Solid performance from Roger, some nice shots along the way.

Mahut played a pretty good second set but the result was never in doubt.

Through to the QF now.

Clinical from Roger, he will get better with the matches I guess. The surface plays nice and fast, great to see some entertaining points than endless baseline grinding...
Onto QFs :yeah:

That was pretty dead.

Federer was average and when he stepped it up Mahut didn't really have the answers, that's about it.

Fun match, the service game Nico played to gave the break at 4-4 second set was beyond abysmal.
Nice one for Fed! Now go win the whole thing, Roger ! :)

Good. Nothing special really. Shame he didn't manage to break at 4-3* but that's Federer for you...

He just wanted a clear scoreline and a double 6-4 was fine for him. Too good this Fed.

I hope Berdych will show him how average he is.

Niemo should beat him.

Half of pro players should beat Nadal yet they aren't doing this.

It's funny/sad that most times these days when a non S&V diehard goes for the S&V, they miss the serve 80% of the time.
Roger was doing that tonight, which sucked, as I love seeing him S&V.

It seemed that Mahut had a problem with his knee in the end of the match.

Anyway, for most of the match, he served very well and was holding his serve easily.

It must be strange for Federer, because the surface is much slower than where he used to play here.

Is it even slower than last year ? not sure exactly.

Not sure if you're hoping or stating here but there's no bye in Rotterdam so he's only through to round 2. Plays Youzhny.

Great atmosphere in Ahoy, it was sold out, but there were still seats empty, that always intrigues me, it happened with Nadal too in 2009.

Yes, Federer has so many fans, he just brings the entire stadium in ecstacy merely with his presence. Legend.

It doesn't seem really slow, though, just slower than last year.

Fed's memory is good but I doubt he's thinking about a match from 7 years ago. Likely going into it as if it were a new place altogether.

For those who don't know, Fed will play a short exo with Sijsling tomorrow around 7 pm local time before Del Po's match.

lol why fed is playing such tourneys? What he want to achieve? Fitness and free points probably, maybe its his last year in tennis.

You know, I've noticed the grunt on the serve in DC, odd. Not on every serve, but not always on the same serve. I thought he was only doing it on the one down the T, but he did it on the one out wide, as well. I wonder whether he's trying to put more on it, either pace or spin, causing him to exert more.

Fulfills that 500-level requirement so between now and Basel, he doesn't have to worry about it and can skip the entire Asian swing if he wants.

Highlights look good. Which they would, of course, but 8 minutes of highlights for a 6-4,6-4 is pretty decent. Court looks reasonably fast too.

nothing to write home about, below-average match. there's a sort of "this may be the last time i get to see him play live" feeling to all his tournaments these days so here's hoping he shows the dutch something to remember him by in the later rounds. fed / delpo final wouldn't be so terrible afterall.

Exactly this^, and,
2. It's another indoor tournament on a surface that suits him and,
3. He avoids playing the top players.

Obviously he should only be challenged by Berdych here.
His QF match is against another 30 yr old Jarkko Nieminen [46] (FIN) - Federer has a 12-0 HTH.
Semis would be against either 30 yr old Nikolay Davydenko or the mercurial Richard Gasquet, both of whom he pretty much owns on hard surfaces.

i wonder if he gets an appearance fee. i mean doing this super tiebreak today for the fans for instance. he's either being way too nice or he has to.

IMO he's just trying to get used to the indoor rhythm. In the interview he said he felt lacking rhythm the whole match. It's quite reasonable right after 3 matches on clay.

He's obviously wants to work on improving his recent tie breaker performance. :)
At the Davis Cup in Forum Fribourg, he served poorly (40% first serves) in the critical 3rd set tie break and the high bouncing irregular court conditions and the excellent play of John Isner had nothing to do with that. It was one of the few things in his control and he muffed it.

At the Australian Open, he lost the critical 3rd set tie break against Rafael Nadal.
True, the evening's cool conditions slowed play.
But with his service, he should rarely lose a tie break to Mr. Nadal.
He has aced him 4 times consecutively, and can place the ball where he wants.

The tie break is all about execution and mental toughness.
Granted Igor Sijsling is no Isner or Nadal, but it's still an opportunity to improve, no?

Respectfully,
masterclass
