Oh well, he got through

Backhand was at least looking good, forehand needs finetuning. Serve, especially 2nd serve, needs to improve massively.

Who's next?

Kohli played good after a bad start, but that gives me hope. Auckland will tell a little bit more, where his way is going this year!

Kohli fought well. I thought he was done in the second after losing the break advantage.

Gremelmayr next for Nadal.

Good stuff from both guys, some entertaining and aggressive points. Havent seen that from Nadal in some time

Pity PK couldnt get that deserved one win over Nadal, but he looked pretty good, hopefully he will do well this year. He doesnt belong at no. 43.

Nadal in best of two hard court match after service winner taking 30 seconds between the points . When it will be enough of cheating ?

I only saw the third set, but Rafa's serve looked average, forehand as well, but surprisingly the backhand was cracking :yeah:

Btw, Nadal's matches should be scheduled last on court. He takes so darn long to finish his matches anyway :o

in the second set, esspecially towards the end of it and the tiebreak, Philip was hitting some insane shots, he was playing fantastically.

at moments Nadal was lackluster but he really picked it up and, as someone else mentioned already, he looked to be hitting a bit more agressively and appeared to be more involved in the points than seen in a while.

good first match of the year against a tricky opponent

Pirata.

Has Kohli won a set against Rafa in all their hard court matches?

Happy with the win. Sad for Phillip, but he should be proud of today's match. He done well, but to beat Nadal he got to be perfect.

yes, because all the rest like Tsonga, Karlovic, Misha they all finished their matches in less than an hour

Kohli would have needed Dodig to share some of his testicular prowess today. 1*-0 in the final set and then he loses 4 straight games.

Yes, indeed Rafa has improved his backhand. The forehand is not bad either. Serve was so so but I will take it. The return hasn't been improved since when - 2004?

How about you stop spanning every thread concerning Nadal (and many of those unrelated to him) with the same spam?

Perhaps the moderators might consider helping you out with another of your bans.

Nadal has not won a title off clay in ages and it certainly ain't happening in Doha.

Wasn't awake for this one unfortunately but have caught some highlights and Nadal did look very involved and spoke very positively and with purpose in his post match interview. Him and Fed look raring to go as always and hopefully they will meet in the final. I would love it if Tsonga won though.

Public secret . Federer's tariff isn't less than 1M US dollars , Nadal's is something like 300-500 thousands . But in Qatar and Dubai they are getting more . They were stories Fed got 1,5 M one year in Dubai

Every non GS and MS 1000 tournament paying appearance fees for seeded players

did you watch the match? besides his forehand being slightly off key and the serve not quite up to par, he was looking quite good. more focused and involved than in recent months, and his achilles heel, the backhand, was looking better than it has in a long time....

it looks pretty good considering this is the first match of the season and Philip at moments was hitting with some sublime form

He's usually struggled against Kohlschreiber, but I'll be surprised if Nadal ups his game before Indian Wells.

Topspindoctor

Expected result. Mugschreiber is a journeyman and can't trouble Nadal even when he's playing at 10%. Good practice match, Nadal is favorite for the title here easily.

Terrible from Rafa but he got through I suppose, and Kohli played surprisingly well at times.

I thought this to be a pretty decent performance by Rafa, even though he obviously needs more improvement to become a genuine contender for the AO title.
Backhand especially worked really fine.

Yes, he lost a set to Kohlschreiber (who was playing amazingly during that second set, especially in the TB :o), but such is nothing new. Even though Kohli is one of Rafa's pigeons (and near to becoming a turkey), I think he won a set in five of their eight matches, so surely not a walk-over opponent for Raf. Good practice for Rafa and perhaps just what he needed to start finding his rhythm.

What was the W/UE ratio of both?

I don't think these are actually recorded for ATP250 tournaments because I never seem to manage to find them. At least no official stats.
I'm not counting comments on fan blogs on this...

And that's not cheating.

He said before the match he was better and wasn't in pain anymore.

anyone knows if sheikhs pay players like Nadal or Federer some kind of appearance fees?

They do. Who knows how much... But if they get 1 million for an exo, I suspect it's more here.

thanks, I wondered why Nadal drags himself to tournaments like Doha, and money makes logical explanation. If I were playing like sh**, I wouldn´t take single step from Mallorca. It doesn´t look good for AO

There's a number of mandatory 250 and 500 tournaments... the organizers pay the top players so that they choose their tournaments.

What was the W/UE ratio of both?
....................Nadal......Kohlschreiber
Winners..............39............26
Unforced errors......33............34

Terrible?, I only saw the third set (from like 2-1) and he looked to be playing great.

topspinn saying that the german mug is better than davydenko jajajaja the nadull`s tards everyday more funny really!!!!

nadal changes his racket for win more power in his shots and serve , it`s a good signal but i don`t think that with only that he will defeat nole.

nadal is not an agressive player and the changes maybe fails too

Are you retarded? I said the German was a better player than Baldenko right now and I am certainly correct in that regard. Baldenko is finished and Olderer might have as well faced a random fixer from challenger circuit - the result still would've been the same.

Nadal after the match

"I'm very happy about my level," stated Nadal. "I think I played a very good first set. The only moment that I didn't play well was the beginning of the second and after the tie-break. For the rest [of the match], I think I played solid."

If that is the case, i dont understand why anybody doesnt complain to the Net Umpire. To me it looks as if some sort of camaraderie amongst the Top players which dominates the rest of the players.

Its a big part of Nadal's game. I call it latent gamesmanship. If the point gets speedened up Nadal will lose half of his game. i am sure about it

nadal still looks like he hasnt learned anything last year, hoping for djoker to have a bad day so he can snatch a slam is too risky im afraid, he needs to step it up, fast.
