I wish Juan well in 2012. He so impressed me with his effort and emotion in the Davis Cup I added him to my signature. I just keep thinking all he needs is a little more conditioning to get clear back to where he was before the wrist injury and surgery. Because he played some beautiful looking tennis at the Davis Cup, but just seemed to run out of gas

I'm wishing Del Pony lots of good luck for the season 2012, no injuries, and hope he'll get back in the Top 10 soon where he belongs. :) :D

Vamos Delpo!! I hope by the end of 2012 he will be no.3 in the world!! I hope he wins a GS and a ATP 1000s tournament at least!! I'm fed up of people talking about the top 4 and then Delpo...it sud be the top 2 or top 3 plus Delpo...I hope he makes SF in AO...or F or W!!! :D

Either sleeping or working;) I rarely make time to watch tennis like I used to. Back to watching movies, hanging with the family ( they grow up too quickly and leave so I must get my time in) or playing piano. Considering taking another pottery class too:p

score was 6-4 6-2 btw. Next up is Marcos who has been playing extremely well since the latter part of last season so GL JM.

Same old bad luck. Against Juan everybody plays his best tennis. In Stockholm Blake, now Baghdatis is very good.

What an awful tired, lethargic and weak player he has become. Sydney was a good chance. Should skip AO to avoid a huge beating in the first round. Congrats Juan.

LawrenceOfTennis
01-12-2012, 09:46 AM
Of course he lost. Skip AO would be a smart move. It's terrible to be his fan. Shit, shit and more shit. That's what his fans get all the time.

Mae
01-12-2012, 09:49 AM
Juan  I like both players and when I first went to Baggy's Forum there was no one there at all! So I could feel more free to post without hurting anyone feelings. It's bad to like so many players because one of them always has to lose

Mae
01-12-2012, 09:53 AM
I can't figure out what has happening to Juan. He has to be recovered from the wrist surgery, but it is just like he has never gotten back his energy and fitness  I also noticed that fact at the David Cup. Juan just seems to run out of gas now

It's not only fittness. He has no big weapons anymore outside of his 1st serve. He hits the forehand with too much topspin, so it's similar to Nadal's shot. Bckhand has no variety and angles at all. And yes, he is slow. He is too old to improve, let's hope he can win a few matches this year. Not expecting anything from him anymore.

Mae
01-12-2012, 10:00 AM
But at times in the Davis Cup which I got to see on TV he was playing beautifully! And then it all just left. Leaving me to feel that he was just worn out.

cobalt60
01-12-2012, 12:26 PM
As I stated prior Baggy was playing extremely well at the end of last year and it has carried over into this year. Plus he is an excellent player whom everyone felt would be in the top 10 if not for injuries. It is what it is so onto the AO.
When he loses it is close and seems more about mental toughness and confidence not match play or fatigue. But of course my opinion.

Recovering in the 2nd Set big time! But what is wrong with Juan? He has never truly been the same since that wrist surgery. But that should be O.K. by now. shouldn't it? But he is just not the same player seems tired and out of conditioning, but I would have thought that would have come back by now also

cobalt60

Thankfully he won but I thought the 3rd and 4th sets could have gone either way. He appeared to be having issues with the sun on his toss so that would account for some of the serving issues. And he just does not like the heat- it always makes him lethargic And I don't think acclimatizing to the heat/humidity conditions can occur with everyone. Genetics have to play a role in that as well.

And is it me or does the AO seem even slower this year?
I was having the hardest time watching.

It's slower. Knowing the ATP it's not a surprise. They want Nadal and Djokovic to play final obviously.

LawrenceOfTennis

Watching his match last night, I think his forehand is terribly bad. It's moonballing, all his forehands are landing short, middle of the court. Too much topspin in it. His forehand from Davis Cup has disappeared. I'm stating to think clay will be his only good surface considering he hasn't done anything on hard courts in a year.

david_williams
01-17-2012, 03:00 PM
Well he obviously had issues with the sun and he got a time violation warning at the beginning of the 4th set for hiding in the shadow for too much time ╮(╯▽╰)╭. He was quite upset becuz of the sun. But well, he had issues with Mannarino too but he made it through. Coming up Karvic, better luck!

Maybe we can do a compromise. How about someone post the score after each set is done? Then the final result. That would keep the thread from getting too clogged up. Maybe whoever posts the set score can also post set highlights if they want to. Sound reasonable Ms. Mod?

Those fans who believe he will ever reach another slam final are living in a pink dream world. Juan's movement is out of the top 30 to say the least, his forehand sucks big time. Terrible mental strength at service games.....he is much worse than I expected him to be in this year. We can say he will be lucky with a win here and there. Even a 40 year old Federer would beat him. Oh well, tennis sucks, always the same 3 guys.

david_williams
01-24-2012, 03:46 PM
Well, for me Delpo didn't suck on this tournament, I mean this surface is never his best. He needs it to be slower or faster, not this. And I think since his comeback last year, Franco may have advised him to stay back before he gets his big ground strokes back and that's how he played most of the matches, in a defensive style. I saw 4 matches of him in this Open and I think his ground strokes are coming back, he's been more aggressive than last year and fear less to take advantage of short balls. And this match against Federer is the most aggressive match I've seen since his comeback last year. So he's regaining his shots, but mentally he's still not there, that's why he can't take chances of the break points and serve a df on set point.

But to me this is all becuz he hasn't played too many big matches last year, the 4 grand slams he played, he didn't play it that well, no big scenario. And this is his first QF in a Grand Slam since his comeback, this is huge, and he's nervous. But he is regaining his form, remember the 2009 QF? The same guy across the net, and he was in great form in 2009, and he only took 3 games outta Federer. This year, he's not in the same form (well Federer isn't neither), and he took 9 (well...), this says he is coming back step after step. So I'm looking forward to the rest of his years, after his ranking's rise, he shouldn't face some big players in the 1st few rounds so this gives him a chance to play himself deep into every single tournament.

Well but no matter what happened we still love him, that's the most important part.

Well but no matter what happened we still love him, that's the most important part.

lol oh c'mon man, he's a guy with great personality. You need to relax a bit:p

A comeback takes time, not everyone is Serena Williams:angel:
Thanks for your input since all I have watched were highlights. And as I stated after Davis Cup it seemed mental strength was lacking. Here is hoping that his QF appearance gives him confidence to move on and up.

I hope this thread won't become a livescore thread.
Anyway, good win, even though he is nowhere to his real form.

I also think this should not be a livescore thread ( sorry Mae- know you mean well) as one can easily view the livescore elsewhere so the info isn't unavailable. However if anyone thinks otherwise please speak your mind!

Here! Couldn't follow the match, so (not knowing the result) I went to the official livescore thread to read it back and all I found was 50 pages on Dolgo-Tomic.

hi, y'all ... I didnt realize there was an official livescore thread, so i'll check it out

but before I do that, i'm wondering: if we're not supposed to mention the scores, what does the "Cheering Thread" part of the title refer to?

I don't think the fact that Dubai is slow is such a big problem. It's more that he'll be playing 3 weeks in a row and it will require quite a bit of travel as well so he might want to reconsider if he does well in both Rotterdam and Marseille. On the other hand, it will be a good "yardstick" of where his game is relative to what it was like at the AO because all the big guns (except Nadal) will be playing in Dubai. Plus, I bet the appearance money is quite good as well ;-)

02-10-2012, 08:37 PM

Vamos Juan.

This is a good draw. I'm expecting at least SF from Juan. Would be great to see him play Berdych in the SF. That will tell us where his game really is right now. It would be really good to see Juan win his first ATP500. Interesting that he already has a GS title but all his other titles are ATP250's!!!

Haha I just posted this in the other "cheering" thread we have. I think Pony should give it a shot here, especially if he wins the title in Rotterdam tomorrow he can have a nice little winning streak. That always feels nice. Plus Pony owes Tsonga a little revenge for the Vienna indoor finals at the end of the last season, and it's hard to see anyone from the bottom half troubling him in the final if he does indeed get past Jo in the SF.

It's not necessary to go to Dubai the week after if he wins this indoor title or gets to the final here though. He should rest and get ready for IW/Miami at that point, where he's defending a ton of points.

LawrenceOfTennis

Marseille draw is not bad though he has to face a lot of tricky opponents. Tsonga can beat him indoors, not to mention he will be at home with a crowd support.

You could be right, Sue. I just think it's weird that he would potentially want to play 4 days in a row with no break in between, especially considering his draw: Denko, Gasquet, Tsonga, and Fish/Tipsy. That's not an easy string of opponents to defeat back-to-back-to-back.

misst89
02-22-2012, 06:58 AM

Juan Ma Del Pony
02-22-2012, 09:01 PM

misst89

02-22-2012, 09:11 PM
That's why I say that he needs to cut out the buddy-buddy, practicing with Roger, showing deference to him b/c he's the GOAT, nonsense. Like what Lendl did with Murray this year, stopping the "futbol" matches with Nole during the AO fortnight...Davin's gotta come up with some mental defenses like that for our boy, or the H2H will only explode further in The Arrogant One's favor.

Unfortunately the match thread is closed on GM so that's why I comment on the match in here:

Who knows what would have happened if JM would have broken already in the 1st game? But Roger was really excellent in the first set whilst JM was able to raise his level during the match. I was always afraid he would break Roger in the 2nd set and we would get an open match then ;)

It was a great week for JM and the crowd really loved him. It was the first time I got to see him play live and I hope to be able to see him again one day :)

There's a lot of respect between Roger and JM.

Good luck to your man for this season :)

Carlita, it was so nice to see you again  Hope you enjoyed the final despite the outcome ;)

All I have to say is just this: +1

It was fantastic to witness how much loved Juan Martin was in Rotterdam, and how much he appreciated the crowd's appreciation for him.
Hope he'll come back next year. :yeah:

Delpo is playing at 6:30PM local time tomorrow, which is 6 hours ahead of East Coast time and 9 hours ahead of West Coast time.

Good to know. I have my *supposedly* last training session tomorrow morning, so I hope I am DONE by the time his match starts. Since I am doing these by myself, we'll see how long it takes me, I'm hoping an hour per patient and there are 4 patients scheduled, IF they show up on time. I want this training to be OVER! I want my life back!

And we have a winner Ladies and Gentlemen! 6-4 6-4 over Mika Llodra in the Marseille final. Next up Dubai where he is seeded 8th and plays the Dog in the first round.

I doubt he will skip dubai. Has a okay draw until facing Tsonga and fed. If he does play, I expect a fairly good run but won't be too upset since I know he's worked hard these last two weeks.

Quite pleased with this week. Not only did he have to play well, he also had to deal with playing French players in front of a French crowd. Not an easy task.

Im just happy that at least he won a title this year. I am so worried about the defending points for IW and Estoril:unsure:

Juan Ma Del Pony
02-26-2012, 04:25 PM
To be honest Dee, he can tank early in IW (3rd/4rd) if he wants to/still feels tired (I don't care since I'm not going this year ) but then he should be able to gain those points back in Miami if he has a favorable draw. He has some points to work with in Miami since he's only defending a 4th round there and I think a few of the top players will be tired if they go far in IW, so it all depends on the relative difficulty of the draws in IW/Miami as to where he can do the best IMO.

Well i guess i shouldnt have to worry either, i mean he deserves some rest and im sure if he can manage his schedule better in the next weeks and months, he will get his top 5 spot back, like he should:angel:

heres delpos side of the draw

[8] Juan Martin Del Potro (ARG)- Alexandr Dolgopolov (UKR)
Andrey Golubev(KAZ) - [WC] Marko Djokovic (SRB)
Adrian Mannarino (FRA) – Lukas Rosol (CZE)
Marcos Bagdathis (CYP) - [4] Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (FRA)

[6] Mardy Fish (USA) – Andreas Beck (GER)
Mikhail Youzhny (RUS) – Richard Gasquet (FRA)
Nicolas Mahut (FRA) – Feliciano Lopez (ESP)
Michael Llodra (FRA) - [2] Roger Federer (SUI)

very tricky draw i should say:sobbing: :sobbing:

hes facing Jo in the quarters, and Fed in the semis if he gets there:o:o

Well, he can also tank after a couple rounds of Dubai, get some nice money and some points, and go to IW early to prepare.

I hate that he's in Fed's side of the draw. We'll just have to see how he does. I'm interested to see how he fares against Tsonga in their rematch. I too would rather he go out early in dubai, and then prepare for IW/Miami which could also be tough.

Guys, I just read on HinchadaDelpo that he couldn't find a flight to Dubai until Tuesday, the same day that he's supposed to play Dolgopolov:

Nos informan que vía Radio La Red, Delpo dijo que a Dubai llega el mismo martes para jugar, pues hoy no hay vuelo y viaja recién mañana!
Pobre! :(

Delpo will arrive to Dubai on Tuesday, the same day the he 'would' play, because today there are no flights!

Really hope he pulls out now, it's just getting crazy! Taking a long flight on the same day as he has to play the #14 ranked player in the world, after 9 matches in the past two weeks!! Delpo use your brains dammit! :help:

My Little Pony is scheduled to play tomorrow night after Roger Federer's night match, so I think that's around 9PM Dubai time. This would roughly translate to 9AM West Coast time, 12PM East Coast time, 5PM Theresa's time, and 6PM Lori's time :D

wait what happened?

Juan did not get a flight out from Marseilles to Dubai until late Monday night/early Tuesday morning, so he basically arrived in Dubai at 2AM local time on Tuesday and now he has to play on Tuesday night at 9PM local time :(

But I figured out why he's doing this, with the help of some other posters on another message board -- if he withdraws now, after the entry deadline has passed, he gets a mandatory 0 on his rankings that stays there for 1 year. Even if he tanks to Dolgopolov tomorrow and gets 0 points, he can "replace" those 0 points with a better showing at another 500 event later in the season like Barcelona, Hamburg, Valencia, etc...

So vamos, Juan! Please put on a believable "tanking" performance tomorrow

Delpo broken at 5-4 in the second set for the first time in the match while SERVING for the match, and now Dolgo has the lead for the first time at 6-5 in the second. If this thing goes to a third, DelPo should just tank and go to CA early IMO...

Juan Ma Del Pony
02-28-2012, 05:22 PM
Delpo wins it 6-3, 7-6(5) but at what cost? He looks EXHAUSTED and he has to play at 4:30PM local time tomorrow again. Crazy schedule, maybe he should just pull out of the Golubev match...can't see him getting past Tsonga in the QF with this exhaustion anyway.

Lori  I explained earlier in the thread, Juan had to at least show his face in Dubai or else he would end up with a "mandatory 0" on his rankings for the next 12 months. To be honest, if he had lost that second set tiebreak he probably would have tanked the 3rd set, but considering how pathetic Dolgoerror's level was for most of the match, Juan went for it and added 45 points to his ranking.

Don't worry about Juan too much, he always looks like his dog died. He'll pull out of the tourney later if he has to.

misst89

Hey guys, DelPo is playing the winner of Tsonga/Rosol (most likely Tsonga, who looks REALLY good so far) tomorrow night at approx. 9PM local time, so that's 9AM West Coast time, 12PM East Coast time, 5PM British time, and 6PM CET. So basically same time as his first match against Dolgoerror ;)

Vamos DelPo!
