Is Isner better right now than Roddick has ever been?

"John Isner is better right now than Andy Roddick has ever been"

"Yes, Roddick had a major, but in an era way less than today's. Isner plays better -- serve, net, forehand, backhand, never-die"

"I agree Roddick is more accomplished than Isner. And UR right, Isner has the ease of being on way up. But Isner in tougher era"

Do you agree with Greg?

Roddick has beaten Djokovic more easily than Isner did today. Nah, stop with the Roddick bashing, Isner cant even be compared to peak Roddick.

If Isner can beat Federer/Djokovic/Nadal basically back to back there might be an argument. As of now this is a pretty dumb statement.

No

If we compare only serve, he is maybe there with prime Roddick´s serve, Roddick had the pure power-speed, John has trajectory, height, heavyness of his serve

But movement and other aspects, simply Roddick is smaller guy, he had huge FH at his prime and his movement and everything else was just superior to Isner´s - he is limited by his height of course.

Isner needs to play like this consistently for a few months, like Roddick did in the summer of 2003. Then we'll talk.

For now, he just had two sets of brilliant serving.

JediFed
03-17-2012, 10:21 PM
Erm? No.

Roddick had a slam at 21.

Isner's close to 27 right now, with one GS QF.

3 titles, and 5 finals.

Roddick did more by 19 than Isner has done in his whole career.

scoobs
03-17-2012, 10:22 PM
Nope. Roddick has had the consistency over a period of many years. 1 slam win, 4 finals, between 2003 and 2009.

It's a ridiculous statement.

Let's see Isner do this sort of match, ONE match, at the back end of a Grand Slam. THEN MAYBE it's worth even considering the possibility. Until then, no. It's Indian Wells SF for crying out loud.

It amazes me how even the professional pundits can get completely carried away by a result.

He needs to take a few deep breaths.

Roddick's peak is far above Isner, so no. That said, Isner is better when it comes to personality and is a treat to watch when he's in form, unlike Roddick.

Also, Isner in Big 4? Murray says hello.

Not until he proves he can do it at Slams. Which is a problem for a man his size...he is physically depleted by the time the first week ends if he gets that far. His body just cannot handle that many best-of-5 matches in a row.

that's a joke, Isner right now is nowhere even close to as good as ROddick has been. he has at moments been practically unbeatable, nearly that way at Wimbledon in 2009 and periods in 2003/2004 he was just amazing. whoever said Isner is as good is just a tool who does not know what they speak of

Djokovic 2011 yeah but Djokovic 2007/2008 no way. Roddick at prime is extremely underrated and the only reason his talent at the time and the great height of his talent was ignored is mainly due to the fact Federer was so often across the net and on the front of newspapers.

when the best player of all time is in your generation it makes you look worse typically. Roddick at his prime was insane from the baseline with powerful groundstrokes and a pretty great net game- add that to his insane serve (arguably one of the best of all time) and it's clear that Isner has no chance against prime Roddick in any fashion and even Djokovic outside of 2011 would probably lose. I think prime Roddick can beat anyone but prime Federer and it just is an unlucky circumstance, Roddick's career, that he came to heights right when Federer did

rodholio has done nothing on davis cup clay.
rodholio beat no top 10 player in davis cup competition.
rodholio never played 5 sets on clay vs. nadal and djoker... rodholio choked on set point before he could hurt a teen nadal on clay.
rodholio rarely won a match against murray, nadal, federer and djokovic the last 2 years.

isner has never choked 3 match points against federer.

isner never lost 4 set points and 0-40 opportunities against federer.

isner never lost 17 break point chances in a federer match.

isner wins.

Djokovic beat Roddick in 2 sets in 2007 Montreal. Lost to Roddick in Dubai 2008 and beat him in USO that year.

Yes. I'm a Roddick fan and I've followed the majority of his career but the answer is yes. Isner has been on a steady incline ever since RG last year.

He took Nadal to 5 there which has rarely ever been done. He then won Newport and made deep runs in Washington and Atlanta. Won another title in Winston Salem, reached the quarters of USO and the semis of Paris

Follow that up with wins over Federer and Djokovic in 2012? It may not last long and of course he'll never duplicate the longevity of Roddick but as of right now you have to say he's playing better tennis than Roddick ever has.

Roddick lost to Federer 8 times in a slam (1 QF, 3 SF and 1 F) so if Federer didn't ever play tennis Roddick could probably win at least 3 or 4 slams, specially Wimbledon 09

Houstonko
03-18-2012, 05:54 AM
Isner groundstrokes are horrible and he can only win 7-6 for any set whereas Roddick don't need 7-6, he can win 6-3 against anyone, Federer/Nadal/Djokovic/Murray included. Also his serve is only good 'cause it bounces high for his height similarly to karlovic but karlovic is better in this aspect. Once the serve is read he gets broken. Roddick outpowers people.

Thats one difference, the rest about consistency in slams no need to debate.

roddick was lucky to beat an injured opponent in the 3rd set tiebreak in 2006 cincinnati and a sickly djoker in australia 2009. otherwise, he would've had no top 5 ranking since 2006.
isner is far superior on clay and indoor hardcourts and moves patiently and lasts 5-6 hours on court.

roddick is mince meat in 3 hour matches. there rarely was a plan b for him because his only strategy involved 1) harrassing linesmen & umpire,
2) insulting opponents
3) act really nice later on to make himself look great

Isner is far better. Isner has 3 big weapons. Serve, forehand and net play. Roddick has only a serve and yet it is inferior to Isner's. Roddick's groundstrokes and volleys suck. Roddick is a class B retriever. Isner plays offense and is capable of taking a match out of Nadal's, Djokovic's or Federer's hands. Roddick can NEVER claim to control a match against any of these 3 players.

Isn't it a little too early to be making such a determination?

EDIT: Well if it's "right now" vs. "entire career", I'd have to say no.

Roddick haters unite in this thread. Zzz, I hate how much hate Roddick gets. Pretty unfair. Just because HE wasn't exactly the next Sampras, doesn't mean he is a total failure, yet no one is ragging on other true one-slam wonders like they do with Roddick.

Sure, maybe not now consistently, but he used to pound that ball to oblivion 2001-2004, and there have been several matches since then when he has shown us his best like IW/Miami 2010, Dubai 2008, Cincinnati 2006, among others.

Isner has never had any pressure on him; no weight of expectations. Whenever he was coming up against a top 10 -- or even top 15 -- player, it was generally assumed he would lose. It's easier to play when no one expects you to win. Now he's made it to the top ten and recorded some big wins. Now we'll see how he handles it when people expect him to produce better results on a consistent basis.

In other words, way too early for these declarations.

As of this season.

Big John Isner

Serve: 10/10
ROS: 5/10
Power: 9/10
Forehand: 8/10
Backhand: 6/10
Net Game: 6/10
Movement: 6/10
Fitness: 5/10
Mental Strength: 7/10
Tactics: 3/10
Overall: 71/100

Summary: Big John like A-Rod uses a simple game plan, outserve or outpower his opponents.

vs.

A-Rod

Serve: 8/10
ROS: 5/10
Power: 9/10
Forehand: 8/10
Backhand: 6/10
Net Game: 3/10
Movement: 3/10
Fitness: 5/10
Mental Strength: 7/10
Tactics: 2/10
Overall: 59/100

Summary: Like Big John, A-Rod uses a simple gameplan. Outpower or outserve his opponents but since he sucks nowadays, he can't really do that.
