Oooookay, great match.
First set was a monologue, 5-0 Tomic up, and when serving 5-1 he got broken.
He easily broke and won the 1st set. At that moment the match was in Tomic hands.
But Julien reacted so well... And won the 2nd set deserving it.
He was break up in the 3rd set but Bernard recovered it fast, and then... You know the end of the story. Julien saved 3 MPs, but it wasn't enough. Tomic won a very, very important match.

Congratulations Bernard, keep on the good work.

Julien saved 5 MPs only to miss an overhead and double fault at deuce in the last game

Awful loss for Benneteau in the end. Did so much work to get in a winning position then mugged it up.

Tough way to end it for Benneteau. He received medical treatment and had a good deal of DF's in the end of that 3rd set.

3rd set of this one was the first set of tennis I've watched this year and it was pretty entertaining. Tomic has good potential.

I thought Tomic was absolute garbage for most of it, apart from the first set. Too many unforced errors on big points not to mention blew 5 match points before he actually got one by default. Benneteau was alright in patches but overall it wasn't pretty by both players.

Not a great match from Tomic, too many wasted opportunities. At least he seemed happy with the way he played.

Good revenge win for Tomic.

Didn't think it was that bad a match, especially for the opening hit out of the season for both. Some sexy tennis from B-Nard in the opener then the trademark lack of concentration kicked in during the second set, combined with Benneteau lifting his level. Benne then dominated from the middle of the second to the middle of the third then started cramping up. Tomic took advantage, regained his focus and won it on his sixth match point.

This is a good victory for Tomic considering that Benneteau is one of those dangerous floating players that can give a hard day to anyone if he is a good one.

Bernard improves to 1-3 in Brisbane and 1-2 versus Benneteau.

I didn't see it, but apparently Tomic said on court after the match, that if he continues to play like this he has a good chance to win the Australian Open this year. :o

It was allegedly in the on-court post match interview. I didn't hear it, but two people at social tennis said they heard him say it. I can't find it in an article anywhere so maybe they were pulling my leg.

Yeah, he shouldn't have let Benneteau into the match after controlling the first set so thoroughly.

Still, he and Dimitrov seem on the ascent overall, while Harrison and Berankis don't seem to have improved during offseason.

You know when you're having tough matches against Benneteau and coming through them, you're champ material. Keep it up, lad.

i'm not sure why but i like tomic, maybe because he doesn't play so all out on every shot.

the ending was comical though, felt like a wta last game sob

You're right, he mixed it up much more than his French opponent. His slice backhand has the potential to develop into something wicked.

i love his slice backhand so clean, not like a nadal's ect where it looks force or learnt rather than natural

I feel the same way about Tomic. Watching the match last night I was thinking "I have no idea why, but the way he plays is nice to watch".

Benneteau is a huge mug for DFing like a WTA player 2-3 times per service game in the third set. And it still took Tomic 2 and a half hours to win.

Can't keep your eyes off his unique style of play. He hypnotizes you into thinking he doesn't give a shit. Though sometimes that isn't just hypnotics.

tomic reminds me of miroslav mecir, the way he moves, the way he lulls his opponent and then strikes ...

Don't offend Tomic by puting him in the same level as Grishit DiMugtrov. Tomic was a QF wimbledon finalist at the age of 18. The bulgarian was playing juniors with his age...

i find his tennis smooth and the timing gives him power rather than muscling shots. he hits flatter than a lot of atp players too. he just seems to have all round feel.

How anyone can find Tomic's game nice to watch is beyond me. Aesthetically speaking his game is horrific and his forehand technique is just plain bad. It doesn't help that his on-court demeanor exudes alarming levels of douche-baggery

Yes, and also he won a set to Nole. A fit perfect Nole at the top of his game.

Technique is only bad if it doesn't produce a desired result consistently. His forehand does.

I take it you don't like Dimitrov lol. To be honest I'm lukewarm about all the young hopes, they alternately have potential and are irritating (rude stupid etc -- immature so maybe they'll grow up). But I'm hoping they all improve. Tennis needs it. Berankis, also in your sig, is actually my fave of the 4 and the most grounded-seeming but I worry he's trying to play bigger tennis than he can muster.
