he saves his best for when he needs it most. I mean during his peak years, he was so good at this I thought. Playing not really anything spectacular in the early rounds only to finish off with lights out tennis.

Maybe this cold he supposedly has (blowing his nose on court so maybe he really has one) is making him concentrate a bit extra.

That was a result of Nadal playing like he had nothing to lose and Fed tightening up a bit which is understandable. Very hard to keep up that intensity all along. Fed did it all match long and the insurance break he got in the 2nd set as a result of it paid off.

Precisely Mr. Arkin. WTF at O2 is not a fast surface by any stretch of the imagination, but it is certainly low bouncing and gives Nadal less time to get to the ball, and makes him appear to be slow and weak in the onslaught of a Federer barrage of attacking shots.

Mr. Federer took full advantage of the conditions today, especially in the first set and a half. I don't think Mr. Nadal could have done much better than he did. As soon as Federer's level dropped some in the middle of the second set, Nadal was right back in it, but Federer's 2 break advantage was enough until Federer picked it up again late in the match.

Rafa was obviously subpar, but it's a huge surprise to see him struggling with the wind a lot more than JesusFed today.
Hope he regroups, it was rather painful to see him getting dismantled so much today. However... it's happened the other way round at quite a few occasions too, so I guess this may well even out the scores - a (very) little bit. Rafa

the rain on match point was just long enough to make it even more epic, not too short to make it pointless, not too long to kill the atmosphere,

the ultimate climax, so fitting, what a memorable match

I always say this : nadal take adavantage of the empy beetwen past peak roger and pre-peak nole in 2008-2010 for won his titles outside clay!!!!

if in 2004-2007 more matches were been in hard and grass , the h2h would be very different , before 2008 was 6-8.....

clay in 2004-2007 was veryyy important in that h2h....

and some tards say that peak roger should lost everytime with peak nole and rafa in fast courts jajajajaja.

I love all the arrogant Fedtards in here. Remember who you have to thank for this recent victory. Nole has broken Nadal mentally, and maybe even physically. Pay your respects.

Don't worry we will. See example below.

Hilarious that secret Nadal-tards are saying Fed handled the conditions better. Nadal handles wind better than anyone out there because of the margin on his shots, he was basically given a free Indian Wells title in 2009 because of wind and people think he couldn't handle this weather

Just shows that no matter the conditions, the court, the past form, and a million other possible distractions, if Federer plays his best Nadal can do nothing :wavey:

Nadal didn't care about this Mickey Mouse event - also the conditions conspired to make it as low bouncing an outdoor HC surface can get. Almost indoor conditions with a wind machine.

The wind was also a huge asterisk, as Nadal's high trajectory over the net means his shots are more affected.

In the unanimously high bouncing, sunny, outdoor slow Grand Slams, Nadal will routine the ballet dancer once more.

I think Nadal got the virus; thus the bathroom break in the middle of the match.

Attack the Nadal backhand. Gee, I wonder why Federer and his team didn't think of this before.

he still hit plenty of well struck forehands to his backhand, he just executed to perfection a la WTF, which was even more astonishing given all the circumstances were against him here

No, Federer has always seen Nadal as his main rival. A victory over Nadal will boost him up like nothing else.
And anyway that was in 2010. The year Federer messed up more than any other in his career. :o 2012 Federer seems ultra motivated and I am sure he will make a no-show tomorrow, no matter what happens.
And after having lost to Isner in DC, he wont underestimate him either

I think this will be a good quality match, a welcome relief from the protracted mooballing that is Rafole.
Hopefully Roger pulls through.
