Lendl coming on board as Andy's coach after all? Waiting for some official confirmation but it's been on twitter (which has now helpfully crashed)

Murray's got this. With or without Lendl on board. Actually more likely with.

Looking forward to his match against Kei.

Have a good feeling about this year.. as usual.

Andy's Facebook

Very happy to announce that Ivan Lendl is my new full time coach. His impact on the game is unquestionable and he brings experience and knowledge that few others have, particularly in major tournaments. Happy New Year :)

An intriguing move - I thought it was very interesting when it was first posited back in March 2011 even though nothing came of it then.

I will be fascinated to see how that chemistry works out and what, if anything, Lendl is able to bring to the table in terms of honing Andy's unquestionable talent and turning him into a winner at the majors. Lendl has been exactly where Andy was, losing his first three major finals, so if anyone can help Andy make that final step, Lendl is better placed than most.

Great, things are sorted on the coach side of things. It's all coming together for 2012 then. Lendl has unproven coaching credentials but his experience and similarities to Andy can only help. Hopefully their ego's don't clash and they gel quickly.

Just repeating what I said in another thread: When there were rumours about this earlier in the year I thought it sounded like a good idea so hopefully this works out.

Andy lost the 1st set 7-5 and I think he's called for the trainer?

:rolls: 'carnival of hell' is just my favourite description ever for certain Murray matches, I still remember you saying this during the AO last year and I found it hilarious for some reason

I'm glad I didn't follow his past few matches on livescore...

Don't relax yet scoobs. The commentators are putting a jinx on him saying he will win two GSs this year--one of them being Wimbledon and that he will finish the year ranked #1!!!!!! I would love, love, love, to see it happen, but somehow with Andy I don't know if it will or not

Fairly routine win. I'm not bothered, Lendl didn't look bothered, Kim's hair didn't look bothered, everyone's unbothered! And given how cute Vasselin is, there was some double eye candy to boot.

Sorry I had to leave all of you, but I guess Andy's work on a bagel and me being upset I couldn't see it worked up the perfect storm. I lost my power here so that is why I suddenly quit posting! Oh thank you so very much for posting that :D I know Andy isn't the hottest looking guy in the world, but he obviously has great charm and a wonderful personality. I wish more people knew that side of Andy. And I must say the guys doing the after Match interviews are really letting the players' personalities come out by asking some really interesting off the wall (as we say in the U.S.) questions instead of asking the same dull questions that are usually asked after a Match!

Easy time for Andy. They had only played about 2 or 3 games and the other player asked for the trainer. He took a couple of pills. Andy won the 1st Set 6-1, and won the 2nd Set also 6-1, and had a 1-0 lead in the 3rd Set and the other player pulled out of the Match. Each of the 1st two Sets took only 22 minutes each so Andy had a very easy time of it :)

It was such a nothing match, Kuku wasn't a factor at all, felt like a sleepy R1 somewhere against a guy who had no chance and knew it, not a slam 4th round. Shame Kuku was injured but for Andy, perfect to conserve the energy.

Kei is the easier of the two options, not necessarily easy, but Kei's gotta be feeling tired now - he's had 4 very tough matches to make it this far. Andy should be okay for this if he maintains his recent form.

He needs to get that first serve % up - when that's low it drags his game down, it becomes more ragged

I'm not shocked that Kei put up such a test. He's a dangerous player who I think will be top ten at the end of the year barring any injury.

And that first serve does need to go up. Novak and David will not let him get away with such a low percentage.

And really, I'm not shocked people are still talking Roger as if he's the number one player. He's always been the media darling out of The Big Four.

This is what concerns me now about Andy. He needs to look at the positives not the negatives like you are. To even have any chance of winning a Match the 1st thing you have to do is be in the Match. And Andy was really into this Match with the exception of the 4th Set I don't know what happened there? And then his nerves got him in the end. But I think with more time with his Coach he is actually going to finally win a Slam :)

Hi guys, not checked in in ages...life has been getting in the way of tennis recently :(

My heart did break again after that match - every Aus Open seems to end this way!, but after watching the final today, I'd stilll say he is mentally and even physically quite a bit short of winning a slam, in this era w/ Nole,Rafa and Fed around.

Andy is a phenomenal player - far better than many past grandslam winners, and even if he never wins a slam, that will not change.

But I do have hope.....I have faith in Andy and in Lendl to get the best out of Andy to really make this dream come true.

cmon Andy!!!!!

Guest12315544

I'm beginning to think it is coming down to just being Nole. Roger is older, Rafa can't keep his shots in play anymore, so with more work from Andy and help from Lendl I think Andy has the room and the time to move up in the rankings and hopefully stay there for a while

MuzzahLovah

I'm definitely feeling better about this result after hearing from Lendl and Murray but I hope he backs up with a good win in the next hard coming tourneys- he always has less pressure outside of slams and building confidence in these smaller tournaments can't hurt.

It means that Andy tends to have injuries at some of the worse times. Not that it is ever a good time to have injuries come a player's way, but like at the end of last year Andy had to withdraw from the WTF due to an injury. Has he been able to have played the Fed might not have gotten that number 3 ranking back from Andy at the end of the year. Maybe you don't understand about the term "snake bit" it doesn't mean that a snake actually bit him the term "snake bit" is used where I live to just mean that a person can be unlucky about things. And Andy has had some bad luck with injuries so I referred to him as being "snake bit".

Murray set to swerve Davis Cup tie
ESPN staff

A "stiff and sore" Andy Murray seems set to miss Great Britain's Davis Cup clash with Slovakia on the weekend of February 10.

GB face the Slovaks in Glasgow and it was hoped that Murray would take in the clash, having led the team to promotion with victory over Hungary last November.

However, the British No. 1 picked up a few niggles during his run to the semi-finals of the Australian Open and he is poised to take a break before heading to Florida to train with his new coach Ivan Lendl.

"My body's sore," Murray said after his defeat to eventual winner Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals of the Australian Open. "I had a few problems during the tournament, niggles and things. I had a problem with my back so we need to fix it.

"It will be good to take a break given the long year ahead with the other grand slams and the Olympics."

See now what I mean by being "snake bit" with injuries?

EddceLLent
01-31-2012, 01:31 PM
Have to admit that i'm really disappointed with his decision to not play Davis Cup. I think with him in the team, even he has "a few niggles", we'd be much likelier to win the tie.

If it was in the run up to something really important then i'd understand, but the next slam isn't until May. There isn't even a Masters tournament until March.

Very disappointed... It could even have been organised so that he'd maybe only even have to play one match if we'd won it before the fifth rubber (and with him winning his first, and you have to think Fleming & Hutchins would win the doubles, it'd only take one win from Ward to get to that point).

scoobs
01-31-2012, 03:03 PM
I can see the point but even with one match it's an entire week of rest and training he has to give up to be with the team.

Hmmm, doubtful it would have been one match tbh. Muzza would have been playing Klizan on Friday, with Ward against Lacko. Considering that Lacko is going to be our 'problem player' for the weekend, we'd have probably needed Muzza to beat him on Sunday as well.

Obviously this makes the Slovaks comfortable favourites now, but the tie isn't lost. We have to target Klizan anyway, and I'd hope that Ward could beat him regardless (despite being lower-ranked).

Doubles is very difficult, but we should be marginal favourites for that.

That would leave one more rubber...

My problem is with Evans really. Despite his new attitude to the game, it is impossible to forget his two previous Davis Cup ties (we lost both, nearly suffering double relegation), and the fact that he'll probably be too weak to beat either Slovak player. That just leaves Ward to beat Lacko. Possible, but not particularly optimistic.

Relegation tie away against either Israel or Portugal in prospect, and neither are pleasant. Doubt Muzza would be overjoyed either, especially as Portugal would be on clay shortly after the US Open.

A side note - does anyone know why Slovakia haven't used Karol Beck since 2005? Is it because he got a drugs ban?

I see back in 2002 he took a set off Pete Sampras, and in DC he's also had victories vs Guillermo Coria, Gilles Muller and Feliciano Lopez. Not a bad record... he's 5-6 in singles overall between 02 and 05 (and in all of those years Slovakia was in group 1 or world group).

There is a Beck Forum, but I don't know how active it is now. When he was banned posters used it as more of a "chat forum" while waiting for him to comeback. But I haven't been around that area since he did come back. Yes I think Andy is pretty much the face of British tennis right now so I'm sure they want him for the Davis Cup, but he has to be careful and not over due his scheduling! Tough draw, but that's okay. The harder the better I say.

Berrer should be fairly easy. That's a nice comeback match. Davydenko could be tricky, but I don't see any problems there. Berdych? That could be tough, but I see him winning. He is the better hardcourt player. Then Djokovic. He has what it takes to win easily. Can he win the title? I can see him winning this. He's won a lot of masters titles and this draw isn't any different than any of them.

Andy was such a drama queen during this match.

But at least he got through.

Apparently he had some tummy trouble hench the up and down play he showed.

So I feel bad for calling him a drama queen. :awww:

Compared to past years, this first match post AO has been a pretty easy uneventful ride for Andy

Hopefully it passes - I'd like a drama-free Dubai where he lives up to his billing - he's never really done very well here and it's odd to me considering how good he was in Doha.

It was less drama filled today. Straight sets though he could've won it easier.

Pretty good from Andy without needing to really hit the heights.

Good time zone for Aussies. Only 9:30PM here! Good start from Andy. Looks to be picking up from where he left off from his last match.

Very good for 1 1/2 sets and then it all went to hell and he was lucky to escape. 63 75

My stream was pretty dodgy as well...and I missed half the second set including where he got broken serving for it, so dunno what happened there.

it's 3:37am here now :o:D

So I'm not alone in this. And you should get some slepp. :)

So...Andy beat Novak. I need to actually see the match before I can evaluate his play but he better win that final tomorrow.

He played fantastic, and Nole was pretty poor, until 62 52 and then he thought about and lost the next three games. Then he battened down the hatches, held, and put the pressure on again to break and finish the match.

So overall it was a great performance, but the wobble near the end stains it slightly - would have been better with a clean kill - but a win's a win.

Oh don't blame her Chris. As I said in Novak's forum, the real culprit is Novak and his slutty, slutty ways. :o

It's the sort of Murray performance that really pisses me off. When you need him to really stand tall, stick his chest out and say "come and have a go" - he sorta shrinks and gets pathetic and misses a lot and hands it over like he's seen the alpha-dog show up.

GAH.

Fair assessment really. It was a close match but he couldn't step up when it really mattered. Still needs to work on that. And I'm still partially blaming the Slutty Serb.

I think he really needs practice at beating two of the top 3 guys back to back away from slams so it doesn't feel so daunting when he needs to do it in slams. This was an opportunity and he didn't step up today. A shame.

Jade Fox

Even though it sucks that he didn't win, there are still some positives. For starters he isn't having the post AO slump of the last two years. So there's that. And he seemed positive in a post match article on the Telegraph and was already heading to IW. So I have a feeling this year that he won't be losing to some Alex Bogolomov/Donald Young type.

scoobs
03-04-2012, 05:44 PM
True. And with perspective, it doesn't feel like a terrible loss. It just sucked to watch it because I really REALLY wanted him to beat Roger and he played too flat and meh when he really needed to step up.

I couldn't watch it- Andy didn't break when he had those two break points, and I was worried, but I thought he'd have more chances, and then he just collapses in the last game of the first set. I really wanted him to back up his good, touch wins against Berdy and Nole. In the broader context, it's deffo and improvement from last year, but it's still leaves a bitter taste.

But I like him playing at Dubai instead of Rotterdam or Memphis- he needs more experience beating the top players back to back than he needs easy tourneys.

Okay fine, Lopez did play well, but Andy played like shit. Serve's shit, forehand's shit, backhand's shit everything was shit in this match.

And now watch Lopez lose to Ryan. Which would be great for me.
