Federer 2008 or Nadal 2011?

Which season do you consider better?

In 2008, Federer passed the 600 matches mark and it was when his decline began.

In 2011, Nadal passed the 600 matches mark and it was when his decline began.

Both players defended only one of the 3 slams they had won on the previous year.

Both players lost 2 slam finals back to back to their nemesis.

Federer lost in the SF of the AO to the eventual champ.

Nadal lost in the QF of the AO to Ferrer.

Federer won 4 titles.

Nadal won 3 titles.

Both players were rumored to have contracted mono.

Federer won the Gold medal in doubles at the Olympics.

Nadal won the Davis cup.

Both players lost in RR at the YEC.

Federer lost 4 finals.

Nadal lost 7 finals.

________________________

I voted Fed's 2008 because of the better result at the AO. SF > QF.

Well, lets take a look at their W-L record.

Fed 08- 68-16 (80.95%)
Nadal 11- 70-15 (82.35%)

Close, Nadal takes it by a hair.

How about ranking points?

Fed 08- 8,805 ranking points
Nadal 11- 9,755 ranking points

Clearly, Nadal 11.

Similarly, if Nadal 12 should equal Fed 09, I'd take that. 2 slams to get up to 12, passing Lendl and Borg, up to #3 in the Open Era, #7 all time, just behind Sampras.

Nadal did better at the Masters, so I'd take him. After all, he was stopped the majority of the time by one guy, while Federer lost to a variety of players.

the seasons are somewhat similar as far as success is concerned but it is strange for you to assume it is the begin of Nadal's 'decline' when you haven't even witnessed one season following it. if Nadal also has a bad 2012 season then it will be safe to say he started to decline in 2011, but as far as now it is just guesswork.

I would say Nadal was better in 2011 than Federer in his perspective year. this is just because Nadal actually played at a fairly high level for most of the season (besides Australia and the Asian swing) but just faced the hot guy of the season, Djokovic. it is not as though anyone else could beat the guy Nadal kept losing to in 2011... Rafael's form has been blown out of proportion as far as the fans on this site being far too critical

Sri

I'd say Federer '08. Outside of clay, it always went 5 sets with his main rival (Rafa) even though the conditions were against him. He also finished the season on high.

Nadal has been beaten more easily by his 2011 rival (Nole). And really faded away by the end of the season. Gotten beaten by unknowns.

One would have to say Federer as he won more titles, reached the semi rather than quarters at the AO and actually had a chance in one of the slam finals he lost. And given that he was battling mono and back problems, that makes his already superior achievements even more impressive.

I do. When I get old and dumb, I will forget everything Nadal did in 2011. Pretty much already have, and most of the rest of his career as well. But I won't forget the first set of Fed-Djokovic in SF or first and third set against Murray in F, or that first break (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7cy4f80SZo) in the 5th set against Andreev when the USO '08 crowd went ballistic for Fed.

Says something when you remember master 1000 finals over slam wins.

I had mono and strep at the same time and I still played throughout my senior year of varsity tennis fine for the most part.

It all depends on how severe the case is.

By the way, did you just start watching tennis in 2011 or what? Clearly you are not even a true tennis fan if you don't remember the SARS incident.

Federer was able to win 3 slams after 2008. He still had game and motivation despite Nadal owning him in 2008. Not so sure about Nadal after this year. Which could prove Federer was better in 2008 than Nadal this year.

good thread.

both years are marked as ones when a top player got derailed. slight difference, in favor of nadal, is that in 08 it was top players top tournament that he was dumped out of (wimbledon). in my mind, because nadal kept the french open title, this season isnt as bad as 08 was for fed.

Federer defended his USO title by avoiding Nadal just like Nadal defended his FO title by avoiding Djokovic.

The fact that Federer was very close to defending Wimbledon in 2008 makes his year better. He almost won a second slam in 2008. Darkness was not his best friend....

Nadal was not close to winning a second slam this year, he only won a set in the Wimbledon and USO finals.

fed lost wimbledon in epic fashion. his main rival took it away from him.

this year, nadal kept what he always had as his own turf.

And is it Federer's fault that he had two different "turfs" for himself at both Wimbledon and the USOpen as opposed to Nadal who has dominated the one in Paris?
I always believed and still believe that Federer is a better Hard court player than Grass courter. Federer defended his own turf in 2008, he won the USopen beating Djokovic and Murray and lost his "other" turf at Wimbledon 7-9 in the fifth. Nadal got his ass handed to him by Djokovic in a four setter in which not even one set went to even twelve games. Go figure.

I do think Nadal's 2011 will pip Federer 2008, though it doesnt matter much - neither player will really want to remember this year. But to say Nadal kept his turf is not the reason. Federer did too. But Nadal was more consistent throughout the year and didnt lose to many mugs before the USO like Federer did in 2008.

Nadal 2011 by a country mile. Federer had a terrible 2008 season, that was derailed by mono/lack of practise all the way into the early hardcourt season, and then he had a bad back that derailed the post USO romp. He did have 2 incredible throwback matches in the USO semis and finals that year (despite playing very mediocre tennis up till that point), but by and large he was very much a shell of himself. It wasn't until the claycourt season in 2009 that he started to play better again.

Rafa meanwhile has played under his level during 2011, but then its mostly about one player who has his number. Fed in 2008 was losing to people he routinely beat (Roddick, Blake, Karlo etc).

From a tennis standpoint, Rafa's overall level of tennis is superior in 2011.
