Players with the best and worst serves for their height?

I'll kick off;

Worst = Murray (although admittedly he is kinda on the small side for a tennis player at 6ft 3in)

Best = Ferrer (his serve is absolutely pathetic, but given he is a FREAKISH 5ft 9in I give him props for managing to clear the net)

horrible choice,
Just on top of my head, Hanescu, Tomic, Sweeting definitely have worse serve than Murray and they are taller or just as tall. I am sure there are much more on tour.

Benjamin Becker, Berankis both have a much better serve than Ferrer..but it's arguable if he continue to serve as good as in Shanghai

Murray is small? Huh. I'd say that 6'1 - 6'3" is about average for a tennis player. There are definitely worse serves than his of players in that height range - if we're talking second serve, Troicki's is much worse.

Of the tall players, worst serve is Cilic. I just don't get why you'd serve like that when you're as tall as he is.

Best serve for a shorter player is Almagro. I am amazed at how much that serve can do, especially on his favored clay.

Worst: Chela

Weakest:

Over 2m: Anderson and Del Potro (not bad but both significantly worse than Isner and Karlo)

6'2-6'3: Chela

Quite surprised Seppi hasn't been mentioned yet. If he actually had a good serve for his height he would be a far better player.

For pro sports yeah, but other than Rochus there aren't any freakishly small players that are playing the sport, for any standards. That was my point.

Sweeting easily has the worst of any tall guy. His first serve is at second serve pace a lot of the time (and actually quite a bit slower than Roddick's or Isner's 2nds!)

Becker has really good pace for his height, but low first serve % so the overall package isn't quite so good.

Murray??

His 2nd serve isn't especially great, but it's getting better. His 1st serve, however, is probably the best of the top 4 :wavey: His fastest serve of all time is 145mph, which makes him the 10th fastest server of all time :wavey: Also, he gets a lot of aces and when he gets his 1st serve in, it usually results in him winning the point 90% of the time. Worst serve?

Worst: Sweeting (he's so big, yet he's such a pathetic server)
Best: Dolgopolov (for his size, his serve is great)

I hate to say it but Gael could have a much better serve than he already has.

10-18-2011, 05:24 PM
Worst serve for have Hanescu with Cilic. I am not sure i think both are 1.98m - with such height there should be firing aces and hitting 210km/h or 130mp and more regurarly 1st serve if it is flat. But this sounds like dream for those guys. From small guys Dolgo, Almagro - guys with quick servie motion- if they have high % FS in match their serve is very very effective and they got many free points, but low FS% is generally problem for shorter players- especially Dolgo is ,,expert,, mostly in 40s% FS in....

TBkeeper
10-18-2011, 05:30 PM
For their height DAVYDENKO is the best by a mile he is 1.78sm or 5'10 and his serve in 2009 was record for him 139 mphs so... it isn't bad at all ... and he constantly was hitting it with 130 mphs !

Henry Chinaski
10-18-2011, 05:34 PM
Of the players not mentioned...Flo Mayer is tall guy with a poor serve for his height. Cilic is nowhere near the same class as those mentioned in the thread but his isn't as good as it should be and Berdych's lack of a kick serve is a disgrace for such a giant.

Tipsy probably has the best for the guys 5'10 and under. Like philo said, Becker gets more pace but his % is consistently dreadful

Haelfix
10-18-2011, 05:35 PM
Lleyton Hewitt and its not even close. The guy is listed at 5'11, but he's more like 5'10. His serve is and always has been one of the ATP tours best in terms of efficiency. Great disguise, spin and placement!

Dolgo's is pretty good. Davydenko and Ferrer are kinda pasable for the height.

Not this year:D but for sure at his best late 09/early 2010 his serve was pretty good for his height, he was playing like machine and firing 125-130mph 1st serves all the time, Djokovic for example has mostly 1st serve 122-125mph only.

worst serve ESPECIALLY 2nd serves was "DF"DASCO, i remember in the 4th round of the 2010 Austrailan open that he played an epic 5-setter against Davy, watching this match made me think to my self this reminds me of pt.2 of 2009 us open 4th round oudin vs. sharapova, but more HORRIFIC EDIT SCENES:o

The first page is so surreal, with nobody realising.. I'm sure Rodre has troll'd enough to notice it by now.

Sweeting has always struck me as one of the worst American servers out there, especially for his height.
Tipsarevic has been serving well of late, gets the most out of what he has (ALERT: just on serve).

Well, maybe people have just have accepted Rodre's troll threads and are ignoring them. Almost nothing the big 4 does is the worst out of all current players.

I will say, recently at least, Nadal's first serve has been terrible, one of the worst in the top 10.

Fed, an average sized player, has won countless tournaments on his first and second serve aces, down break point or in a tie break. His serve was the reason he could win so many matches when he wasn't at his best, a bit sleepy or flatfooted or distracted.

Nadal deserves a mention, his lefty serve is mediocre at best.

Best: a lot of players come to mind...Hewitt, Tipsarević, etc.
Dolgopolov not really, his standard 43% first serve is just not good enough.

I'll kick off;

Hanescu and Starace shouldn't be on that list because they always get such a high % of first serves in, both of them are always in the top 10, Starace is in the top 5 of all time 1st serve %. So yes his first serve is very poor, but his career first serve % is 73% and he has won 65% of 1st serve pts for his career. Not a great server by any means, but I wouldn't rank him at the worst for his height considering he is relatively consistent.

Kohlschreiber, Tipsarevic are very solid for their height. Roddick, although 6'2 needs to be included as well.

As for worst, by far Volandri even though he is only 6'0. Every year he seems to only win roughly 58-62% of his service games and has 5x more DF than aces.

Federer's overall serve is the best (2nd serve too), Andy's 1st serve is the best.

you're off your meds again if you think Murray has a better first serve than Federer.

Nadal's serve has been horrendous for all of his career, except for some stretches in 2008/2009 and 2010. His lefty out-wide angle isn't nearly sharp enough compared to Lopez or even Verdasco.

Disagree, as good as Muller serve is, he is limited because of his lack of 5-10 MPH, that costs him on slower surfaces, see at the Open versus Nadal.
