I like Michi's draw a lot, but not too fond of Andi Beck's draw. Michael should make the SF at least, but Fabrice Martin can ace his way to a win against him potentially............hopefully Goodall takes him out.

Andi Beck with Bozo in R1 then Copil/Marchenko R2 will be difficult. But if he gets through that, I think he has a great shot at the finals.

Well Michi is going to lose, but I'm not really even upset. Clearly, something was wrong here. Looks totally sluggish and unfit, and lacks the energy he's known to play with. Whatever happened to him has sadly cost him this title, which I think he would have won. Now, basically, it's wide open.

Fischer can lose to anyone and Gorcic has the serve. So in a tiebreak situation, he's at a disadvantage because of his lack of weapons. No real surprise he lost, IMO.

Berrer is ridiculous. Why is he complaining, the faster surfaces should suit him, and also the surface is the same for him and his opponent, so obviously the opponent was better.

Filo V.
03-13-2012, 01:01 AM
Berrer actually likes the court a little slower than this because he takes big windups on hit shots, and because of his heavy-footedness. He needs a little time on the ball to play the way he wants to play. Also needs a little time to be able to get to the net if he wants to attack forward. Ultra quick courts don't give him that time. And he's really not a monster server. He's more of a percentage server who likes to slides balls in the corners, and then either put away the easy return, sneak into the net and hit a volley, or get a short ball down the middle and attack. So these courts really do not suit his game.

Deathless Mortal
03-13-2012, 01:23 AM
He does have a big serve, and likes to play serve & volley, so it should suit him. The fact that he's a big slow elephant is his problem.

Filo V.
03-13-2012, 01:31 AM
Yeah, I agree they should conceivably suit him. I don't think serve and volley players are at their best on ultra fast courts, though, unless they have serves like Pete did. You need to be able to get to the net and close it off in an appropriate position to S&V and on an ultra fast court, and since Berrer is a slow guy, as are a lot of guys who play S&V, they often times won't get to the net quick enough.

Deathless Mortal
03-13-2012, 01:38 AM
What I primarily had in mind was that Berrer, being the type of a player that he is, should be against the whole slowing-down of the courts story, in which case complaining against the faster surfaces wouldn't really help.

Filo V.
03-13-2012, 01:45 AM
I understood what you were trying to say, thinking logically one would believe Berrer would be foolish to complain about a quick court with his style that would generally be suited to such courts, it's just that I can see why he personally wouldn't like courts that fast in reality. I guess that I should have made it more clear in that regard, I wasn't really talking about all aggressive, forward moving players, just Berrer.

Deathless Mortal
03-13-2012, 01:56 AM
Fair enough. He still should've beaten Cacic though, who is a really poor player :o

Actually I feel like I haven't played a TENNIS match. Was more like a lottery and I lost

And that's the point I think. That was my first impression too as I watched the stream. The player who will serve near 100% first Serves in will win this tournament. Everyone can win this. Absolutely unpredictable . Like a lottery.

Cacic takes the second set 7-6(5)

Neither player have much off their serves, but Cacic is feeding off the energy from the crowd and playing above his normal level. The sound off the racquet when Martin serves is sounds hard, but the rest of his game is mediocre.

Cacic takes it on third tie break, 6-7(5)7-6(5),7-6(4).

Neither player doing much on the opponents serve, although Cacic had a pretty good figures on his second serve returns, winning half the points, while going over 70% on his own second serve percentage.

Abysmal returning from Martin in the last two tiebreaks. Cacic actually has more all-around game than Martin, Martin has the better serve but that's it.

I thought that in the 5-6 game in the third set too. Martin had 15-30, and had two second serves from that point, but just banged them long. I quite liked the look of Cacic. Certainly a lower level challenger quality player at worst - higher than he's sitting now. I'd not seen him before, but I was quite impressed considering he's barely played anything but futures.

Cacic could do have some decent results on these quicker indoor courts. I don't think he's that good a player, but he's also not as bad I as expected him to be given I've seen him a couple times before and been super unimpressed, maybe top 220ish level. He's showed some game off the serve his first two matches and outplayed both Berrer and Martin from the baseline.

The crowd support hasn't hurt, either.

dont forget his age as well - he's only just turned 21. It's possible he could be improving, or have improved as is natural for any player with experience.

But hell, 220 ish wouldn't be too bad for a limited player. :)

I just wish marius would do something on his return.s he almost never gets a lead when he faces a player with a decent serve, he's always playing catch up. If he worked on his return i think he could make that jump but its always going to hold him back if he's content with things the way they are.

I think Kudry, Lajovic and Hernych are the most likely winners here, maybe Janowicz. They're the best players off their serves in the players remaining. Especially Kudry and Hernych, but if I were a betting man I'd say Kudry wins this event. He loves these fast courts and can serve with the giants.

I'm surprised you're not including Bozoljac in that - surely he has a serve to compare against any of these guys?

Semi final of Bozoljac, Brown, Kudryavtsev and Janowicz, for me.

Cacic looked like he was going to go toe to toe with Brown for the first 8 games, then cracked under pressure, serving to stay in the set.

I was going to say Bozo, but I think he's too mentally unstable to win this event because when the going gets tough, I don't see him able to do what will be required to win. Then again, I can easily see him winning it if he's just in awesome form and serving bombs without any inhibition. Depends where his mind is.

Dustin has been flying under the radar but has had a great event. Really, he can win it also. It's wide open.

Wow, Kudyavtsev having an absolute mare. He's winning 80% of first serves, but he's only got 33% first serves in. Awful.

Lajovic has broken again, leads 5-1 with serve.

Still don't think his serve is good enough to win on this surface, but he's probably the best player left in the tournament, once they get into a rally. If someone misses a lot of serves like today, he has the chance to go all the way.

I still believe it will be one of the decent returners remaining in the draw that will take the title. The poor returners are the big servers, but can they do anything on return to win the tournament here? If Lajovic keeps the serve percentage up then he'll be in a good position.

Yeah it's a good logic, and one I totally understand. The only thing is, in a one off match, it only takes one of these guys he's playing to serve clutch, and Lajovic will literally not be able to do a lot. Bozoljac has got a reasonable ground game - if his head is in the right place, it could be interesting. Brown as well.

Filo V.
03-16-2012, 02:06 PM
Kudry is starting to tee off on returns.

I agree that Lajovic isn't gonna be capable of keeping the big hitters off his serve. Both Bozo and Brown will attack it the way Kudry is starting to. These courts are fast enough where a player can serve themselves to the title. With Bozo and Dustin it's the same thing always, can they keep their heads together and consistency long enough.

Filo V.

Kudryavtsev def. Lajovic 1-6 6-3 6-1

Too much power from the Russian. Lajovic started leaking errors from about the middle of the second set onward, especially once he fell behind in the third set. Lajovic got overpowered and didn't have the ability to turn the match around. Kudry played OK the final two sets, not great but he's just on a different level.

Looked like a back/leg situation...........lower body injury. He's extremely fragile physically, too bad, his body and his mind fail him so often. Herynch has had a great week and these courts really suit his game. He's been the best returner of the event IMO, and he's been too consistent from the baseline for his opponents. 8th challenger title for Jan. I thought he played alright, not amazing, not horrible. He was the clear better player most of the match. He made some tight errors that weren't good but he controlled baseline play overall. Mertl was too hit and miss. I think Jan was nervous so he's lucky he was playing someone like Mertl today.

Filo V.

I wonder what Jan will make out of this. He's shown that he can still potentially do quite a lot of damage in challengers indoors. It's seems like he's sort of half-retired but I wonder if he starts playing a full schedule, what his results could be.

Hernych was very passive and let Mertl dictate the points and the younger Czech used it hitting a few good winners. He wasn't afraid of taking risk in big points. However he was losing for the whole tie break and was very upset with his crucial mistakes. Hernych just used his experience to take his 7th challenger title.

Filo V.
03-18-2012, 03:25 PM
I didn't think Jan was passive. I think he counter-punched. He let Mertl make mistakes and make the first move in rallies but Jan took advantage of that often by hitting behind Mertl often or taking advantage of openings in the court Mertl would expose. Jan's not an aggressive player. He's a counter-puncher and he executed that gameplan. I do agree that experience played a major factor here, however.

It's his 8th challenger title, not his 7th ;)

In my opinion he should have been more agressive taking into accont Mertl's poor movement, while it turned against him as Mertl was often in good positions to be agressive on his forehand.
Hernych could kick himself if he hadn't managed to win this because Mertl is not the kind of opponent you play against in a challenger final.

I think he was nervous and tight and went in with the gameplan of letting Mertl beat himself, which he did. Jan's not really comfortable taking the offense, though, so I'm not surprised he played a more conservative match, especially given it was a final. I'm glad it didn't backfire on him.

He's another one of those classic too good for challengers, not good enough for ATP players. He's not a physical player so it's not as surprising he's been able to keep up the level to win challengers for over 10 years than it would be with other players. He's also an intelligent player. It's definitely impressive for a guy who lacks a big weapon.
