Federer's Greatest Match

I'm sure what the best match he ever played in has been debated throughout this board, but I'm curious as to which match he played his best, regardless of the form of the other player. Murray's beat down of Nadal where he said it was the best he's ever played made me wonder what match Federer would have felt that way about.

I love watching him when his game is on, so I'm curious what match or matches really stand out in your mind.

That USO final where he cruelly beat Agassi, denying him his Sampras Swansong moment in the sun in front of the American crowd- one of the few times the crowd was solidly for his opponent during a final.

It's hard to say. Simply because whenever he is in a tough match that he wins, he plays poorly mostly but comes up with clutch play, but when it's an easy match he plays in god mode. I only like watching Federer aesthetically so...

The 2009 French Open final was Federer who served his best on clay .He really played great in that match and with what was on the line ,I have to agree with Topspin Doctor ,that was his best performance and the way he pulled out the win was great with all that pressure

But if you ignore that then its the match with roddick at the Ao semi

Another vote for AO 2007 semi against Roddick. USO 04 final against Hewitt must be mentioned as well.

Me, the registered User, :p, says Do you mean federers greatest match in winning or losing?

If it doesnt matter then it has to be Federer v Safin in 2005 AO SF. That was the peak Federer at peak most form and he was beaten by the Safinator.

It STILL annoys me today that he went ahead and got broken towards the end of the third set to slightly mar what would have been an almost flawless victory. FFS Fed.

I like 2004 US Open Final the best due to epic bagel feast.

The 2007 A.O. semi is overrated. Federer played brilliantly, no question, but Roddick did everything he could to play into his hands, with the most laughable display of suicidal net-rushing ever seen on a tennis court, against a Fed who still had excellent passing shots. I actually think Fed played better in the final against Gonzo, who was in incredible form at the time. If you watch the highlights, some of the rallies are unbelievable.

The 4th round against Djokovic was also great.

But his "greatest" match could well be the 2007 Wimbledon final. One of the relatively few occasions when he stood up to Nadal, weathered the storm, stayed clutch, & edged him out. Much higher level of play from both than in the horrifically over-hyped sequel the following year.

By definition, the greatest match Federer has been involved in is almost definitely the 08 Wimbledon final.

I suppose it's always difficult to differentiate between great and best, and the semantics for the word great alone can be varied. Problem is my memory gets hazy, to be honest. I need to re-watch a lot of these classic matches, really.

RG semi-final '11 deserves a mention in my view, a nice combination of mostly incredible gutsy play from Fed and tenacity when it looked like it was going the other way. I was expecting him to lose that one in straight sets :p

USO 2004 final was vintage.

AO 2005 SF vs. Safin was probably the best pure quality of ball striking match of the decade.

2005 Wimbledon F was too easy vs. Roddick

2005 USO final vs. Agassi he also played really well.

2005 TMC final, maybe the quality went in and out, but made up with the drama.

2006 Rome final, turning point in the Fedal rivalry, also maybe the best clay match of the decade.

AO 07 Final vs. Gonzo was insane quality.

Wimbledon 07 was Fedal's best quality grass match.

Wimbledon 08 was era-defining.

AO 09 final was awesome.

USO 09 final vs. Del Po was great.

AO 2010 final vs. Murray, his final slam?

2011 RG SF vs. Djokovic was simply incredible.

I have a few favourites - French Open 2009 - vs Haas in the 4th round, then against Del Potro in the Semis. They weren't champagne tennis moments but they did have abit of everything which made them great to watch.

Australia 2009 vs Del Potro - total beatdown love and love in the last 2 sets - half volley pick ups galore. Again against Tsonga in 2010 in the Semis another beatdown where he made Tsonga look like a club player.

Fed was far from his best against Safin, and let's not talk about him blowing the match with a tweener :o Against Nalbandian, he had an injury (a real one in the days before Nadull and Fakervic) and obviously had hampered movement in the last 3 sets. those were great matches to watch, but a truth that has been forgotten watching OldFed is he needed to be below his best to make a match competitive because JesusFed at his best was unplayable :worship: So if you want beatdowns there are quite a few, but the thread probably should be "best match with Federer involved" because at his best, like against Hewitt at the 04 USO or against Blake at the TMC 2006, it's going to be a short match with a lot of bagels going around :wavey:

You brought up a list of some nice matches. But for his greatest match, I think we should consider an additional factor. Not only should Federer be playing his best tennis, but his opponent should as well. I think this is what distinguishes a great match from a great beat down. If we talked about his most dominating matches then we can bring up the Hewitt, Gonzalez, Murray, and so forth.

So in terms of high quality tennis from both Federer and his opponent, I'm going to have to go with Wimbledon 2008.

All 5 sets were close. Nothing lobsided. No ridiculous UE ratios. High quality tennis. Final set could have gone either way.

US Open 2004 stands out, he hit winners from anywhere he felt like that day and would have done the same to any player - past or present - on that form

others that stick out are 2003 wim semi final v Roddick, 2009 AO qf v del potro, RG semi v Djoko, 2007 AO semi v Roddick, Ferrer 2007 Masters Final, Nadal 2007 Masters semi final, Ancic 2006 Wimbledon qf, Agassi 2005 AO & Dubai, Coria 2004 Hamburg Final, Agassi and Nalbandian 2003 Masters Cup.

Thank you!!!! I still laugh when I hear the 2008 Wimbledon final called the best match ever in Tennis. The most dramatic maybe, one of the most intense perhaps, but one of the best matches ever, not even close. Nadal was playing poorly and Roger was simply atrocious especially during the first two sets.

In my opinion, Federer was at his best during the A0 2004, US OPEN 2004, Masters Cup 2006, especially the semis and 4th Round of AO 2007. If I had to choose overall the Masters Cup 2006 was Federer at his best, his backhand has not looked better ever.
