(The number after the entrants' names shows the penalty points for every deviation from the real rankings.)

The Challenge
Predict the Tennis players that will finish inside the Top 8 at the end of the 2012 season
(after the DavisCup finals) - and their rankings!

Basically the winner is who predicts most Top 8 players correctly (so as possible 8).
The predicted rankings will be used for tiebreaks. Then every single deviation from the real rankings
leads to one penalty point (for every player/pick simply accumulated).
For example, if I guess that Federer finishes 1st and Nadal 3rd, but in reality it turns out to be reversely,
then I receive 2 penalty points for each of them, so altogether 4.
Deadline for your picks is 29th December 2011, 11:00(AM) GMT (when the AbuDhabi tournament starts).
Before then you can also alter your picks / edit your posts if you like.

Stats
The Tennis players picked by the 47 entrants are sorted by their ATP rankings (year end 2011)
to better illustrate the expected changes.
The first number after the players' names shows how often they were picked.
The second number results from the predicted rankings, if 8 points for 1st ranks, ..., 1 for 8th.

1. Djokovic 46 338
2. Nadal 45 286!
3. Federer 47 286!

11. DelPotro 44 146

Del Potro (not convinced his game will ever get back to his best, but a distant 5th should be within reach)
Tsonga (not expecting any major breakthroughs)

Dolgopolov (he would probably have made it this season if he wasn't unwell all the way through Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Rome, Madrid, and the effects on match sharpness at RG/Wimb, yet still was within touching distance of top10).

Big 4 and Delpo, not in order (It's too difficult to put order, too many occasions)

Djokovic looked totally off balance at the World Tour Finals is why I predicted the way I did. Federer, Nadal, and Murray all have the game so that is not surprising? the only surprising one is that I put Del Potro at #4 because I am expecting a huge surge from him next year, especially after gaining confidence recently, beating Djokovic and pushing Nadal to the edge to clay.

but Saberq, it's just guesswork afterall, I have no idea, how could I? just feelings, vibes for the future

It is a prediction, they are all meant to be total failures anyways. People act like it is supposedly a gift for such a sport that can easily change in a week or two. Then when those that luckily get a prediction right, apparently they believe they have some kind of gift. These threads are just for fun.

I don't know what order I'd put them in, so I'm just going to list the players.

Djokovic, Nadal, Murray, Federer, Soderling, Tsonga, Del Potro, Ferrer, Fish and Tipsarevic. The top 4 is pretty much gauranteed, as is Ferrer. The others could slump, but I'm fairly certain most of the top 10 will consist of most, if not all, of these players.

Surprised to not see many shout-outs to Simon; and will Berdych really maintain Top 8? Idk. Overall the forum agrees that relatively little movement in the Top 8 from this year. I do think predicting the order of the "Big Four" is very tough - with perhaps Nadal and Federer being the biggest question marks this time.

Delpo really should get back to Top 8 considering he made Top 15 this year in his comeback year and didn't reach a single GS QF.

Monfils
12-26-2011, 01:57 AM
Only few people sees Monfils in 8 at the end of the year. When you know he is 16# without playing 4 M1000 and retiring in one ...

You are aware Djokovic's health and technique have gone up?

Don't think this year was mostly based on luck, and no skill.

Just because he won't win 3 slams next year, doesn't mean his level has dropped.

Once he recovers from the injuries and rustiness, he'll still be the man to beat. Nadal, Federer, etc. will come after. Djokovic is still the best player in the world by far.

A lot of people putting Murray in their top 3, but I have my doubts. The guy has held a spot in the top 3 for about 30 weeks in his career and never at the end of the season. I'm thinking the big 3 will stay dominant for another year, though I could be wrong.

of the year for fed...he doesnt have that many points to defend...he only has to do that at the later stages of the year.....

As far as nole, he has a hell of a lot of points to defend...at the beginning of year...he has a lot farther to fall, imho.

of course you are right it will be almost impossible ...but AO,IW or Miami,Madrid or Rome,US Open are very possible ;)

of course he will defend a few titles but that won't be enough in order to retain the Number 1 spot...

Although Nole just destroyed Roger in Abu Dhabi we will have a complete different match-up in Melbourne when they will most likely meet in the semis... Roger will take the chance and win the Australian Open - he hasn't won a GS in 2 years so he will be highly motivated in order to reclaim the AO crown...

If that comes true, Fed will win 1280 points while Novak would lose 1280 points... That means Roger would've already closed the gap by 2560 points... By the clay season, when Rafa possibly reclaims Madrid, ROme etc.(Fed and Ferrer are also strong competitors on clay) Nole will again lose a lot of points ;)

The same will go for the US Open - if Novak wanna become a true legend he needs to play on the 2011 level for 3-4 years such as Roger did between 2003 and 2007.. But I don't think he'll carry on that shape for so long.

The difference is that Roger's got huge talent, while Novak has less talent and equalizes that with hard work... I don't think he can be bothered to keep that up for a few years... Look how much non-discipline he showed in the past having affairs with girls from a tournament right before a final....

And I also don't believe he's gonna overcome the pressure and the huge expectations on him... Look what happened to DelPo after NY 2009....

Djokovic will probably finish #1. Wins 2 slams.

Federer and Nadal win 1 slam each.

Goat cheese hasn't won a GS for 2 years that's why he'll never win a GS again....he's no more able to win it, period and Nole has absolutely nothing to do with it. Old bodies are too slow to compete with young bodies, that's all. At the age of 30 with a chronic back problem and no more stamina, how could he win a GS ? He's no more able to win a 5 setters vs merry maker Kinder Bueno in Wimbly so if he"ll be lucky if he can reach a single GS's final in 2012. All goat cheese's fans are so unrealist that it's thrilling to read their expectations

Djokovic could end no.1 clearly but I'm hopeful about Nadal's chances between IW-Olympics - he needs to capitalise big time on clay & grass and then let Murray, Djokovic & Del Potro fight out the HC points. If the HC masters are more evenly divided & potentially Aus Open & US Open won by 2 different players then a dominant summer, which Nadal is clearly aiming for, could see him through to the year end ranking. Could see Del Potro doing better or worse than no.6 - consistency is the issue there.

He ran out of steam at the end of the year. Sure, he had a great year, 70-7, among the top 20 of all time.

But he's already 24. Most players peak at 23-24-25, around there. So you'd expect his absolute best season to have been last season.

Final Standings

Last year, with the Fish surprise, Roddick still in the mix, Tsonga not yet a lock at all and Soderling not yet injured things were much different,
however this year surprisingly NO surprises at all occured in the lineup of the Top 8 - as compared with the stats in post #1.
(In fact, if Almagro managed to win a single match in the DavisCup finals we would even get almost the same Top 10 as last year!)
Hence the "conservative" entrants performed best in this challenge.
11 entrants finished on 8/8:
