Roger seems a bit off but got the job done against this kid who didn't do badly TBH

That level won't be enough against Raonic though.

1st set was Unforcerer.
I """might""" understand that, if you tell me Federer was getting himself into the court, the speed. It's the first match there, so I can understand that.
2nd set was pretty good overall, no so many UEs.

I think if Fed's FH is okay, he could get far this tournament.

Roger is starting to hit so many forehands ugly. Almost over his head like Nadal :o

Not really. Roger's shotmaking was really good, just like Dubai final, but he seemed a little slow and sloppy with the movement. I do hope its not the virus he has apparently got
Good first match considering the circumstances and the shitty surface.
I cant see him advancing past the semis anyway
But if he is really not well - and he looked sickly out there, he shouldnt risk it for IW.
Hopefully he will do the assessment with the off-day tomorrow and take the intelligent decision. Though I dont doubt he will show up against Raonic unless it gets worse. Roger wont want to withdraw twice in 3 months after having done it once his whole career before:o

Well, rumours are out that Fed got the bug as well.
Hope not of course, but as he had to take a potty break in between sets... :scared:
Anyways, we'll soon find out. Hopefully he just looked a bit slow and sloppy because of the court. He won't retire unless he really needs to do so methinks.

Easy-peasy job for Fed, but of course this youngster was not in his league. Yet, perhaps, as I liked what I saw from him. Despite the one-way traffic mirrored in the score, I think this Kudla indeed has some talent.

Kudla has a nice backhand down the line, noticed it against Hass at the AO. Too easy for viruserer

I would like to see the 2nd set stats.
Because I remember the first set he had a negative W/UE ratio.

Nadal doesn't mishit that many forehands. occasionally an overhead maybe??? not that common for him.... the backhand on the other hand, sometimes that one is pretty misdirected

Federer is looking a bit off but Kudla has big potential. he has great service but i just worry that Dennis doesn't manuever the court well enough or have any variety whatsoever. also he is very awkward when a ball is hit quickly to his backhand; not good at adjusting to surprise

one step at a time, roger....glad he got through the match even though he wasnt feeling his best..normally he doesnt take the court if he's not up to par so i gotta assume he was feeling ok to play...but i still say his color wasnt right...raonic next and this one i am looking forward too...i dont think they have ever played each other, so it should be interesting.

But the good news for Roger is that this kind of match could trouble a lot of other good players if they are not 100%, but Roger's insane amount of finesse and variety still allowed him to completely dominate this match. I am surprised that more people have not noticed the lesson one can learn from this match. Using plan B is important if one has the talent to play different styles.

Uhh, I didn't see Federer mishitting almost at all tonight! Quite amazing given he was a bit slow in the feet.
I saw maybe one or two shanked backhands the whole match, and obviously a few normal errors.

He's hitting with a lot of spin, and playing patiently. Seems to be working well.

just hope he was air lifted to hospital when the match ended

saw this whole match, wanted to see what kudla was about after giving roddick a scare. He has a lot of deficiencies in his game and I have serious doubts he'll ever crack the top 100, and roddick should be embarrassed.

Roger looked really lifeless and sick tonight, half-assing his serves and shots. He could've easily lost tonight to a competent opponent. If he doesn't get rid of this bug, he will lose to Milos.

I dont get why people are saying Federer will just show the white flag just like that. Least of all Federer fans. He has withdrawn from a tournament twice in the last what 14, 15(?) years. Roger has a lot of respect to this thing called commitment. I am certain Fed wouldnt have withdrawn from Doha earlier this year if AO wasnt right around the corner.
Thats not the case here and apparently, it may be a 24-48 hr thing. Even if it is not, unless it gets a lot worse, I have no doubt Roger will turn up next round. He has some faults, but one thing spotless about Roger Federer is his love and respect for the game and the fans. He doesnt quit just like that.

I'm sure he'll be fine for the next round hope he recovers quick!:yeah:

Would be a shame if he can't play, but if his condition gets worse, then there's not much sense to be on the court.

Why does he not just retire and give some LL chanse to shine?

He is an old man (in tennis terms) playing with sickness on his worst surface with a horror draw, he should take a break, Nadal never plays in Paris so there Nadal actually schedules better than Federer.

2 master series Federer should ignore: Indian Wells and Miami.

Even Monte Carlo is better than these terrible tournaments, Monte Carlo atleast leads somewhere (RG). Ofcourse playing Estoril or some other small tournament would be even better.

There is a reason Federer is where he is and we are where we are.

When you are a little sick or a little injured, you play through the fucking pain and the sickness. You don't withdraw like a wuss like many in this thread are saying. Unless you are deathly ill on your deathbed, or are in so much pain you are barely able to get out of bed, then MAYBE you withdraw.

A little bug? A little niggle injury? Give me a fucking break, people.

Smart scheduling is also a reason why Federer is where he is, now playing 2 fast master 500 would be very smart if he was to not play atleast one of the incredibly slow Indian Wells and Miami 1000 tournaments. Playing through sickness on a tournament that leads nowhere and when he is 31 and has played through 2 tournaments in 3 weeks, that is not very smart.

I would rather have him play more claycourt tournaments than 2 before RG, actually that leads somewhere while these slow hardcourt tournaments are dead ends.

The general stomach virus in Indian Wells is a 24-48 hr thing according to the tournament spokesman,

but Federer said that his virus is not that one, it's a virus in his family, everybody has it, he's the least concerned.

Fed was fine practicing on Friday, and he still managed to thrash Kudla despite this illness, so I'm not too worried. The fact that IW/Miami are spread out makes it easier for the top players, he'll be fine.
