His father will travel with him to Australia, but I don't think he will be his new coach :)

Patrick Mouratoglou answered the question about new coach as below on his facebook (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Le-blog-de-Patrick-Mouratoglou/109429335754536):"As you all know, Grigor Dimitrov is currently coachless. He doesn't want to rush and takes his time. He has a whole Team at the Academy working with him daily. At the moment, he is starting his pre-season preparation. I will help him for that period and his father too. When he'll be ready to find a new coach, we'll consider the options and take the decisions together."

Thus the coachless status may continue for a while until the suitable time but he has the whole academy team support:)

Best match to commentate on

It was a match at Wimbledon which really stuck with me, between Grigor Dimitrov and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. It was a fantastic encounter, and one of immense quality and excitement.

The two players embraced each other for several seconds at the end of the match, and it was most definitely the highest quality clash in the tournament. The crowd rose to their feet with a standing ovation, and that was quite fitting.

Dimitrov has so much potential and, while he may fail to truly live up to what is expected of him, on this occasion he was truly brilliant.

The shots he produced against Tsonga in that match were thrilling to watch and Tsonga was taken aback by how inspired his opponent's play was. It was a quite staggering performance.

I can recall the most incredible rallies: brutal hitting, remarkable saves, thunderous serves; it had absolutely everything. Many people were just left to laugh at how good it was because they could not quite believe it.

Even though Grigor lost this match 6-3 in the third, I think he can take a lot of positives from this; he served well, he moved pretty well, and his return of serve has improved a lot. His backhand is coming along quite nicely, although it's still a little short sometimes, but overall he's making great strides. I was quite impressed, and compared to a year ago at this time he's much improved. Looking forward to the next few matches.

Great result. Dimitrov beat Nielsen 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 and Bulgaria won the mixed doubles 3-6, 6-4, 10-1.

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/tennis/story/2012-01-04/hopman-cup-wednesday/52373968/1
Nielsen, who pushed eighth-ranked Mardy Fish of the U.S. to three sets on Monday, put up stiff resistance in the first set before Dimitrov dominated in the second.

"It was definitely a tough match today. The guy was attacking at every opportunity," Dimitrov said. "I got a bit lucky on some shots. He played some great tennis."

I watched Grigor's single's match during my lunch break and he was fantastic. Unfortunately I missed the mixed doubles but it sounded quite eventful. I hope there a video of this on Youtube. It sounds like Fish was definitely in the wrong as he went over to Grigor's chair at the change-over. I just hope Grigor doesn't get into trouble as well.

Hopman referee steps in to part angry Fish and Dimitrov

Fish, who also lost in straight sets to Czech Tomas Berdych on Wednesday, directed angry words at Dimitrov while the pair were shaking hands after the singles at Burswood Dome.

During the doubles, Fish appeared to hit a ball straight at the Bulgarian and then approached him as he sat in a chair during a change of ends.

Dimitrov jumped to his feet and the two men argued fiercely before the match referee rushed on to the court and stood between them. It was nearly a minute before order was restored.

Fish really spoiled the Grisho's win over him with this kind of attitude. I though Grigor was very kind with him during the match seeing how much frustrated Mardy was and when he got a luck net cord he approched to the net and appologiesd...really Grigor said in an intwerview with Bulgarian National TV that Mardy said some words during the match and the handshake which were not nice and also commented that apparatnly beeing a top 10 player you can afford those kind of behavior without any sort of warnings. Grigor is hot tempered, we now that and that's probably why at the end he reacted to Mardy's provocation, however I really think it wasn't his fault for this unpleasant situation. I hope Grisho will keep the positive memory over that match and not so much on that incident.

Totally agree - I was really surprised to read that he would play the qualifying in Sydney; no reason to play so many matches before the Aussie Open. I think he has looked great in the matches so far (didn't see the Fish Match). His game is starting to come together, and he'll be trouble for many of the top 20 on tour. Let's hope he can get a pretty good draw and we'll see what happens.

It's a shame that this type of behavior occured. It's seems as though the United stated players have a bit of a history of being sore losers.E.g: Andy roddick,Serena williams,Robert kendrick and now Mardy fish, ohh yeh and who can forget John mcenroe.

Um, I am prety sure Grigor didn't play Kendrick last year at AO qualies. He played Mateo Viola R1, then Reda in R2 and Thomas Schoorel in R3. You are probably mistaking this match with some else .

I don't understand why Mardy was so pissed at the fans too. They were only cheerful for Grigor, the didn't make any noise during Mardy's serves, didn't appload his UE or boo him . Fans didn't get a single warning from the umpire to keep silence the whole tournament...

I think Fish has a chip on his shoulder since he had lost to Berdych, I think. He had a hard time with Nielsen as well, so I think he was looking for something to vent his anger to. Certainly a shame how he behaved! The Bulgarian fans looked to have a great time from what I could see.

if he was in the main draw directly it would have been a different story, he'd have more time to rest but he should have realised the turnover would have been short and even worse if mardy was actually able to make a match of things

From what I understood from Grigor's mother yesterday, they didn't realise that he'd have to play 2 qualification matches in one day and it was very hot on Saturday. We got burnt and tired just by watching. His parents were ready to fall asleep by the court - they and Grigor hadn't slept at all, they arrived in Sydney around 7 a.m. and had to get ready to go straight to Homebush.

So, as crazy as it sounds, Grisho was supposed to play 4 matches in less than 24 hours with no sleep at all and almost 5 hours on the plane. ATP really needs to rethink the qualification schedule for the men at the Apia International... They would have managed to be on time even if the guys had played one qualification match on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Anyway, all that said, Grigor was a hero to even manage to play the first match, let alone win it. He was going great in the first set and the beginning of the second, we thought he'd "do a Mardy Fish on him" :), but he hit a wall in the middle of the second and could barely move. He did his best, drank Gatorade and Coca Cola and managed to revive himself sufficiently to win the match. He came up for the second match in a few hours, but one could see he wasn't moving or focusing well, he simply had to retire.

Physically he is well, trained in Sydney yesterday and is in Melbourne today.

I am sure that all fans at Melbourne will be supporting him big time. Please, do that for us too, as we can't come to the Australian Open this year. And Ivo, please, say hi to Tsveti from us and sorry we can't be there for her. We'll support her online. Do us proud, like the fans in Perth did. :wavey: :wavey:

I think Fish has a chip on his shoulder since he had lost to Berdych, I think. He had a hard time with Nielsen as well, so I think he was looking for something to vent his anger to. Certainly a shame how he behaved! The Bulgarian fans looked to have a great time from what I could see.

You are absolutely right. I could not believe my eyes when I saw the replay of the face off incident in the doubles match in Perth and saw Fish mouthing "asshole" to Grigor! It was so obvious, I am 100% sure that the official heard it clearly. At his age, Mardy should know how to behave, even if he is beaten badly. He wouldn't dare do that to Berdych, Federer, Nadal or Djokovic... The problem is, he is not likely to be fined for that, even though he kept pestering Grigor again and again. But he shouldn't just get away with it!

In the spirit of merriment, I would like to offer a recipe for a possible tennis cookbook. :-)

Grigor Dimitrov's recipe for battered Fish

Preparation:
Batter the Fish vigorously for 58 minutes, then leave to stew in its own sauce for 40 minutes.

Serving instructions:
Serve hot on TV (preferably at an average of 200 km/hour).

Note: Code violations do not interrupt the stewing process, so apply generously. Bon appetit!

He should be able to take Chardy - then it gets pretty tough with probably Almagro (although I don't think highly of his all-court game), then possibly Baghdatis or Wawrinka...after that it could be Berdych in the fourth round. We know he's got the game (which looks to be much improved) - question is: can he sustain a high level of play for three out of five sets.

It's a good draw although Chardy can be dangerous given he beat Grigor at the FO. Grigor is a far better player now and he should know Chardy's game well considering they train together so he I would expect him to win this one.

I suggest not to expect too much this time, shall we? Round by round. R1 not an easy task. I've just watched the match with Chardy at RG and he hit the ball really well back them to come on top. Ironically Grigor also retired the match before that as it repeats here too. Of course he ain't suffering that awful pollen allergy now but this kind of consequences are bothering me somewhat...

Even if he beats Chardy (which isn't easy) he'll meet a top 10 player with almagro. So we can't expext more than round 2. Everything else is just great. Of course I also hope for more but I wouldn't be disappointed even if he looses 1st round as long as it isn't 16 26 16 or something like that...

These are 2 completely different matches. I wouldn't decide the outcome based on the match with Fish - completely different players, different styles, outdoor/indoor, 2/3 and 3/5 sets, one is unofficial match the other is a R1 grand slam. Fish was not playing that well too. Besides Chardy won in straights sets the last time they played. Just some reasons to think about.
IMO this first match will be very hard, especially the first set, assuming Chardy will got that self confidence on his side. If Grigor plays well and wins it it will be a lot easier from then on.
Match with Fish only reveals that Grigor is in a great shape and very concentrated. A good sign to begin with...

but jeremy has been in good form to end the season last year and comes in to this season winning a challenger title so i dont think we can take to much from the match last year because they are both playing much better

I agree and in the RG match, Chardy got a lot of free points on his serve. Success for Grigor will depend on how well he reads Chardy's serve. If he's returning well and plays like he did in Perth, he stands a very good chance of winning the match.

Based on what I've seen, Grigor seems to be a different player than last year. I think having that whole year on tour, he's taken his lumps and knows how to go after his opponent now. Watching footage from the Australian Open last year vs Wawrinka and his most recent match against Fish, he's taken tremendous strides and is no doubt ready for this challenge. He'll probably have a letdown during this match, but I expect him to win in 4 sets.

Hypnotize

The biggest improvement is that he's stepping into the court and playing more aggressively. Last year he was letting his opponents dictate the rallies but against Fish, he was always looking for ways to attack. He's clearly worked on his fitness in the off-season, he looks stronger and his balance has improved. I can't wait to see how he plays this match against Chardy.

Looks like he picked up a right knee/thigh injury (maybe cramping?) late in the 4th set, a real shame as he was on course for his first slam 3rd round and second top 10 win up to that point.

I still think he has made a really positive mark on the tournament though, lots of interest and a step up in the level of his play. I think alot of people will be keeping a close eye on him now :P

Maybe this will be the year we've all been waiting for...

:sad:Haven't been here for a while. Grisho played really well until the 5th set. He is improving week by week, good luck in San Jose.

somehow i knew it would happen. Everyone on the forum underestimated almagro even though he's gone far here before. It is a shame though that what decided the match in the end was fitnes..you really woudlnt think a guy like grigor would be done in by fitness though

Nobody underestimated Almagro but we were all hopeful that Grigor could pull out a win. I know you love to come on here and be negative but he played fantastic tennis for 4 sets and it's just a shame his body gave way in the end. These things happen and he just has to learn from them and do better next time. I was realy impressed with the strides he has made since last year and he go away knowing he played his heart out. :worship:

^^ Sometimes if we support for someone too much, we all lose the reality but Grigor - as we saw in the match - had real chance.

But I still think lot of poster in this forum underrate Almagro indeed.

With his level, I believe he can win a smaller title this year. No idea which one though. Expecting very good indoors results in the coming weeks. Well, at least not many points to defend this year overall.

Right... everyone except you with your divine foresight?

Almagro is a great player, but his ranking is deceptive. His high ranking is built on a great streak of form on the south american clay swing, and a handfull of european clay court tournaments in the first half of last year. His 2011 grand slam record included 2 first round losses and his form and results in the second half of 2011 was not that of a top 10 player, with losses to Seppi [46], Monaco [41], Youznhy [37], Nishikori [54], Benneteau [81] etc etc.

Put simply, Almagro is a high ranked player in bad form, and Grigor is a low ranked player in good form, which we know from the Hopman Cup matches.

And from someone who watched the match from start to finish, i can confirm that the nature of the match was (until Grigor's 5th set injury) very competative, proving that there was no clear favourite, regardless of who you were cheering for.

Maybe some people did under estimate Almagro, but to sweepingly say that everyone who did was wrong and then present your own opinion as fact comes across pretty badly, hence the responces you got.

Sorry for the essay and all...

Besides the disappointment, it was a very entertaining match until his injury. Lots of fun points and brilliance from both player. What I like most is the interaction between the two boys (after Fish incident), they chatted (about bad line calls) and giggled a couple of times... Not everybody gets along well with Nico, so I'm happy our boy does.

Unfortunately I only got to see the match from the tie-breaker in the third set. At that point Grigor seemed to be controlling the match. Midway through the fourth set, Grigor got tight, missed too many first serves, and started spraying returns. It was clear that he did not have the mental and physical stamina to hang with Almagro. Add to that his thigh injury and it was all over. Too bad really, considering he was playing pretty well up to that point. Hopefully he'll be able to gather some steam and do some damage on the US circuit this Spring. If anything, his quickness and stamina need to improve - this will help him late in tight matches.

Did anyone notice that Grigor is not on the Entry list of Delray Beach but his figure is on the promo poster of Cherbourg 2012! Does it mean he try to defend his title of Cherbourg Challenger? Strange arrangement, after all the tournament after Delray Beach is Indian Wells.

oh I doubt to be honest, probably he is on the promo cause he won it last year...
wasn't this challenger the same week as Davis cup? Grigor had promised to play for Bulgaria this tie, besides he has to do it to be eligible for the olympics.
