I am still freaking out, I am so utterly thrilled about this. Absolutely fantastic job :worship:

Also I was watching a stream of the BBC and it was kind of hilarious how blatantly they were rooting for Murray. But the best thing was a few points from the end he hit a good serve and the commentator said something like "maybe he just won't have to hit another groundstroke." And...he didn't.

Yes believe me I'm happy for Andy and Laura, but if the medals had to be of different colors I'm glad the gold came in Singles :yeah: And the fact that he defeated Roger made it just all that much sweeter :) People had already awarded Roger the Gold before the Olympics had ever started and I'm just so glad Andy won that I don't know what to do! I wish we had a cartwheel turning Similie

P.S. to scoobs who I know either still plays or at least used to play TT. I started playing TT at the very last of June and today I won my first TT Singles Final :) This has been a great day all around for me--just picture perfect ;)

Congratulations Andy Murray, Olympic Champion! Fantastic effort to achieve silver in mixed doubles too. :worship:

What a comprehensive victory, in straight sets in best of 5-set format. Played like I always knew he could, but ultimately, he had to find his own way in his own time.

I'm so thrilled for him, his family, his team. I'm beyond myself with joy as a fan.

Interesting draw for Andy

R1 Bogomolov Jr
R2 Dofig
R3 Lopez
R4 Raonic
QF Tsonga
SF Federer
F Djokovic

is the potential route.

In spite of the horrible loss last year, not really worried about Bogo. R4 vs Raonic could be interesting, then the back end is intriguing.

A great 1st week draw on PAPER! 2nd week draw is tough as expected in a GS---we'll have to wait and see....I think theres a reasonable chance Raonic fails to make 4R anyway, tbh --even if he does THIS Murray has enough in the tank to beat him.

Cereal Killer
08-24-2012, 02:34 AM
If you wanna be the best you have to be able to beat anyone, otherwise you don't deserve to win. Anyone could catch fire and beat him. He has an excellent record against the players in his quarter, except Raonic, who he lost one clay match to. At this point it's not even certain Raonic will reach R4. I really don't get all this worrying. You either believe in him or you don't. If he's not in form he doesn't stand a chance anyway. We should be happy that he didn't draw Berdych or del Potro in the QFs. I prefer Tsonga by a mile.

True but he's now had 3 weeks hitting on it, even if his matches haven't gone well. And you know that a slam is what he's focusing on. I think he'll play himself into the tournament, though I still expect an ugly match somewhere. Possibly Lopez or Haase (again!) in R3.

He's shown that on his game, he can handle and frustrate Tsonga. He can do this to Berdych and Delpo too but I think they have more potential just to hit him off court than Tsonga, who is a bit more creative on court.

Cereal Killer
08-24-2012, 10:58 AM
He's 6-1 against Tsonga. He's definitely a better match-up for Andy than Berdych. Although I'm not sure if Berdych will make it to the QFs, he seems to be off his game lately. Andy hasn't played against del Potro since 2009, so that would be new territory in a way, even if he has a great record against him too. The best option would have been Tipsy, but you can't always get what you want.

Besides his Wimbledon draw was tougher than this one and he got through that as well. Let's wait and see what happens. The draw could still open up.

I like to see Andy look in form and focused. And the few chances I have had to see him on TV. He looks like the Andy before he won the Gold Medal  However that Gold Medal didn't come on a hard court, but actually since it was there in England it couldn't have been more perfect for Andy :) Still I have read about a lot of players that have a let down after the Olympics so I hope the Andy I have seen on hard courts was having a let down from the Olympics. But now with a Slam coming up I hope he can focus on the Slam like he did the Olympics. I have just wanted Andy to win the USO for so many years now perhaps that is wearing on me!

He has said that because of the Olympics he didn't get to do his usual heat training in Miami post-Wimbledon.

So he's not as physically strong as he normally would be coming into this event and he's not conditioned for the hot humid conditions like he normally would be. This showed in R1 and it showed bigtime today when he got drained pretty quickly.

He broke 4 times. He offered up 0 breaks, 0 break points.

64% first serves. He won 39% of the points on Milos's serve, and Milos served 70% first serve.

Oh no not a day session :scared:

To be fair he did seem a little more humble after the match. Apparently Andy said sorry to him at the net and that he (Andy) got lucky a few times. But Milos thought that he played well and that Andy was simply too good for him that day. I like it when players don't try to find excuses and just admit they were beaten by a superior player. And I agree, Andy has always been respectful towards his opponents. One of the many reasons why I like him so much.

I hate it when players not only have to battle their opponents, but also battle the elements! And N.Y. has had enough rain. The U.S. needs its rain in the Midwest right now! The only good thing is sometimes rain will come and knock the temperature down. But then other times it just temporarily knocks the temperature down and then the heat comes back worse than ever! And the starting and stopping of play is awful when the rain comes and goes. I had wanted a cloudy day with the temperature down, but no rain. Actually what I really wanted was a night session!

Thanks, Andi-M. Unfortunately, I didn't see it in time, so I just had to listen to it on Radio 5 instead. Probably less harrowing. And kudos to the two ball-by-ball commentators - they did a great job just keeping up with the play.

I don't know why we have so many haters here at MTF? I don't hate any tennis player. There are some I like more than others, but how can you honest hate someone you don't really even know? The furthest I will go with that is there are a couple of players I don't like all that much!

Beats me, too - and it's the thing I find most off-putting about these boards. I mean, in my life there's only been one person I could ever claim to have hated, and he was a dictator and had a family friend assassinated. Compared with that, I'm afraid tennis players just don't cut it: I have a list of ones who I don't respect because I find them unsporting, and others whose style of play I don't particularly like, but that's about it.

alypen

I watched the BBC News Channel this evening in an attempt to catch up with the story, and was very disappointed by the level of reporting (perhaps it's usually like this - I don't usually watch it). Maybe they were trying to flog a rather worn-out horse by this time, but the implication that pretty much the whole of Scotland (and apparently nobody in England, Northern Ireland or Wales) stayed up to watch the match was pretty hard to take (and no thanks to BBC TV there, of course - I'm assuming they didn't buy the rights to broadcast it specifically to Scotland and leave the rest of us out, although I noticed that they duplicated the coverage on BBC Radio Scotland - don't they get Radio 5 Live up there?). Really a missed opportunity, I thought.

MsTree
09-12-2012, 06:53 PM
Radio Scotland had it's own show based on the 5 live commentary but with our usual sports presenters - and quite right too - no need to send 2 radio commentary teams. Reporting Scotland on TV dedicated 9 mins out of a 30 min programme to Andy and the celebrations in Dunblane plus he got another couple of mentions later on and the Scotland footie fans sang "One Andy Murray - there's only one Andy Murray" drowning out the football piece
"Breakfast" on national tv in the morning ran with Andy as the main story - don't think there was any lack of coverage there (in the morning anyway)
Not sure the beeb have ever had the rights to air the USO?

scoobs
09-12-2012, 07:51 PM
BBC has no rights whatsoever on the US Open beyong Radio 5 live I think - so they relied on limited footage available that Sky let them use. They were spending quite a lot of time on it on BBC News 24 and the main bulletins - it was leading the headlines in the morning and early afternoon before being moved down to second behind the school testing story. They interviewed Miles McClagan, Andrew Castle and Tim Henman at various points, showed a statement from the PM about it and had a piece from Dunblane too. I think their coverage was okay but fairly superficial - but I find that true of BBC News in general.

I just hope Andy can keep control on things and that his life doesn't change too much - he would hate that. When you win your first slam for a hungry nation it can get overwhelming with the demands on you and your time as everyone wants a piece of you.

Ask Li Na - when she won the French last year what followed became so crazy that she lost her focus on tennis. Hopefully Andy doesn't get himself into the same situation.

Just like the bad old days, following on livescore. Anyway well done Andy, Ivo is a challenge nobody wants to meet in early rounds. He doesn't make too many later rounds because his all-round game isn't good enough, but give him a good serving day and he can beat most players over 3 sets. Normally he wins in a lot of tiebreaks, but came up against the new Tiebreak King today.

Dammit even Challengers can manage at least a static camera at one end - and an ATP 500 can't?

No way I can get up at that ungodly hour. However, it's on tennistv now, so I should be able to rewind the stream and watch it later. I'll try not to look at the score beforehand, but I'm not very strong-minded that way.

^ It's hard.

I'll get up, I think... Maybe we will get lucky and Tipsy/Raonic takes 3h+.

Sorry guys, I'm hoping for quick Match for Rao/Tipsy so I don't have to stay up too late to watch Muzzah and Stan.

Cereal Killer
10-05-2012, 02:19 AM
But a tired Tipsy or Raonic would also be helpful for a potential semi-final. ;)

We need to save energy.

GSM Andy :D 6-2, 3-6, and 6-2 so it wasn't a thing of beauty, but Andy got the job done when he had to :yeah:

Not too shabby from Andy in the end but that second set sleepwalk was a bit frustrating.

Cereal Killer
10-05-2012, 09:51 AM
Yup, I agree. He shouldn't have lost his serve like that. I guess he's still Andy Murray after all.

Do you guys favour his chances for tomorrow? He certainly can't afford to go AWOL for awhile during that match.

Want to watch this match but that time is too ridiculous.

Milos is becoming a nuisance.

Cereal Killer

You win some, you lose some... I'm a bit upset, but at the end of the day this was just a 500 event. I can't say I'm surprised either, because I didn't think Andy looked particularly great yesterday. He also lost that doubles match with his brother which was probably a bit disappointing. Hopefully, he'll do better in Shanghai. At least Raonic is not in his half of the draw there. ;)

I think after the year he had, everything he does from this point on is a bonus.

Mae
10-06-2012, 09:09 AM
He looked like the "old" Andy having temper fits  I hate to see that and being upset doesn't help his playing any at all!

Moozza
10-06-2012, 11:32 AM
Not bothered about this result. Andy has had an amazing but also tough year. Any physical or mental tiredness is acceptable and atleast he chose the right match to beat Raonic.

The haters on GM are pretty funny though. They are trying to convince themselves that this loss devalues Andy's slam or something.
