Completely outplayed...especially in the 3rd. Djoker relied on passive defenses and Isner did a little defensive looping but attacked for the most part. He was at the net a lot as well.

He took some huge gambles. Sometimes they paid off, sometimes they didn't. Isner came to play.

Wanted to root "for tennis" but Djoko reminded me how little I liked him with that finger celebration in the third set.

Isner executed the only game plan he had during the 1st set, and the latter half of the 3rd set: go big on the serve and return, hit strong off the forehand, get to net decisively...and thus set yourself up for being able to do that during the TB. All you need there is two points off return, since Djoko will eventually get one back.

Just a great match.

Djokovic didn't give this match away, Isner stole it from him by playing great in the third set and adding an insanely clutch tiebreak.

Hopefully MTF will celebrate John rather than crap all over Nole. John Isner has improved his game so much in the past few years that it's not funny. Isner was serving great in both TB´s. Nole was i think better player, in rallies he was better, he won more points and much more on return. Isner´ serve and FH howewer right now is the scariest thing in tennis and i like his chances against RAfa- i assume Roger cna´t beat him on this slow high bouncing courts, and Rafa will be outserved and destroyed much easier than Nole, who i think should have won this match.

Isner will CRUSH Nadal tomorrow. Djokovic would be Isner's toughest test, and he passed. Nadal's high bouncing shots and second serve will not be treated kindly tomorrow, and I say this as a Nadal fan. USA is back. He is not a serve-bot. His movement is respectable and his forehand is incredible. More importantly, he is mentally TOUGH unlike so many others who would have crumbled in the tense conditions today. Both players with a lot more winners than errors.

Isner on serve and forehand brillant.
Djokovic in defense (as always) very good,

I wouldn't even mind if that happens. He's a nice guy and deserves it. I'm never a big fan of huge servers but he's engaging and that makes a difference - he's got a great forehand, comes to the net & shows some emotion out there. It makes you want to root for him. Raonic needs to look at Isner and learn how it's done.

Just awesome win for the guy. He could beat either Fed or Rafa tomorrow - should be a cracker.

And he has the doubles final vs Rafa tonight to come!

Just wasn't much Nole can do. Isner keeps that attack and serving up.. Thats put Nole's game all out of whack. Its not like playing against a generic, weaker serving grinder.

03-17-2012, 09:01 PM
The strategy of playing defensive tennis against UE John was the right one. Initially. It became clear that in order to win, more offense was needed as Shorty's UEs dropped dramatically. Djokovic showed flashes of offensive flair at 4-4 in the third, sending isner corner to corner in true pigeon form, but soon started to play defensive again. Hopefully we see more of the offensive djokovic who thrilled the tennis world in 2007/2008. I'm sure he'll adjust. Today was a good wakeup call that defense, endurance and low UEs are not always enough. Sometimes you have to take your opponent by the short curlies and show him who's boss.

You really need to watch more matches by Isner without your coloured glasses. And this comes from a fan of Djokovic.

I think Djokovic's days of winning multiple slams are over. He just does not seem as good this year as he was last year.

I don`t think so.....

in a 3 set match guys like isner can win perfectly , the same isner forced nadal in rg to 5 sets and defeated federer in his home too.

very dangerous players for a 3 set match.

Isner is probably the most intelligent player on the tour, and one of the strongest mentally. He works his game around his weaknesses, plays in a very clever way with what mother nature gave him and stay on the match even when it seems he'll have no chance. Great match.

All the "tennis wins" comments for ISNER? Come on, people, no matter how much you hate Djokovic, I don't think Isner exactly embodies real tennis
Moonballing+ occasional random winner+big serving+overheads

Is this for real? Moonballing? What moonballing? :superlol: Yes, all those Isner's moonball approaches to the net and moonball FH winners... Of course, if by "moonballing" you mean those occasional few points, where he had to play defense, it is understandable that he has to hit some loopier balls to get back into the position. It is not easy for such a big guy to move in defense, although he really does it very well for his height.

whatever fun djokovic is having in matches with nadal seems to be over finally......djokovic fans can trust me on this......nadal would have had him this time.....

like i said before, those 6 meetings last year happened way too quickly when nadal was off and djokovic was red hot and nadal finally found a way back into the rivalry with that oz final after some thought process in the off season......what follows next is ruthless intensity in miami, montecarlo, rome and french open and i doubt djokovic will be able to handle all that......

Like this loss isn't enough, right? :bigcry:

Seriously now, that guy you are quoting isn't EVEN a Djokvic fan, from what I remember....

Hey everyone: BigJohn just gave the green light to bring up posts and comments from else where to different threads.

I read on the ESPN boards that some fans still think that he has mono and possibly SARS and will be the culprit of his loss should he lose today. I guess it's OK to bring that post into the match thread (because I desperately searched and failed to find it in the post-match thread).

Can the mods please ban this OBVIOUS troll?

Well done John :yeah:

So Djokovic had a very good year and as expected can't back it up. And his tards already called him greater than Fed

His fastest serve of the match was the one he hit on matchpoint! Priceless..

Nice jinx.

So let me get this straight. You responded to a post from one thread.....IN ANOTHER THREAD (and still haven't responded to that post in ITS relevant thread).

I know it just KILLS you that that post wasn't made in here

So what's the next best thing: drag in in here and hope that everyone will consider it relevant :stupid:

It just kills you that you looked stupid in this whole exchange we are having. Like right here:

For him? Yes.

Can't find what he desires in this thread, so has to scavenge old threads to make it relevant :stupid:

That thread is from today, and the comment was made after the match...

I am sorry if I made you look stupid there, but I am right about this and the more you split hair to try to save face, the more pathetic you sound.

Credit to Isner, amazing match for him...

Novak lost this match at 5-4 first set, open with DF, short ball in the middle at 30-30, and stupid call at break point... if he served out that set, result will be 6-4 6-4, or something like that...

John in TB...141, 142, 143 m/h...incredible, Novak couldnt do much in that part of the game...

No, I don't get cross at posters who attack Murray. I get cross at posters who attack him when he nothing to do with anything I'm talking about. When people start badmouthing Murray, I don't attack their players, I defend mine. If Murray had something to do with what I was talking about, then by all means attack him if you want to get in a war with me, but don't attack him when has nothing to do with what I'm saying. It's just a cheap way to try and annoy me, and it doesn't work.

Well, it was an accumilation of personal attacks and trolling over a couple of years, so it was bound to happen sooner or later.

Not at all.

Who cares? Fed is an old man now way past his prime, when joker will be his age he'll be happy playing challengers (or maybe acting in some serbian soap operas).

Here's how it works, BigJohn. I would respond to this post in HERE...and not drag it to the post match thread like you pathetically did.

Well played Isner!!! He will be world #8 in the rankings next Monday. Such a clutch TB machine. :worship:

Full respect to him, many other players would have folded under the pressure of playing against the current world #1 in tiebreaks, 20 aces served against a quality returner like Nole.

Nole, he really dug himself a hole in this match by not winning the 1st set :o, he was serving for it, but served a DF, and then he made a bad challenge, not to mention the DF at 4-5 in the 1st set TB  I noticed Nole was serving three-quarter pace 1st serves in the 3rd set so that Isner wouldn't attack his 2nd serve, but in a TB where anything can happen, that's exactly what happened, one missed 1st serve and Isner nailed the FH return winner to go up 4-2. Hope Nole at least gets to the final in Miami.

Hope Isner wins the title, would be great to see someone other than the Top 4 winning a MS1000 title.

It was very strange because Djokovic usually estimates balls on his own side very well, he isn't delusional.

He completly lost concentration in that game, a DF, a lob attemp and he stoped the play and chalenged because he though his shot will go out (btw it didn't, it went right into the corner). He knew that John's shot hit the line even before the hawkeye result on the screen. This just shows how intense game is tennis, just a small dip in focus and bang - it costs you the match, otherwise it would have been a routine win in straights as everyone expected.

Big win for Big John. Novak played good except in tie breaks. He would probably win without that challenge in 1st set. He gave away point where he was in favored position. John served out of this world and was a favorite in tie breaks, Novak too nervous, bad serving.
